ADAM HILL OF WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA Russell S. Lynch, AG * dam Hill wrote his will I July 1817 in Mercer County, on the western border of Pennsylvania, naming a wife and seven children.1 An 1888 county history provides the following information about him: A Adam Hill, served in the Revolutionary' War seven years and six months under Gen. Wayne, and was wounded in the thigh at the battle of Stony Point. He came to Mercer County' in 1800, and settled in Sandy Lake Town¬ ship, near where the Stoneboro fair is now held.2 Prior to 1817 there are records for Adam Hill referencing Allegheny County, Crawford County, Cumberland County, Franklin County, Mercer County, and Westmoreland County; they name two different wives. Do these represent more than one man of the name, migration, new political subdivisions, absentee land ownership, or some combination thereof? An Adam Hill served as a private in the 5th Pennsylvania Regiment. He has 45 extracted service cards documenting his serviced He enlisted 16 March 1777 for the duration of the war and is present on musters and payrolls through August 1780 as a member first of Capt. James Taylor’s Company of Light Infantry, then of Capt. Thomas Boude’s Company; loca¬ tions listed include Bound Brook, Camp Millstone, Camp Smiths Clove, West Point, Katreat, and MorisTown. He was taken prisoner 28 June 1778 and exchanged 22 July. He signed his pay receipts 12 August 1778, 3 October 1778 (twice), and 7 May 1779 (twice) by mark. Adam Hill of the 5th Regiment acknowledged receiving payments and interest for three payments ($88 #70687, $79.62 #70461, $33.30 #70167) owed before 1 January 1781 [no indication if by signature or mark] and issued 11 November 1784. The Supreme Executive Council authorized payment and interest to members of the 5th Regiment, including Adam Hill, pri¬ vate, on 17 June 1783, 31 August 1784, and 16 April 1785.4 Russell S. Lynch (lynchrs@familysearch.org) is a Collection Manager for FamilySearch International in Salt Lake City. He is a descendant of Adam1 Hill through his daughter Martha2 (Hill) Kilgore. 1 Adam Hill will, Mercer County Wills 1:73-74 (FHL #878,967). Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 47 (20 1 1 ) 111 1 12 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 47 “Hill, Adam, resided in Mercer county, 1816,” is also listed among the privates in the 1st Pennsylvania Regiment of the Continental Line.5 He has three extracted service cards documenting his service: two acknowl¬ edging receipt of payments for monies owed before 1 January 1781 and issued 1 1 November 1784,6 and one for donation land. Donation land was based on the Pennsylvania state law of 24 February 1785. The Supreme Executive Council issued the certificates to veterans of the Pennsylvania line during the American Revolution, with privates receiving 200 acres, lieutenants 400 acres, captains 500 acres, and majors 600 acres, which were located primarily in present-day Crawford County, with some in Salem, Sandy Lake, Nesannock, and Coolspring townships of Mercer County.7 Private Adam Hill of the 1st Pennsylvania Regiment was eligible for 200 acres,8 and the Commonwealth issued certificate #1579 for 200 acres to him 28 November 1786,9 which was located “on the west side of the Allegany river in the county of Westmoreland.”10 Adam Hill and wife Isabell of Franklin County sold that land 4 October 1787 to James Lamberton of Cumberland County for £25. Adam signed the indenture, and Isabell made her mark when she was present and examined separately in Carlisle, Cumberland County.11 The lot is west of present-day Riceville, Crawford County, on the southern border of Bloomfield Township.12 Crawford County was created from Allegheny County in 1800, but no evidence was found that Adam ever resided there.1-5 5 “Noncommissioned Officers and Privates of First Pennsylvania Regiment, Conti¬ nental Line,” Pennsylvania Archives, Fifth Series, 2:722. 0 Compiled Service Records of Soldiers Who Served in the American Army during the Revolutionary War (NARA M881, roll 788). The lower/southern border was located north of Pittsburgh in Beaver County on the 40°50' parallel. The upper/northern border was located in Erie County on the 42° parallel (the state line with New York). 8 Records of the [Pennsylvania] Land Office, Donation Land Register, RG-17, series #17.174, “Listing of Veterans Entitled to Land,” Adam Hill on page 17 [stamped 145], online at phmc.state.pa.us. 9 Records of the [Pennsylvania] Land Office, Donation Land Register, RG-17, series #17.174, District 8, page 70; no patent indicated (image online at phme. state.pa.us). 10 Records of the [Pennsylvania] Land Office, Copied Surveys, 1681-1912, RG-17, series # 17. 1 14, book D-42: 194 (image online at phmc.state.pa.us). 11 Allegheny County, Deed Book, 5-E:273-74 (FHL #1,497,864). The deed describes the land as being in Westmoreland County, but the sale was recorded in Allegheny County in August 1796, after Allegheny’s creation primarily from Westmoreland in 1788. 12 Combination Atlas Map of Crawford County (Philadelphia: Everts, Ensign and Everts. 1876). 15 It was not uncommon for those receiving certificates or script for land either to sell or assign the land without ever visiting the location. James Lamberton bought many donation land certificates (see pages 270-76 in the deed books). 