Marriage Bonds of Bucks County, 1772-1785 Edited by TERRY A. MCNEALY rTHIS series of 118 marriage bonds is preserved in a bound volume of 1 miscellaneous manuscripts in the Library of The Bucks County Histori cal Society in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Dating from 1772 to 1785, they document some (but by no means all) of the marriages which took place in Bucks County prior to and during the American Revolution. The sequence and numbering of these abstracts follow those of the original papers. The date given is that when the bond was made, and is not necessarily the same as that of the marriage itself. The names in parentheses at the end of each entry are those of the persons who witnessed the bond. A few of the marriages witnessed by Isaac Hicks were abstracted in "Marriages Copied from the Docket of Isaac Hicks," Publications of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, III, (1908), 201-202. However, there are variations in spelling, residences and other particulars, and several in this group are not in the earlier publication. Also, there is a gap in the 1908 publication from 1776 to 1794. Three of the bonds are entirely hand-written (numbers 93, 94 and 97). The rest are printed forms with blanks filled in with the names of the parties and dates. As a typical example, the full text of the second bond in the series is as follows: T KNOW all Men by these PRESENTS, That we Malakiah Richardson of Northampton Township in the County of Bucks and David Dungan of the same Place yeoman are firmly held and bound unto the Honorable RICHARD PENN, Esq; Lieutenant Governor and Commander in Chief of the Province of Pennsylvania, and Counties of New-Castle, Kent, and Sussex on Delaware, in the Sum of One Hundred Pounds, good and lawful Money of America, to be paid to the said RICHARD PENN, Esq; his certain Attorney, Executors, Administrators, or Assigns; To the which Payment well and truly to be made, We bind ourselves jointly and severally, for and in the whole, our Heirs, Executors and Administrators, firmly by these Presents. Sealed with our Seals. Dated the 10th Day of December in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy two THE CONDITION of this OBLIGATION is such: That if there shall not hereafter appear any lawful Let or Impediment, by Reason of any Pre-Contract, Consanguinity* Affinity* or any other just 134 Marriage Bonds of Bucks County, 1772-1 785 135 Cause whatsoever; but that the above-mentioned Malakiah Richardson and Sarah Dungan of the said Township of Northampton & County afsd may lawfully marry; and that there is not any Suit depending before any Judge Ecclesiastical or Civil, for or concerning any such Pre-Contract; and also if the said Parties, and each of them, are of the full Age of Twenty-one Years; and are not under the Tuition of his or her Parents, or have the full Consent of his or her Parents or Guardians respectively to the said Marriage+ and if they, or either of them, are not indented Servants; and do and shall save harmless and keep indemnified the abovemaned RICHARD PENN, Esq; his Heirs, Executors, and Administrators, for and concerning the Premises; and shall likewise save harmless and keep indemnified the Clergyman, Minister, or Person, who shall join the said Parties in Matrimony, for, or by Reason of his so doing, then this Obligation to be void, and of none Effect; or else to stand and remain in full Force and Virtue. Sealed and Delivered malakiah Richardson in the Presence of David Dungan Is Hicks Numbers 1 through 10 have the name of Richard Penn printed in the text as Lieutenant Governor. Numbers 11 through 52 and number 60 bear the printed name of John Penn, who succeeded his brother Richard in 1773. There are at least two separate printings of the John Penn form represented in this series. Beginning with number 53 the parties are bound to "His Excellency [blank] Esquire, President of the Supreme Executive Council of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Captain General and Commander in Chief in and over the same." This version of the form, coming under the new revolutionary government of Pennsylvania, also omits the words "Ecclesiastical or Civil" after "Judge" in the second part of the bond. There are other minor changes in punctuation and capitalization among the various printings of the form. At least three separate printings exist of the Revolutionary form of the bond. In no case is the printer of the form indicated. In instances where two spellings of a name are given, the name is spelled differently in the two blanks in the text of the bond, or the spelling of the signature differs from that given in the text.
