John T. Humphrey Collection of Pennsylvania Birth Records

The Pennsylvania Births series compiles information extracted from church, Friends meeting, and pastoral records in which baptisms were recorded from 15 counties in eastern, southeastern, and south central Pennsylvania. The series focuses on baptisms that occurred in the 18th century. Each of the 16 volumes in the series is a list of infants baptized in or near the given county in that volume’s given time period, supplying the infant’s surname and given name, date of birth or baptism, and the names of the infant’s mother and father. Each entry also indicates the primary source in which a mention of the infant can be found. The series was compiled by John Thomas Humphrey, a professional genealogist who gained notoriety as an expert in German and Pennsylvanian ancestry. He was an active and admired speaker on the topic, and published many books and articles supporting Pennsylvania and German genealogical research beyond the Pennsylvania Births series. He led and participated in many societies and institutions, including as vice president of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania.

John T. Humphrey published the 16 volumes of his Pennsylvania Births series between 1991 and 2006. Upon his death in 2012, Mr. Humphrey left the rights to his collections to the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania.
