BA HOFFE OF PHILADELPHIA D EWJER EY FROM BI CHWEILER IN 1752 22 November 1752 on the Phoenb: 1 Johan Jorg Bachoffen (signature) Hans George Bakhoffen (on board) wife Susanna Dorothea (Langs) daughter Margaretha Bachoffen son Johann Peter Bachoffen daughter Dorothea Bachoffen daughter Maria Salome Bachoffen daughter Maria Magdalena Bachoffcn {?New York) Johan George Bockoven Johan Jacob Bockoven Some descendants modified the surname to Bachoff or Bockoven. It is likely that these men listed in Strassburger and Hinke were father and son. Johan Jorg signed the oath, but Hans George, listed immediately below him, was identified as being "on board," which often meant the individual was ill. If so, the illness was temporary, as both lived several decades more. Another son, Peter, was too young to sign the oath. During a few years, the father and a sponsor signed the baptismal entries in the Lutheran church book at Bischweiler. The signatures of Johan Jorg Bachhoffen at his daughters' baptisms in 1746, 1748, and 1750 are a perfect match for the signer in Philadelphia (see "Editor's Notes: Diligence and Serendipity," PGM 44:85-91), so we know that it was the son who remained on board. 2 No burial records were found in Bischweiler for the first three daughters listed above. Because the Bischweiler records are quite comprehensive, it is likely that they all emigrated. The two youngest were six and two at th time. If they survived, they are probably unidentified wives in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, George and Susanna Dorothea do not seem to have sponsored any children to point to the identity of these daughter ' pouscs. Maria Magdalena was quite likely born en route. See introductory matcri21 in PConncctions between BischweUer, Alsace and Amctia in the 1700s," PGM 44:12-21, for more information on methods and sources. 1 Strassburger and Hinke, Pennsylvania German Pioneers, 1:508 2:61 0; Ust l 95C. 1 2 Evangeltsch-Lutheran Church von Btschweller, Tau/en 1746-1768, #22, 85, 140. Another branch of this family also emigrated. George Bocko ided in ew Jer ey. H was the son of Johan Jorg's brother Joha born only four month after Johan Jorg' on of the same nam . W, the nephew George immigrated, based on a family Bible with a bir matching his birth in Bischweiler ( ee below). Jacob Bockoven Jer ey is almost urely another son of Peter, based on the Bi c record . George Bockoven and Peter Bockoven were early pew-h Ba king Ridge Pre byterian Church, probably in 1769,4 o a third also came (although it is not impossible that it was the father). This leaves the possibility that George son of Jorg had died and on-board passenger was the nephew, but the records in Penn seem to be for the son ( ee below) and there is no additional Phila records for George or Jacob, suggesting they arrived at New York bly even many years later. 5 It should be noted that there are n weiler records for Peter, his wife, or his surviving children Peter, Maria Catharina, and Maria Eli abetha after the latter's birth i suggesting that the family left Bischweil r, but whether for Am r I where in Europe isn't known. 3 t. This family shows a pattern found in several families in this study-the boys were baptized in the Reformed church, but the girls were baptized in the Lutheran church, because the father was Reformed and the mother was Lutheran. Susanna's burial information at St. Michael's and Zion Lutheran, Phila· delphia, says they had thirteen children. 35 Only eleven were found in BischweiJer, suggesting they had two more, born after they left there. Hi. ABRAIIAM 7. }ACOB 1 BACHOFFEN/BOCKOVEN (Peter, Jacob), son of Johann Pet r Bachoff en and Maria Elisabetha Gsell(in), baptized 24 August 1738 at Bischweiler German Reformed. 88 The Revolutionary War pension application of the widow of Jacob Bockoven of Wantage, Sussex County, ew Jersey, and Berlin Township, Delaware County, Iowa, states that he was born in 1735. However, given that Jacob son of Peter left no later record in Bischweiler, that George son of Peter also went to Morris County, N w Jer ey, used the Bockoven spelling, and married a sister of Jacob's wife, that he named a daughter Easter (Esther, a strongly Bischweiler name), and that there is no other Bischweiler Jacob available to be the immigrant, this i almost surely the same man. He probably sailed directly to New York City since there is no Philadelphia arrival for him. He married EUZABETH WHITENAC/WHITENECK/WHITENACK in Septemb r or October 1765 in Morri County, ew Jersey, who was born in 1746 in Morris County, daughter of Richard Wbitenac. 8 9 Children of Jacob 1 a-nd Elizabeth (Whitenack/Whtteneck) i.
