There are several extra title pages for these sermons, but the paging is continuous. In the book was a scrap of paper with the following: “James Barrett requests Joseph Beading Esqr will give Mr. Gordon an Execution agt. Jacob Wicoff on the Judgement Obtained agt. him at Barretts Sute, 23 June, 1787.“ This would seem to indicate that the book was in the possession of the Governor’s son Joseph at that time.— H. E. D. Sarah Beading was borne on ye 26th day of August, Anno 1691, about 8 a Clock in y® afternoon, departed. My Dear Mother Departed this Life on ye 20th of Janr, Anno 1714, about ffour a Clock in ye afternoon, Aged 57 years. My Dear ffather Departed this Life on y* 30th of Octbr, Anno 1717, about two of y« Clock in ye afternoon, Aged 59 years.* ... . . . ■ . * The foregoing adds several most important items to the Memorials of the Reading, Howell, Yerkes, Watts, Latham and Elkins Families, by J. Gran¬ ville Leach, Philadelphia, 1808, and to Cooley's Genealogy of Early Settlers in Trenton and Ewing, Old Hunterdon County, New Jersey, Trenton, 1883. Until its discovery there was no date of marriage or death, of the first John Reading, or date of death of hits wife Elizabeth ; neither was there a Bat of their children. It was known, ae stated by Dr. Cooley and Mr. Leach, that two of these children survived their parent* : John, the future governor of the Colony, and ft daughter who married Daniel Howell. The record, as printed above, shows that, contrary to family tradition, it was Mary Reading, and not (72) Bible Records. 73 John & Mary Reading were married on the 30th Day of November, Anno Dom: 1720. Richard Reading was born on the Eighth day of Decemr, Anno Dom. 1732, about 7 of the Clock in the afternoon. Thomas Reading was born on the Seven & twentieth of Sepr, Anno Dom. 1734, about 4 of the Clock in the morning. Mary Reading ju* was born on the Twenty Sixth day of June, Anno Dom. 1736, about 4 of Clock in ye afternoon. Sarah Reading was born on the twenty ninth of August, Anno Dom. 1738, about 3 of the Clock in the morning. GILLESPIE— BRITTAIN— BRATTAN RECORD. Copied by MRS. JANE KER. Contributed by MRS. DOUGLAS EUGENE DISMUKES. The following were children of William and Eleanor Gillespie who lived for a number of years at Nottingham, Maryland. The mother and children were dismissed from the Presbyterian Church there March 28, 1766. They settled in Frank ford and Mifflin townships, Cumberland county, Pennsylvania, where they located large tracts of land. Eleanor Gillespie was 67 years of age in 1789. The father, William, is presumed to have died before the family left Nottingham.— G. E. S. 1898. Robert Gillespie was born July 21st, 1738. Margaret Gillespie was bora May 16th, 1740. Samuel Gillespie was born September 29th, 1742. Eleanor Gillespie was born January 26th, 1744. James Gillespie was born February 23rd, 1746. her sister Elizabeth or “ Elsie ”, who so married. The will of Daniel Howell, dated 9 September, 173®, Indicates the recent decease of his wife In bequests to his daughters Elizabeth and Mary. It constitutes his “ brothers-ln law, John Heading and William Rittenhouse,” executors of his estate; he having married the sister of the first, while the latter had married, as second wife, Catharine Howell, the sister of the testator. Bobert Gillespie died May 9th, 1806, aged 67 years, 9 months and 19 days. Elizabeth Gillespie died September 13th, 1804. Adam Brittain and Ann Gillespie were married February 17th, 1778. Eleanor Brittain, daughter of Adam and Ann, died September 20th, 1848, aged 67 years, 1 month, 16 days. Ann Brattan, cousin of Eleanor Brattan, died February 28th, 1853, at an advanced age. Mary Brattan, daughter of Adam and Ann, died July 23rd, 1857, aged 70 years, 2 months and 20 days. William Brattan died March 11-th, 1862, aged 70 years, 10 months, 17 days. Samuel Brattan died August 16th, 1864, aged 67 years, 9 months, 5 days. Eliza Jane Sharp, born March 21st, 1811. George Brattan and Eliza Jane Sharp were married June 7th, 1832. Children : James Sharp Brattan, born July 