A LTHOUGH the publication of William Wade Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy has been of inestimable value to genealogists, it should be used with caution, especially when searching for early records. The deciphering of seventeenth century handwriting is not everyone's cup of tea; it is too easy to mistake letters and figures and so unintentionally misread a date or a name. Examples of such errors were found in the printed birth records listed in Hinshaw, when compared with the original entries in the Burlington Monthly Meeting Book of Births, Deaths, Marriages, 1677-1777. These records, now deposited in Friends Archives at 302 Arch Street, Philadelphia, belong to the Burlington Monthly Meeting of Friends in New Jersey. A microfilm copy of them is at the Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College. With the permission of Burlington Monthly Meeting, thermof ax copies of the early birth records were made at Swarthmore, and used for the present verbatim and literatim transcription of the records which extend from 1677 to 1700.' A comparison of the entries with the printed Hinshaw record disclosed thirty-four errors or omissions, evidence of the need to consult original records or Permission for the present transcription was granted by Mr. Charlet A. Doehlart, Qerk of Burlington Monthly Meeting, through the klnd efforts of Mrs. R. Newton Btu, who first noted the importance of the record, and of Miss Dorothy G. In addition, the entries are of special interest for they include the names, in most cases, of the officiating midwives and the women who witnessed the births, all of which were omitted in Hinshaw. Enrron's NOTE: The foregoing record provides evidence that a hitherto apparently unrecorded ship, the Henry el Ann, was at Gravesend in July 1681, bound for the Delaware Valley. On board were Benjamin Scott and his wife Margaret, who gave birth to a daughter on the ship on 7 f m [July], Dr. Robert Dimsdale, a First Purchaser of 5000 acres in Pennsylvania, and his wife Mary, and the widow Bridget Bingham who later became the wife of William Watson of Nottingham, Burlington County. The ship arrived before 25 9m [November] 1681, since Benjamin Scott by that time had been elected one of the commissioners for settling and regulating lands in West Jersey. It also provides the names of additional passengers on board the Samuel of London, John Adey, master, which arrived at Philadelphia in September 1682. These include Thomas Butcher and his wife Ester, who gave birth on the ship to a son Samuel 18 5m [July] 1682, Mary Whitt (Wheate) probably the wife of Benjamin 'Wheate who settled in Burlington, Sarah Basnett, perhaps the first wife of Richard Basnett, Mary Spencer, and Margaret Thomson.
