MARRIAGES RECORDED AT ST. GEORGE’S METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, PHILADELPHIA, 1789-1817 transcribed by Aaron Hoodwin T lie General Commission on Archives and History for the United Methodist Church credits St. George’s in Philadelphia as American Methodism’s oldest edifice in continuous use. Located on the same spot (now 23S North Fourth Street) since 176.3, the structure was originally erected as a Dutch Reformed Church. After Captain Thomas Webb formed Philadelphia’s first Methodist society in 1767, the society pur¬ chased the building at auction in 1769. It was there in December of that year that St. George’s pastor, Joseph Pilmore, made the first public state¬ ment in America of Methodist principles and beliefs. In 1771 Francis Asbury preached his first American sermon at St. George’s, and in 1784 Thomas Coke took to St. George’s pulpit to introduce John Wesley's idea of a new American denomination.1 EXTANT VERSIONS OF EARLY ST. GEORGE’S MARRIAGES Three separate versions exist of the marriages in St. George's first regis¬ ter: the original register,2 an 1881 abstract/ and an 1893 abstract.1 By using all three versions in combination, the most accurate, most complete list of early marriages recorded at St. George’s can be compiled. Ihe original first register contains marriages and baptisms through early 1817, plus information such as officers, members, classes, and a few family groups. For example, the first marriages in the second register at St. George’s, begun in 1817, are dated 1814, 1815, and 1816, with a note: The above I have transcribed |damaged] a loose piece of paper. Some of the names may not be cor| reel; bottom of page damaged l.** The 1881 abstract is a bound volume of penciled entries on columnar, preprinted pages that includes marriages through 1881. The columns are labeled DATE or MARRIAGE, NAME OF MALE, NAME OF FEMALE, and NAME OF MINISTER. Hntrics are alphabetized by the first letter of the grooms’ sur¬ name, then are entered predominantly chronologically. This structured arrangement omits occasional— but important— details contained in the original register, including a few witnesses, places of residence, and des¬ ignations as “coloured.” The use of pencil makes erasures and smudges a particular issue in a few instances. This version contains a fair number of transcription errors, but it appears to have recorded the data from the original register prior to some of the damage that occurred by 1893. Criti¬ cal additional data, then, can be extracted from this abstract to fill in the problem areas (indicated in the transcript below by curly brackets). The 1881 dating is an approximation based on the title of the volume, though some of the actual abstract may have slightly preceded that date. On the 1881 abstract Rev. Francis II. l ees (St. George’s pastor 1931-1947) com¬ mented: Owing to constant repetition of names in revising records of membership, errors in transcribing names, illegibility of handwriting, failure of certain pastors to keep accurate records, etc., the following transcript will, doubt¬ less, be found to some extent inaccurate and incomplete. The 1893 abstract is a bound photocopy of handwritten entries on columnar, preprinted pages that includes marriages through 1855. The columns are labeled DATE OF MARRIAGE, MARRIAGES (with sub-columns for husband and wife), and BY WHOM MARRIED. AS with the 1881 abstract, the format omits additional details contained in the original. The entries are faithful to the order in the original register. A fair amount of transcription errors notwithstanding, it is clear that the original register at that time was in very much the same condition as it is now, with omissions in the abstract occurring in the same spots as current damage to the pages. The 1893 dating is an approximation based on the publication date. The abstract may have been done up to a few years earlier, but certainly after the 1881 abstract, as shown by the damage omissions. Only the first letter of her surname and the very bottom of the remain¬ ing letters remain. Her given name is known to be Flora, but her surname has not pre¬ viously been suggested.