16th, 1833. Samuel Wilson Brattan, born December 15th, 1835. James Sharp Brattan died August 26, 1836, aged 3 years, 1 month, 10 days. Eliza Jane Brattan died November 11th, 1836, aged 25 years, 7 months, 21 days. George Brattan died September 13th, 1860, aged 75 years, 10 months, 23 days. Samuel Wilson Brattan died August 26th, 1899, aged 64 years, 8 months, 11 days. Samuel Wilson Brattan and Margaret Grizzell Blean were married Jan¬ uary 26th, 1859. Margaret Blean Ker, born April 15th, 1893. Thomas Orr Ker, born December 5th, 1895 ; died March, 1897. P. D. Allin and Mary Isabel Brattan were married March 25th, 1896, Their daughter: Mary Alma Allin, born April 21st, 1897. P. D. Allin died June 25, 1898. Mary Isabel Allin died January 10, 1899. STUART-STEENE. [This record, contributed by Mrs. Dismukes, was copied from a very small note book left among the effects of Jane Means Stuart Smead, wife of Alexander Dallas Bache Smead, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania.] Great grandfather Hugh Stuart, born Antrim County, near Locherne, Ireland, June 23, 1757 ; came to America 1784, and married Ruth Patter¬ son in 1790. She was born in 1703, and was mentioned in the will of William Patterson. They spent the remainder of their days farming the William Patterson farm at the head of Letort Spring, Carlisle, Pennsyl¬ vania. This farm was made up of the present Lindsay farm and a part of the Duncan Green farm. Their children, surname Stuart, were: John Stuart [Judge], who married Barbara Steene, January 14, 1816; Rev. Henry R. Wilson performed the ceremony. James Stuart, who married Elizabeth Steene 1823. Joseph Stuart, who married Jane Steene 1824. William Stuart. The three Steene sisters were daughters of John Steene of County An¬ trim, Ireland, who married Elizabeth Cairns, and settled first at Carlisle, on Pitt Street. The Stuarts and Steenes, except John Stuart who married Barbara Steene, and William Stuart who went south and never was heard of again, —moved to Bucyrus, Crawford County, Ohio, December, 1821, in Cones¬ toga wagons. They bought an additional horse at Bloody Run, twentyfour traveling in their party. In the graveyard at Bucyrus are the following Steene, Stuart inscrip¬ tions : John Steene died January 6, 1850, aged 80 years. Elizabeth Cairns Steene, wife of John Steene, died May 5, 1833, aged 67 years. Ruth, wife of Hugh Stuart, died September 17, 1823, aged 60. Hugh Stuart died July 29, 1854, aged 97 years, 1 month, 6 days. James Stuart, son of Hugh and Ruth Stuart, died August 6, 1871, aged 76 years, 3 months, 26 days. Elizabeth, wife of James Stuart, died November 14, 1874, aged 72 yrs. Jane, wife of Joseph Stuart, born March 3, 1805; died June 3, 1876. Joseph Stuart, born January 12, 1800. — 76 Bible Records. John Stuart * married Barbara Steene and settled at the town mill in Carlisle, in 1821. Their children were: Hugh Stuart * [Judge], bom November 10, 1816; died October, 1880. James Steene Stuart, remained in Carlisle. Amelia, born May 12, 1819; died 1891. John, bom December 16, 1821; died July, 1876. Elizabeth, born April 4, 1824; married Colonel William Wherry; died July 16, 1883. Joseph A., bora July 9, 1826; married Mary Ann McCune. James Thompson, born April 21, 1829 ; died October 12, 1877. Barbara Ann, born August 3, 1831; died May 13, 1833. Martha Ann, born August 3, 1831; married G. P. Searight; died April 8, 1898. William Patterson, bora July 30, 1836; died 1837. William Patterson, bom May 10, 1839; died June, 1873. John Stuart, Sr. died March 28, 1870, aged 70 years, 13 days. Barbara, wife of John Stuart, died August 28, 1873, aged 75 years, 13 days. MACKIE BIBLE. In possession of MRS. ROBERT E. HASTINGS of Philadelphia. Contributed by MRS. HARRY ROGERS. Peter Mackie, born in Dumfries, North Britain 25th November, 1769. Anna Maria Schaffer bora in Philadelphia, North America, 11th May, 1777. The daughter of David Schaffer, Junr. The above parties married at the house of Frederick A. Muhlenburg in Philadelphia the 30th Septr., 1794, by the Rev. C. M. Smith of the