GENEALOGICAL ITEMS FROM THE WORKINGMEN’S ADVOCATE, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, 1 833- 1 838 contributed by Rita Schire Mowrer T lie Workingmen's Advocate, a weekly newspaper, was published 1833-1838 by John G. Youngman.1 A handwritten abstract of mar¬ riages and deaths from these issues is in the Heber Gossler Gearhart col¬ lection.2 In the 1970s those abstracts were typed and indexed by GSR volunteer Rita Schive Mowrer.-' The items below are from Mowrer. IS May 1833: Died in Sunbury, on Saturday last, the 1 1th of May, 1833, Mrs. Cath¬ arine Josephine Gillmer, consort of James Gilmer, Merchant, and youngest daughter of Cornelius Comegys, of the city of Philadelphia. Married about two short years, she leaves an infant son, aged about two weeks. On Thurs¬ day her remains were interred in the Sunbury Cemetery. A brief discourse was delivered by the Rev. Mr. Tallantyre. Died in Augusta Township, a few days ago, of cholera, Lucinda, infant daugh¬ ter of Mr. If R. Campbell, aged about lb months. Died in Milton on the 23d |October] after a short illness, Mr. William Flem¬ ing, at an advanced age. 9 November 183.3: Died— Fatal Accident. A little girl, daughter of John Snyder, in Augusta Township, about 8 years old, was a few days since burned to death. Samuel J. Packer. We regret the passing of our esteemed and distinguished citizen which occurred at 10 o’clock Monday evening last 1 20 October], at his residence in this borough. Added to Mr. Packer’s very delicate state of health since last winter, a fall which he accidentally had a few days ago hastened him to his grave. In various offices at different times Mr. Packer rendered our country many important services. He was our Postmaster, Prothonotary, States Attorney, and represented the counties of Northumberland and Union in the Senate. He was defeated in late election, being candidate for Congress. He leaves a wife and four children to mourn his loss. Aged 36 years. His remains were deposited in cemetery of this bor¬ ough on Wednesday. 15 November 1834: Died. Lawrence Campbell at his residence in the borough of Northumberland on Monday afternoon last [ 10 November], in his 68th year of his age. He was a native of Ireland, from which he emigrated to this land of liberty in 1784, in his 18th year, and resided in Northumberland 42 years. 9 May 1835: On the 27th ult. [April], on the Isle of Que, Union County, Mrs. Sarah Hartman, consort of Mr. John Hartman, and daughter of Mr. Peter Richter, aged 2 I years. On the 1st inst. |May], Mr. Christian Kremer of Penns Township, Union County, aged 56 years. 16 May 18.35: On Monday evening last | I 1 May], in this borough, John Hegins, son of the late Charles Hegins, aged about .30 years. 23 May 18.35: On Saturday the 17th inst. |May] in Upper Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County, of a lingering illness, in the 60th year of his age, Mr. John Dunkelberger, leaving his wife and 9 children to deplore their loss. On the 19th his remains were consigned to the grave. His funeral was attended by a numerous concourse of relations and acquaintances, when appropriate discourse was delivered by the Rev. The deceased was one of the brave band, who under General Jackson gave the British under Packingham that ever memo¬ rable drubbing. She loved and died as a Christian, in the full faith of a blessed immortality. In Northumberland, on Sunday morning the 7th inst. (June], in the 98th year of his age, Mr. John Shriner, an old and respectable citizen of the place. 1 1 July 18.35: On Saturday morning last, in this borough, Mr. Daniel Weaver, son of Jonas Weaver, of this borough, aged about .30 years. 8 August 18.35: Recently in Northumberland, Mrs. Mary Taggart, relict of the late David Taggart, aged about 70 years. 15 August 18.35: At this place on Friday 7th inst. |August], in the 34th year of his age, Mr. Samuel McCullough, formerly of Lebanon, Pennsylvania. On Sunday last, an infant child of Mr. Jacob Huber, of Augusta. 