Washington County, Pennsylvania Intestate Records 1781-1789 IRENE P. LIGNIAN, C.G. and RAYMOND MARTIN BELL, F.A.G.S. I N THE PAPERS of the late E.B.Iams has been found a list of Letters of Administration granted in Washington County, Pennsylvania for 1781-1789. From 1789 to 1800 there is a gap. It is not known where the original records are to be found, so it is fortunate that this copy was made. The records are printed here with supplementary details from other court records. Some intestate estates are assembled from accounts filed and from Orphans Court records. The wills for Washington County, 1781-1805, were abstracted by Mary Ellison Wood in The Publications of The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, VI, (1916), 185-180. The total number of records of decedents in Washington County, 1781-1789 is as follows: in wills:87; in Letters of Administration: 163; in others: 43. Much of this information of record is available for the first time. There is no additional genealogical information in the files. Washington County was formed 28 March 1781, at that time it took in parts of Allegheny and Beaver Counties, and all of Greene County. Court officials were appointed in April 1781. The first will was probated 16 August 1781; the first letters of administration were issued 3 November 1781. Before that time Court Records for Washington County, Pennsylvania are found in both Pennsylvania and Virginia. From 1776 to 1781 Virginia had southwestern Pennsylvania organized into Monongalia County, (records at Morgantown, West Virginia); Ohio County, (records at Wheeling, West Virginia); and Yohogania County, (records at Washington, Pennsylvania) . Pennsylvania had the region from 1773 to 1781 organized as Westmoreland County, (records at Greensburg, Pennsylvania) . The Yohogania County records are found in the Washington County Deed Books, B-I; C-I; E-1. Abbreviations used in the following records: acc. —accounts; adm. — administration; ch.—children; cr.—creditor; inv.—inventory; m. — married; n.k. —nearest kinsman; O.C. —Orphans Court; w.— widow; w.m. — widow married; Yo. Martin, Jr. has called to our attention the fact that his recent article "Ulrich Liebengut" PGM, XXIX, 253-255 had not been submitted to him for final approval and clearance. Due to recent changes in editorship and publication committee, the present editor was not aware of this oversight. Dr. Martin also called to our attention that "the purpose of the article was to identify what is believed to be the correct European origin of the immigrant." He considers "publication of any more data on the descend. ants of Ulrich Liebengut to be premature until the research of all of the Liebengut families in colonial Pennsylvania has been completed." We extend our apologies to the author for the addition of further material and notes to his article and for the oversight in clearance. It is our policy to clear all manuscripts submitted for publication with the authors before publication. In Information Wanted, PGM, XXIX, 310, last line on page, the date of the marriage of Thomas Hood and Charlotte (Harris) Wood was given as 1864, it should read 1846. Their fifth son was born one month after the death of Thomas in 1862; all five sons and their mother are interred at Snell cemetery in Emmet, Arkansas. Our thanks to Fay Hood Shuman for the correction and our apologies to her for the transposition of figures.
