MEN ABOVE 53 YEARS, 1778 BRECKNOCK TOWNSHIP, LANCASTER COUNTY transcribed by Patricia Law Hatcher, FASO, rasp ‘ o n 17 March 1777 a statute authorizing and organizing a draft for the Pennsylvania militia was passed.1 All males between 18 and 53 were to serve two months on active duty. If they refused, they would be fined. Some occupations were exempt, and instead of paying the fine individu¬ als could provide a substitute.As part of this process, Michael Stephan, collector of Brecknock Town¬ ship, when collecting the Continental tax in 1778 indicated those men above the age of 53 The names in brackets arc the spelling on the asso¬ ciated Duplicate Continental Tax list; that assessment is given in the right ' column.