29 August 1835: In this borough on Sunday morning last, Abraham McKinney, aged 74 years. Mr. McKinney in his younger days filled several important offices with honor for himself and benefit to the public. As County Commis¬ sioner and Member of the Assembly representing Northumberland County in Simon Snyder's time, Mr. McKinney by his zeal and talents, placed himself upon an eminence from which his fellow citizens delight to view him. His remains were, on Tuesday last, interred in the Holland burial ground. 3 October 1835: Died in Augusta Township, on the 24th September, Mr. George Zimmerman, of that township, aged 52 years. On the 26th of September in Shamokin Township, Hannah, consort of Mr. Jacob Reed, Jr., of that township, aged 35 years. Mr. Haas held his station during 7 years to the entire satisfaction of the Commissioners. Mr. Bogar was one of the first settlers here and was a respectable citizen. On Monday last, Mr. Jacob Holzman, of Shaniokin Township, in the advance age of 85 years. Mr. Holzman was one of the Revolutionary soldiers. 30 January 18.36: An infant child of Philip Keller, Shaniokin, aged three years. Yesterday, Magdalen Walborn, in Chapman Township, Union County. 12 March 18.36: In Northumberland on the 2.3d of February, Mr. David Hollopeter, aged 21 years, of a lingering consumption which he bore with a Christian fortitude. 19 March 18.36: Mrs. Elizabeth Kricgbaum, consort of Mr. Solomon Kriegbaum, of Augusta Township, aged 61 years. 7 May 18.36: In this borough, on the 28th till. |April ] , Molly Jones, aged about 22 yrs. On Monday morning [2 May I, Mr. F.z.ekiel Follmer, son of the late George Follmer, and a stepson of Mr. I lenry Yoxthcimer, Jr., aged about 25 years. In Northumberland on Wednesday morning, Mrs. Charlotte Albright, con¬ sort of Mr. Jacob Albright, aged about 56 years. 21 May 18.36: In this borough, at the Pennsylvania Hall on Tuesday last 1 17 May], Bradford of York, Pennsylvania, and formerly a citizen of SunJudge F. hury, in the 62d year of his age. He retired to his bed apparently in good health on Friday night at the Pennsylvania Hall, not coming down on the fol¬ lowing morning, and after waiting for him beyond the usual time, and no answer being returned to repeated calls, alarm was ex|c]itcd, his door was forced open and lamentable to relate he was found in a fit of apoplexy. Med¬ ical aid was called in as soon as practicable, his family was sent for promptly. [December], in this borough, Mrs. Miller, consort of Philip Miller, deceased. 21 January 1837: At Northumberland, on the 12th of January inst., John Cowden, aged about 76 years, long a respectable inhabitant of that place. At Mr. Weit/el's, on Tuesday last 1 17 January], Aaron Giberson, aged about 61 years. 31 January 18.37: Departed this life, at his residence in Chilisquaque Township, Northumberland County, on the 7th of January inst., John Painter (father of the Editor of this paper), in the 85th years of his age. The deceased was one of the earliest settlers in the forks of the Susquehanna, having come to the country immediately after the purchase from the Indians and settled at Northumberland: the town plot of which he assisted to lay out, when it was in woods. In the Revolutionary struggle for Independence, he took an early and active part and was honored by the commissions of Lieutenant and Cap¬ tain in the service of his country among other dangerous enterprises and sa[n]guinary conflicts in which he was engaged. He was one of that forlorn hope of the Country that crossed the Delaware with General Washington in December 1776 and contributed to the signal success which crowned that noble and daring enterprise of the Commander in Chief of the American Army. On his return to Northumberland County, in the spring of 1777, he again entered the service in the defence of Northumberland County against the Indians. He was employed to build redoubts, and was engaged in scout¬ ing at Catawissa, Northumberland town, at Freeland Fort, llosley Fort, Muncy Fort and up the West Branch as far as the Big Island, under the command of Col.
