HA SWIRTH OF YORK Co NTY FROMBISCHWEILERI 1738 D 1749 9 Novemb r 1738 on the Charming Nancy 1 Abraham Haus Wirth, 24 (signature) 13 Sept mber 1749 on the Christian 2 Michael Houswird (mark) Abraham HauSwirth was in York County within three years after he arrived, but n thing further has been found on his younger brother Michael, who emigrated over a decade later. Their brother-in-law Samuel Pauser arrived two years after Michael (see "Pauser of Germantown from Bischweiler in 1751"). The HauSwirth family was from Saanen, canton Bern, Switzerland. The village of Saanen is near Gstaad, about two hundred direct miles from Bischweiler. There appears to have been much back-and-forth betwe n Bischweiler and canton Bern, in spite of the great distance. Hauswirth, which became Anglicized as Houseworth, is not as unusual a surname as we might think. In addition to the two emigrants from Bischweiler, there were several other persons of the surname in Bischweiler, who are not documented as being related to Abraham. 3 There were als9 other groups of Hauswirth immigrants to Pennsylvania, who may be connected to Bischweiler and/ or Saanen. • In 1733 the Elizabeth carried a family consisting of a 34-year-old weaver Jacob Houswet, his wife Maria (34), and their children Barbara (13 1/3), Cradell (10), Maria (8), Anna Maria (4½, dead), Caspar (2, dead), Jacob (1/4, dead), and Anna Lies (8½). 4 The ages of the children suggest that the cou pie -would have had additional children born in America. The name of their son, Caspar, suggests a possible connection with the Bischweiler/Saanen family (see below). Sec introduetory material in "Connections between Bischweilcr, Alsace, and America in the 1700s" for more information on methods and sources. 1 Stta.ssburger and Hinke, Pennsylvania Gennan Pioneers, 1:246, 247, 248; 2:25254; Lists 65A, 65B, 6SC. 2 trassburgcr and Hinke, Pennsyluania German Pioneers, 1:400; 2:442-43; List 130C. 3 ec ..Hau swirth," Bl.schwetler Stammtafeln, 1:328. There arc problems with the chart, which confuses Caspar the shoemaker and Caspar the milker. 4 Strassburgcr and Hin.kc, Pennsylvania German Pioneers, 1:765- 77; List 30A. 338 Pennsylvania GenealogicaJMagaztnseVol. 44 (2006) 2006 Hauflwirth 339 • Jacob Hauswird came in 1751 on the Janet. 5 He may have married Barbara Brand in Bucks County in 1761 and been related to Valentine Hauswirth/Housewerts, who had children there b ginning in 1759 and died in 1799. 6 Or be might have been the Jacob Hauswirth in Montgomery County having children in the 1760s.7 • Christian Hou :wert arrived in 1754 on the John and Eltzabeth. 8 He may have gone to Berks County and died prior to 1765. 9 • John Houseworth wa in orthumberland County in the late l 700s and early 1800s. 10 • The Houseworth Cemetery, Wood Farm, west of chuylerville- aratoga Road, Saratoga County, New York. has stones for Abraham Hou eworth, died 4 January 1860, age 92 years [born about 1767); wife Mary, died 28 February 1853, age 53 years; Abraham [no dates]; wife Elizabeth, died 4 August 1842, age 71 years [born about 1769, probably indicates she was the first wife of Abraham]; Reuben, died 24 February 1829, age 28years [born about 1801). 11 GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY Bischweiler records identify children of Caspar Hau:Bwirth who were born between 1639 and 168i-a forty-two year span. Were they the children of one, two, three, or four men? Published marriage records for Saanen do not clarify the situation. A careful analysis of the occupations and other descriptive terminology help to construct the potential solution presented below. 12 Exploration into the baptismal and burial records of aanen may provide a different picture, but unfortunately the Saanen church records are not available on microfilm at the Family History Library. 8 HAU&WIRTH 1. CAsPAR was possibly the Caspar Hauswirth, son of Caspar Hauswirth and Anna Annegger/ Annecker baptized 2 May 1608 at 5 Strassburger and Hinke, Pennsylvania German Pioneers, 1:474; List 175C. 6 John T. It mistakenly assigns to Kaspar a daughter Anna Barbara, born 6 June 1697 and married to Christian Stieg. She was a daughter ofHanS Moritz HauSwirth; see Evangelisc.h-Lutheran Church von Bischweiler, Heiraten 1684-1745, #181. 340 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 44 Saanen, Bern, witzerland. 13 He dkd by 2 May 1696 when he was called late" in the marriage of his son Kaspar. The marriage records of his on identify him as a citizen and Chorwejbel [?court ergeant] at Saanen in canton Bern, Switzerland. Caspar Hauswirtb married 12 January 1633 in Saanen, canton Bern, Switzer-land, MARIA GANDER. 14 Caspar Hauswirth married 7 March 1659 in Saanen BARBARAHALDI. 15 Children of Caspar8 Hauflwirth who left records in Bischweller: i. possibly PETER. He is described as a citizen of Saanen Bernergebiet [canton Bern] in the marriages of hi children in Bischweiler in 1723 and 1725. The son Christian is described as the territorial milker, the occupation of Caspar 8 , which may indicate a familial connection. 17 iii. CAsPAR IIAUSWIRm,born say 1671; his burial, between 1696 and 1706, was not found in Bischweiler. Caspar HauBwirth a Schu-Knecht [apprentice shoemaker], surviving son of the late Caspar HauSwirth formerly citizen and Chorwejbel [?court sergeant] at Saanen in canton Bern, Switzerland, married 2 May 1696 at Bischweiler German Reformed MARIAMAGDALENA WIANDI,daughter of the late Sebastian Wiandi citizen and Ku/fer [cooper] of Compadauli in Switzerland. 18 Magdalena Wiandi, surviving widow of Mr. Caspar Hauswirth former shoemaker and Eltister [sic, A/tester] (elder) of the Reformed church at Barbelroth was buried 17 March 1706 at Bischweiler German Reformed. 19 Child of Caspar Hauflwirth: 1. possibly Hans Jacob Hau.Swirth, born by 1706; Mr. Casper HauSwirth's little son HanS Jacob buried 16 April 1706 at Bischweiler German Reformed. 20 2 iv.
