Palatines and Servants Imported on the King of Prussia N THE COURSE of sorting and arranging miscellaneous documents I in the Archives of the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting of Friends at Third and Arch Streets, Philadelphia, Mr. Willman Spawn, a committee member of the Department of Records of the Meeting, came across a document which had no obvious connection with the Religious Society of Friends. On examination, it proved to be a business record of the firm of James and Drinker, prominent Philadelphia merchants during the colonial period. Since both Abel James and Henry Drinker were members of the Meeting, conceivably the document was inadvertently included among other Drinker manuscripts relating to the Meeting which eventually came to rest in the Archives of the Society. The record is endorsed "Palatines & Servants per the King of Prussia, Robinson." On further examination it proves to be the firm's record of the sale in 1764, of immigrants imported in the Ship King of Prussia, Captain James Robinson, from London. When compared with the list of "Foreigners" on this ship, who subscribed to the oaths of abjuration and fidelity to the King, on 3 October 1764, at the State House, as published in Pennsylvania German Pioneers (Norristown, 1934), I, 694 695, List 246 - C, several hitherto unknown facts appear. Whereas the published list has 52 names of Palatines on it, the Drinker list includes in addition the names of 23 English servants who were imported on this ship, but whose names do not appear on the published list. It also includes the names of seven single women not included on the published list, indicates that ten wives accompanied their husbands, and that five families included children. Conversely, nine names of Palatines on the Drinker list do not appear on the published list, and the names of twelve Palatines on the published list do not appear on the Drinker list. The Drinker list shows who purchased the servitude of each immigrant, usually indicated where the purchaser lived and sometimes his occupation, the term of servitude of each immigrant, and the price paid. For single men the average price was about i14 18s., which included the immigrant's passage of £8 8s. and "head money" or tax of four shil54 Palatines and Servants 55 lings. Single women were only a little less expensive, usually costing £14 16s. 6d. Couples without children cost £29 15s. 2d. The usual length of servitude was two or two and a half years; most of the money was paid in sterling, but French guineas or other coin were sometimes accepted in payment. Often only part of the price was paid in cash, a short term note being given for the balance. When it was paid it was so noted in the margin of the page. To ease identification, names which are inserted in brackets in the following list are spelled as in the printed list. Otherwise, except for the tabulated form of the original, the following record has been transcribed as nearly verbatim as possible.