201 1 Adam Hill of Western Pennsylvania 113 Adam Hill is on the 1786 septennial census in Hamilton Township, Franklin County. Among the freemen [unmarried men] listed in the township that year is Fergus Hill,14 the name of a son in Adam’s 1817 will. Franklin County is at the center of the southern border of the state, cre¬ ated from Cumberland in 1784. Adam is not on the Cumberland County tax lists for 1778- 1782, 15 but Franklin County tax lists for 1785- 178916 show several men surnamed Hill in Hamilton Township: 1785: Alexander (£0.1 1.8), Adam (£0.1.0), Alexander (freeman, 15 s.), Fergus (freeman, 15 s.) 1786: Alexander (£0.15.1), Adam (£0.2.0), Alexander (freeman, 15 s.), Fergus (freeman, 15 s.) 1787: Alexr. (freeman, 10 s.) 1789: Alexander (£0.8.10), Adam (£0.1.3) In 1790 Adam Hill’s household was in the lower portion of Allegheny County that had earlier been in Washington County. His household included one adult male and two females.17 Adam Hill served in a local militia for Allegheny County in April 1791. He was in Captain Zebulon Pike’s Company and Major Thomas Patter¬ son's Battalion in the Second US Levies when they went to Trenton. New Jersey.18 He was taxed that year in Mifflin Township, Allegheny County.19 Bounty land warrant #9551 was issued 15 May \19[torn] to Adam Hill, but no details of his service or residence survive.20 Adam Hill purchased 100 acres in St. Clair Township, Allegheny County, on the waters of Peters Creek 16 June 1798 from Robert McKee 14 Pennsylvania septennial census returns, 1779-1863, RG-7, series #7.26, roll 2 of 14 at the Pennsylvania State Archives; Franklin County was certified by a local justice of the peace 3 August 1786. There is no 1793 return for Franklin County. In 1800 only John Hill, labourer, is in Hamilton Township. 15 “State and Supply Transcripts for the County of Cumberland,” Pennsylvania Archives, Third Series, 20. 16 Franklin County tax and exoneration lists, 1785-1789 (FHL #1,027,051, item 3). 17 1790 US Census, Allegheny County, page 216 (NARA M637, roll 9). The total population line describes it as “that part of Alleghany County taken from Washington.” Allegheny County was created in 1788 primarily from Westmoreland County, but part came from the lowest portions of present-day Beaver and Allegheny counties, then in Washington County. 18 Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Soldiers Who Served from 1784 to 1811 (NARA M905, roll 16). The current township was officially created in 1805 from Coolspring Township, but there was an earlier Sandy Lake Township.28 In 1805 the Commonwealth designated Adam Hill's home in Sandy Lake Township as the polling place.29 In 1810 the household of Adam Hill in Sandy Lake Township, Mercer County, had seven people.30 21 Allegheny County Deeds 22 Allegheny County Deeds 8-H:229-30 (FHL #1,497,865). 8-H:479-80 (FHL #1,497,866): recorded 1 1 March 1799. 23 Allegheny County Deeds 9-1:354, 355 (FHL #1,497,866). 74 Mercer County was organized from Allegheny County 12 March 1800 and offi¬ cially created 17 November 1803 (Pennsylvania Statute, chapter 2130, 455-56. 460-61, and chapter 2391, section 1/17:480). 25 Mercer County Deeds El:382-83 (FHL #889,518). 26 1800 IIS Census, no townships given, Mercer County, page 444 (NARA M.32, roll 39): 3 males under 10 [Fergus, Adam, William], male over 45 [Adam], 4 females under 10 [Euphemia, Jane, Martha, EIizabeth|. female over 45 [Rosanna], 2~ “Lists of Taxables by Township,” Mercer County: Past ancl Present [note 2], 155, 156. 28 Note that the residences of Adam1, his children, and grandchildren, are affected by the following Mercer County township formations: Coolspring (original), Sandy Creek from Sandy Lake (1802), French Creek from Sandy Creek (1805), Sandy Lake from Coolspring (1805), Lake from Coolspring (1805), Millcreek from French Creek (1849). Co., 1909), 1:156. 30 Adam Hill household, 1810 US Census, Sandy Lake Township, Mercer County, page 939 (NARA M252, roll 52): 2 males 10-15 [Fergus and Adam], male 16-25 [William], male over 45 [Adam], female 10-15 [Elizabeth], female 16-26 [Martha], female over 45 [wife]. i 2011 Adam Hill of Western Pennsylvania 115 The 1 July 1817 will of Adam Hill of Sandy Lake Township, Mercer County, names his wife Rosanna and children Adam, Fergus, Uphemy McCormick, Jane McCormick, Martha Kilgore, William, and Elizabeth Hill; sons Adam and Fergus were each to receive half the real estate, divided when Adam turned 21; Adam signed the will; executors were his wife and Allen Dunn; witnesses were Jared Tuttle and Geo. A. Howard; the will was probated 8 December 18 17.-31 Rosanna Hill was head of household in Sandy Lake Township, Mercer County, in 1820.32 ANALYSIS Considering the records together, we find that the records connecting Adam Hill with Allegheny County, Crawford County, Cumberland County, Franklin County, Mercer County, and Westmoreland County all belong to the same man, but he was not the Adam Hill of the 5th Penn¬ sylvania Regiment. Adam Hill of the 1st Pennsylvania Regiment received Crawford County dona¬ tion land. Adam and Isabell Hill of Franklin County sold the same land. The 1816 entry, from a compiled list whose exact source is unclear, but from records in the Pennsylvania Archives, also states that Adam Hill of Mercer County is the one from the 1st Regiment. Fergus Hill (an uncommon name) is on the 1786 Septennial Census in Franklin County and is the name of one of Adam's son in Mercer County. Company A of the 1st Pennsylvania Regiment was raised in the early summer of 1775 in that part of Cumberland County that became Franklin County.3-3 Rosanna, wife of Adam, is named in an Allegheny County deed and his Mercer County will. • Adam Hill signed deeds in Franklin and Allegheny counties and his will in Mer¬ cer County. Adam Hill of the 5th Pennsylvania Regiment signed his pay receipts by mark. Therefore, this service record does not belong to Adam Hill of Mercer County. * ■ ■ ■ ■ GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY 1.