German Lutheran Church. Philadelphia 18th October, 1795, James David Mackie was born at half past eleven Oclock A.M. We lived then in Fromberger’s Court, he was named after James Mackie and David Schaffer, Junr,, his grandfathers, then both deceased. Philadelphia 9th March, 1797. Mn. Mackie was delivered of a fine boy who was taken sick on the 11«» of the same month and notwithstanding every exertion, died that day at 1/4 past four oclock. He was intended to have been named William, and was buried in the German ground in Race Street above sixth. Philadelphia 30th March, 1798. Ann Maria Mackie was born at half past five oclock A.M. She was named after her mother. We then lived in front street near Callowhill Street. Philadelphia 3d March, 1800. In the night at 10 minutes past twelve oclock Charles Mackie was bora. He was named after his uncle Charles Schaffer. We then lived at No. 84 North second between Arch and Race Streets. * John Stuart of Carlisle was Judge of the Cumberland County Courts, as was his son, Hugh Stuart, while John Thomas Stuart and Hugh Silas Stuart, sons of Joseph A. Stuart and grandsons of John Stuart, were ditstlnguished members of the Cumberland County bar Bible Records. 77 Philadelphia 17th March, 1802. At 20 minutes before 11 Oclock P.M. Elizabeth Mackie was born at No, 38 South sixth street, she was named after her grandmother and Aunt Mrs. Sheaff. Philadelphia 13th October, 1804. At 5 minutes after 4 Oclock P. M., Sarah Mackie was born at No. 38 South sixth Street, she was named after M”. Sarah Campbell, widow of the late Mr. Robert Campbell of this City, Bookseller. Philadelphia 30th March, 1805, at 5 minutes before 11 O'clock, Peter Mackie was born at 319 North Second Street. July 24th, 1805,— The above child died and was buried in the German ground in Race street about sixth Street. Philadelphia 24th May, 1806, at half past 5 Oclock A. M. William Mackie was born at 319 North Second street, he was named after his great-grand-f ather and uncle by Peter Mackie 's mother ’s side. Philadelphia 30th November, 1807, at half past 10 Oclock A.M., Wilson Mackie was born at 319 North Second street, he was named after his grandmother now deceased & father's mother, whose maiden name was Agnes Wilson. Sunday morning July 3<*, 1808, Wilson Mackie died very suddenly after 2 days illness with the Cholera-morbus, burled in the German & English ground belonging & adjoining to the new Church of St. Johns in Race Street, between 5th and 6th Streets. Tuesday, August 15th, 1809, Agnes Mackie was born at day break, was named after her Aunt Agnes Mackie. Philadelphia 17th March, 1812, Catharine Mackie was born at 319 North Second Street, named after her deceased Aunt, the late Catharine Schaffer. Philadelphia 6th February, 1813, Henry Mackie was born at 5 Oclock in the morning at 319 North second Street named after Mr. Nobody. Philadelphia, l«t June, 1814, James David Mackie our eldest Son died in the evening, of a long indisposition of a complicated nature. * He was buried in Saint Johns Church in the same grave with his Brother, Wilson. Philadelphia, February 6th, 1815. Andrew Jackson Mackie born at 319 North Second Street. Philadelphia, January 6tb, 1818. Caroline Mackie born; we then lived in Crown Street. Philadelphia, January 4th, 1821, Emma Mackie born at 69 New Street. She died on the 23m March, same year, and is buried in St. Johns Church in the same grave with her Brothers, Wilson and James. Philadelphia, November 11th, 1826, Matilda Mackie born at half past 3 oclock in the afternoon, at 69 new Street. Philadelphia, Sept*. 