GENEALOGICAL RECORDS OF THE CALLENDER, IRVINE AND DUNCAN FAMILIES PROM The Irvine Story, BY NICHOLAS B. WAINWRIGHT ARRANGED BY HANNAH BENNER ROACH The Historical Society of Pennsylvania has four extensive collections of Irvine family papers, accessioned between 1887 and 1963: the General Irvine Papers, the G. A. Irvine Papers, the Newbold-Irvine Papers, and the Mrs. Caryl Roberts-Irvine Papers. These collections furnish the basic source material for Mr. Wainwright's account of the five generations of the family who owned land along the Brokenstraw Creek and the Allegheny River in Warren County, bordering the New York State line in northwest Pennsylvania. Purporting to be no more than a distillation of the thousands of surviving manuscripts in the collections, Mr. Wainwright's 100-page booklet nevertheless succeeds in presenting a quite comprehensive picture of the development and decline of the property in Warren County, and the family, so far as it was concerned in it. He includes much carefully documented genealogical infoiMation, derived in large part from the Irvine Papers. Lack of an index, however, leaves the reader somewhat uncertain as to the numerous family relationships obtaining between the Irvines and the Callender and Duncan families. To clarify these ramifications, the following skeletal arrangement is offered. As it is based solely on the records cited by Mr. Wainwright, it does not pretend to be a complete genealogical record. It is offered only as a guide to Mr. Wainwright's account, to which the page references, placed in parentheses in the arrangement, refer. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, That GEORGE CHARMS, shoemaker, in Amberson's Valley, 12 miles westward of Shippensburg, Cumberland county, and province of Pennsylvania, died the 14th day of last August, and willed a good estate to his daughter RUTH CHaams, whom he had not seen, neither had he any certain account of her since the year 1763, which is now almost ten years, the which time her mother, ELIZABETH CHARMS, stole her away from her father; the child being then but five or six years of age, is supposed to have forgot her father altogether, and especially if her mother, and a Dutchman, who went off along with her, lives together; the Dutchman's name was Twomas BROONER, it is possible he might have changed his name and have the girl's name clanged also; now the estate is in the care of the subscribers, living in the aforeend Amberson's Valley, 12 miles westward of Shippensburg.
