Book Reviews Genealogies of Pennsylvania Families: From The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography. with an Introduction by Milton Rubincam, FASG. 949 p. index. 1981. (Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore) $35,00. + $1.00 postage. From its founding in 1877 until 1934, the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography published a great quantity of genealogical material, including family histories and Bible records. All but one of these has been reprinted in this volume. The exception is the article "The Descendants of j45ran Kyn, the Founder of Upland," by Gregory Keen, this was considered too long to be included. The work of eminent genealogists of the past will be found here, among them, Gilbert Cope, Thomas Allen Glenn, Edwin jaquett Sellers, Alfred Rudulph Justice, Arthur Adams and G. Andrews Moriarty. The standards set by PMHB were high, as they have continued to be in other fields of interest, so one may expect to find good documentation of the families represented. It would be impossible to list all the genealogies and Bible records printed here, there are about 142 of them. They cover many of the "found- 178 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine ing" families of Philadelphia and Philadelphia County, as well as families in other counties and New Jersey. For anyone interested in a broad range of Pennsylvania genealogy this is a most convenient and indispensable reference source. Milton Rubincam's introduction contains a great wealth of background material on many of the genealogists whose work has been reprinted here. The Collins Family. Volume I. The Collins Family in America, Descendants of the Third Son of the Rev. William Collins, Vicar of Swansea, Glamorganshire, Wales. 139 p. hardback binder. $18.50 + $1.75 postage. Both volumes, $35.00 + $3.50 postage. limited edition. Volume III. Ancestors of the Distaff Side of the First Five Generations of The Collins Family in America. 270 p. hardbound binder. $19.75 + $2.20. charts & index in all volumes. Vol. I. by Margaret Hill Collins. Vols. II & III by Margaret Hill Collins & Ellinor Collins Aird. Information as to purchase may be obtained from MargZret Hill Collins, Arnecliffe Stable, Gulph Road & Merion Avenue, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania 19010. It is hard to describe this monumental work, one of family devotion and great skill. Although not hard-bound, these volumes are well put-together and very well presented. The documentation is far superior to the usual family piece. There are good reproductions of documents, good maps, photographs of buildings and family. The charts are well done. In Volume III, in addition to the Collins family there are the "distaff" families of Hammond, Budd, Stacy, Morris, Lloyd, Hill, Evans, Conrad, Mauleverer and Abbott. Even if one is not a descendant of the Collins or the collateral families, this is a fascinating collection of history, places, a way of life and some lovely light-hearted reminiscence. Tucked into the back of Volume II. is a most innovative enclosure—A Directory of A Number of the Living Descendants of Isaac and Rachel Budd Collins.. Here are listed about 200 living descendants giving their address, spouse, children, education and occupation. A great idea! The Cary-Estes-Moore Genealogy, by Helen Estes Seltzer. (Published by Barn Hill, 825 Hallowell Drive, Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania 19006) 1981. 498 p. photographs, index, limited edition. $3.5.00. This genealogy deals with the descendants of Abraham Estes of Queen County, Virginia, who died there in 1720. The Cary Family in England and America, in this case the Virginia branch, and the Scottish Moore family of North and South Carolina. As a' family record it is very interesting, and valuable, however it suffers from the lack of solid documentation. it does contain interesting extracts from printed works relating to members of the family. An innovative feature is the index, which in addition to a "name" index has also a geographical index, a very useful device for the researcher. Book Reviews 179 Guide to the Microfilm Collection In the Pennsylvania State Archives. by Roland M. Baumann & Diane S. Wallace. (Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission) Harrisburg, 1980. paperback. 117 p. index. A really excellent bibliography of available microfilm covering a myriad of topics. There are official state papers; some church and county records; diaries and journals; some military papers; county papers; individual person records and business records, all focused on Pennsylvania. This new publication should be helpful to anyone considering a specific research project at the State Archives. Each microfilm is described in the fullest possible manner. Pennsylvania Historical Bibliography, III. Additions Through 1976. compiled by John B. B. Trussell, Jr. (Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission, Harrisburg, 1980) paperback 119 p. index. $4.00., May be ordered from the Commission, Box 1026, Harrisburg, 17120. Atlas of Westmoreland Coun!y, Pennsylvania: From actual Surveys and under the direction of SA D. G. Beers, Philadelphia, 1867. (copies may be obtained from Thomas J. Metzgar, R.D. 2, Box 159, Export, Pennsylvania 15632) 1981. oversize reproduction. $25.00. A very well done reproduction of the original atlas. The Farmers' Children, by Donald Mentzer Coppersmith. (Enterprise Publishing Assoc., Coudersport, Pennsylvania 16915) paperback. 125 p. A study of the Yentzer family of Roulette Township, Potter County, Pennsylvania, featuring remniscences, photographs, excerpts from diaries and newspaper articles. Also notes on the Teuscher family. Also genealogies of the George Toombs family and the George Weimer family. Jan Dyckman of Harlem and His Descendants. by H. Dorothea Romer & Helen B. Hartman. (New York, 1981) 195 p. available from Julia A. Thompson, 190 East 72nd Street, Apt. 30-D, New York, N. Y. 10021. $24.95. This is a really beautiful book. the cover is stunning, the make-up excellent. It is replete with reproductions of old engravings, maps and portraits. A lot of careful thought and energy has gone into this project. The book covers ten generations of the Dyckman family, very thoroughly (the reviewer was able to find a step-daughter of a Dyckman, who is an old friend, thus proving the coverage is very thorough). However, it is very sad that, though there is documentation in many cases, the obviously available sources have been largely ignored. 180 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine English Wills.: Probate Records in England and Wales, With a Brief Note on Scottish and Irish Wills. by Peter Walne, M.A. (Virginia State Library), 1981, 62 p. paperback. $5.00. A very useful research tool for genealogists looking for probate records in England and Wales prior to 1858. It provides a helpful explaination of complex English probate records before that date. Wills being a very important adjunct to any genealogical project. It should be noted that this is only an educational tool to this research, ,not an abstract of wills. Johnston Stapp and Allied Families. by Jennie F. Downing Crow. (World Services Publishing Co., 1927 South 26th St, Lincoln, Nebraska 68502.) 1980. 437 p. This book contains extensive genealogies of the Stapp, Powell, Coffey, Salmon, Moss, Gholson, Bridger, Pitt, Haviland, Lear, Odor, Duval, Dubois, Brooks, Phelps, Johnston, Hanson, Griffith, Wesson, McCarty, Billington, Hawkins, Pope, Beak, Ball., Gooch and Rosse families. Some documents relating to these families have been reproduced very well in this book, but other than that, there is not any documentation of a single generation of any of these families. Entitled! Free Papers in Appalachia Concerning Antebellum Freeborn Negroes and Emancipated Blacks of Montgomery County, Virginia. (National Genealogical Society, 1921 Sunderland Place, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036) compiled by Richard B. Dickerson. 1981. 83 p. index. A really remarkable record of free negroes and mulattoes in Montgomery County, Virginia in 1823-1863. From the records we are given name, age, if free-born, color, scars, court registers, children. Very valuable and helpful census records of 1830-1860 are included. The 1866 Marriage Register, with employer and location, is very helpful, as is the Persons of Color Census of 1867. There are wills and an index.