19th, 1837. Peter Mackie died after a short illness of six days, and was buried in St. Johns Church Yard. New Orleans, September 18th, 1837, Charles Mackie died after a short illness of Six days of the Yellow fever. New Orleans, January 27th, 1842. Philadelphia, October 27th, 1868, Anna Maria, wife of Peter Mackie, died of Cholera after an illness of a few hours, buried in St. Johns Church Yard. Jersey City, March 19th, 1873, Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Peter & Anna Maria Mackie was buried in Laurel Hill, Philadelphia. Philadelphia, September 4th, 1873, of Paralysis, buried at Monument Cemetery, Anna Maria, daughter of Peter & Anna Maria Mackie. Oakland, California, November 30th, 1876, suddenly Henry Mackie died of Apoplexy. Agnes Mackie. Matilda Mackie. CLAWSON FAMILY BIBLE Contributed by MRS. MARY CLAWSON BOOP of New York City. BIRTHS. Emory Clawson * was born on 21at of November, 1801. * Emory Clawson was the son of John Clawson, Jun., and wife Sarah Emory, of Queen Anne and Caroline Counties, and great grandson of John Jacob Clawson, of Cecil County, Maryland. John Jacob Clawson, aooordlng to family tradition', came to Maryland from Holland and settled In Cecil County, but returned to Holland about 1746i, where he died. The only child of John Jacob and Mary Clawson of whom record appears was: John Clawson, Senior, horn to Cecil County about 1740; died In Queen Anne County, 1786, leaving a will dated December 3d, 1770. He had several large tracts of land in Queen Anne County ; his homestead plantation, Cleves Fancy and Cleves Rambles, devised by will to his children, lay near Queens town on the Dover Road. No wife joined In any of the deeds he executed. nor is any named in his will. Children of John Clawson, Senior, were : John Clawson, Junior; Libby, who married Thomas Tharp of Queen Anne County; Anne [Nancy], who married James Pennington of Kent County, Maryland, and Joanna, unmarried In 1786. John Clawson, Junior, born 1766, In Queen Anne County, married 'Sarah Emory. He resided on the .plantation Cleves Fancy and Cleves Rambles, where he died in 1809. Sarah Emory, wife of John Clawson, Junior, was undoubtedly the daughter of Thomas Emory and his first wife, who is believed to have been a daughter of Thomas Lane of Kent Island. Thomas Emory was the son of “King” Arthur Emory of Ingleside, on Kent Island, Queen Anne County, who died in 1.74)7, and the grandson of Arthur Emory who settled in Queen Anne, then Talbot, County in 1665, and died there In 1699. Thomas Emory Inherited from his father and grandfather several large tracts of land lying to Queen Anne County, and a plantation devised to him by his brother, John Emory, Junior, who died to 1761, leaving a wife Sarah, but no children. Thomas Emory in his will, of January, 1.766, proved the following October, names no wife, indicating that she was then deceased. To hie eon, Thomas Lane Ennory, he devised the dwelling house and one-half of the land which had came to him from his brother John, and all of his Queen Anne County plantations ; to his son Richard he left all of his lands In Kent County His eldest child was Mary, who had married Thomas Carradine, of Queen Anne County, and he also had two other daughters, Ann and Sarah, who were minors when he made his will. Records on file at Centerville, In the Court House of Queen Anne County, show that Thomas Emory married after executing his will In January, 1766, buft died to the fall of that same year without having made provision for the Bible Records. 79 Risdon Plummer was torn on the 25th of August, 1809. Isaac Williams was born on the 9th of November, 1798. Nancy Starr was born on the 11th of April, 1805. Sarah Ann Clawson, daughter of Emory & Nancy Clawson was born on the 17th of May, 1826. James Emory Clawson, son of Emory & Nancy Clawson was born on the 21st day of October, 1828. William George Plummer, son of Risdon & Nancy Plummer was born on the 11th of August, 1831. Riadon Plummer, son of Risdon & Nancy Plummer was born on the 6th of December, 1833. Evidently a satisfactory settlenew wife, whose name was Martha ment wa« made, for Martha. Emory, In her will, dated a year or more later, September 1, 1766, devised to her two “daughters- In daw l step-daughters] Ann and Sarah Elmory ”, slaves, horsee and riding chair, “ and all other things that may be assigned to me as my full third part of my husband’s estate, to be equally divided between them, the above named Sarah and Ann Emory, when they arrive at the full age of sixteen years, and1 my will is that Thomas Oarradlne and his wife have the care and educating the above named Ann and Sarah, ” etc. This will was proved December 8, 1766. After the death of John Clawson, Junior, In 1809, Sarah (Emory) Clawson married Philemon Spencer, of Queen Anne County, whose first wife was Nancy Boggs. On August 13, 1610, a marriage contract was entered Into, by which It was agreed that all of the real and personal estate of which the said Sarah was possessed, should be held In trust by Charles Spencer until disposed of by the said Sarah in her last will and testament. Sarah (Emory) Clawson Spencer died In 1835, her will dated February 23, 183(5, being probated about six weeks Later and recorded at Denton, Caroline County. In this will she, however, leaves only .personal estate, the planta¬ tion, Cleves Fancy and eleven Ramble#, having passed to her eldest son, the before named Emory Clawson, who had died In 1828, leaving two children, Sarah Ann Clawson, aged two years, and Janies Emory Clawson, aged one year. Emory Clawson, In 1824, sold all bis right In eleven Fancy and eleven Rambles, and, at the death of Philemon Spencer, was living on part of his stepfather’s land In Caroline County. Arthur Clawson, another son of John and Sarah (Emory) Clawson, removed to Germantown, Hamilton County, Indiana, where he was residing In, 1853, his children, then living being: George Clawson, of Roesvllle, Ohio; Sarah Clawson, wife of Amos Williams of Hamilton County, Indiana; John Clawson and James Clawson of Illinois ; Mary A. Clawson, Miriam Clawson, Thomas Clawson and Nathan Clawson of Roseville. These children are all named In a letter dated January 4, 1853, from Arthur Clawson to his nephew, James Elmory Clawson. Emory Clawson married August 13, 1824, Nancy Starr, daughter of James and Nancy (or Aner) Tarbotton 'Starr, and sister of Aquiilla Starr, who mar¬ ried a daughter of Sarah Emory Clawson by her second husband, Philemon Spencer. James Starr was the eon of James Starr and Dauranla Ellis, daugh¬ ter of Zephanlas and Martha Ellis. Nancy Starr Clawson married second, October 21, 1830, R'lsdon Plummer; and third, August 8, 1839, Isaac Wil¬ liams, both named In the Bible record. Sarah Ann Clawson, only daughter of Emory and Nancy (Starr) Clawson, married Jonathan Scotten of Queen Anne County ; and James Emory Clawson, M.D., the only son, married, September 15, 18155, Mary Ek Lyne. Dr. James Emory Clawson lived for a time In Wilmington and Smyrna, Delaware, but finally settled in Philadelphia, where he died on April 13, 1967, His children were : Mary Clawson, wife of Albert Roop, of New York City ; Annie Claw¬ son, widow of Willi aim Howard Keen, of Alden Park Manor, Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia ; John Lyne Clawson, of the Barclay, RUttenhouse Square, Phila¬ delphia, and Aquilla Starr Clawson and Lewis F. Aquilla Starr Williams, son of Isaac & Nancy Williams was born on the 19th of August, 1840. Martha Augusta Williams, daughter of Isaac & Nancy Williams was born on the 29 of February, 1844. MARRIAGES. Emory Clawson and Nancy Starr were married on the 5th day of August, 1824. Kisdon Plummer and Nancy Clawson were married on the 21st of October, 1830. Isaac Williams and Nancy Plummer were married on the 8th of August, 1839. Isaac Williams and Eliza A. Coursey were married on the 9th of November, 1845. DEATHS. Emory Clawson Died on the 22ond of September, 1828. Kisdon Plummer Died on 26th of September, 1837. Nancy Williams wife of Isaac Williams, Died July the 4th, 1844. January the 11th, Anno Domini One thousand seven Hundred and Sixty one, aged sixty and three years, and was buried the 14th day of the same month. Captain John Emory was born 1698, died 1761. The funeral Bermon of Arthur Emory. Thomas Lane Emory, Senr., was born in the year 1751. He died in 1828, aged 77 years. Thomas Lane Emory, Junr., was born in the year 1789. He died 1835, aged 46 years. Eliza Hart Emory, wife of Thomas Lane Emory, Jr., born 1795, died 1852. Daniel Grant Emory bora February 14, 1828; died February 14, 1886.
