PARENTS OF ELEANOR ANN JENKINS AND MARY E. JENKINS OF NEW YORK, NEBRASKA, AND PENNSYLVANIA Susan Kilbride* iss Eleanor Ann Jenkins married Mr. Alexander Bain on Monday, 16 September 1844, in New York City in a ceremony performed by Baptist minister William R. Williams. A copy of their marriage certificate, which lists one of the witnesses as Catharine Jenkins, has been passed down in the family and is transcribed in The Rain Family Tree, which traces various branches of the Bain family in their move from Scotland to Canada and, in Alexander’s case, to New York and then to Nebraska.1 It does not identify the parents of Eleanor Jenkins. The search for her par¬ ents led to a sister and her family in Pennsylvania. CATHERINE (WILLIAMS) JENKINS The first elite to the puzzle was a scrap of paper in my grandparents’ estate that included some genealogical information. Concerning Eleanor’s mother it stated: ... Katherine Williams Jenkins— Williamsburg oldest town (city) on Long Island (Long Island now Brookland)? Williamsburg is now part of Brooklyn, but Katherine was not related to the founder of Williamsburg, as the note possibly implies. However, Alex¬ ander and Eleanor did live in Williamsburg in 1850, when Catharine Jenkins, 50, born in Scotland, was living with them.2 By I860 the family was in Nebraska City, Otoe County, Nebraska; Catharine, 59, born in Eng¬ land, was again living with them. Catharine was not found in later cen¬ suses. Mrs. E. JENKINS A chronologically reasonable Jenkins-Williams marriage was found in New York City: On 2 December 1820 at the Oliver Street Baptist Church, Rev. John Williams, minister, married "Mr. Thomas l). Jenkins and Miss Cathrine E. Williams, both of Brooklyn Long Island, wit: Mr. Richard Jones, wit: Mrs. Mary Gilbert, both of Brooklyn, L Island.” It is interesting to note that, although the churches were different, Rev. John Williams was the father of Rev. William R. Williams, the Baptist minister who would marry Eleanor Ann Jenkins and Alexander Bain in 1844. As no other Thomas Jenkins appears in the Brooklyn directories, he may have been the Thomas Jenkins of Brooklyn, kings County, carpenter, who on 14 April 1826 stated that for four years last past he had been a resident of Brooklyn, although the occupation does not match/’ None of the Thomas Jenkins who were heads of household in greater New York City in 1820 seem to be a young bachelor. Thomas does not appear in the Brooklyn or Manhattan directories after 1828, nor is he found in the 1830 census in the New York City area. MARY E. (JENKINS) ROORBACH There is no probate record for Catharine (Williams) Jenkins in Nebraska, but there is a file for the administration of the estate of Catharine E. Jenkins in the New York County Surrogate’s Court. It includes a com¬ pleted, preprinted statement made 10 October 1866 by Eleanor A. Bain: 1 am the daughter of the said deceased, that said deceased departed this life at Nebraska on the 1 1th of June 1866 without leaving any last Will and Tes¬ tament, to my knowledge, information or belief; that said deceased died a natural death and died possessed of certain personal property in the State of ’ Gabriel Disosway, The liarliest Churches of Nete York anil Its Vicinity (New York: the author, 1865), 201-2. ** Aklen Spooner, Brooklyn Directory. Roorback, a daughter of full age resid¬ ing in St. Clair, Penn, her only next of kin; that said deceased was a widow and was not at or immediately previous to her death an inhabitant of the County of New York, but of Nebraska City, Nebraska.7 Mary E. Roorbach was easily found in St. Clair, Schuylkill County, Penn¬ sylvania, as the wife of Charles L. Roorbach (see Genealogical Summary). AMELIA (— ) ANDREWS In May 1874 at the Schuylkill County Orphans’ Court, John Ogilvie Roor¬ bach, a son over the age of fourteen of Mary Roorbach, deceased, requested that Mary Amelia Roorbach be appointed his guardian. Minors needed guardians to oversee property (not their person); those over four¬ teen could chose their own guardian; John chose his older sister. They requested permission to sell his undivided one-fourth interest in a lot in St. Clair to be sold privately to Peter Quirin for $800. The town lot was identified as purchased by Amelia Andrews 18 October 1849, who ... in and by her last Will & testament in writing bearing date the 19th day of June AD 1860 did give and devise the same unto the said Mary Roorbach in fee simple.8 The petition indicates that Amelia Andrews’ probate record was filed in the New York County Surrogate’s Court. The 19June 1860 will of Ame¬ lia Andrews of New York City gave to Mrs. Mary Roorbach the real estate owned in St. Clair, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, and live hundred dol¬ lars. Everything else went to her daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Andrews Lyon, wife of Robert S. Lyon. On 10 September 1863 executrix Carolyn Lyon stated she was “the only child heir and next of kin of said deceased [Amelia Andrews].”9 PHII.O ANDREWS What was the relationship of Amelia Andrews to Mary Roorbach? We sus¬ pect it must have been close for Amelia to give Mary property and five hundred dollars, a large sum of money at that time. The 3 May 1848 will of Philo Andrews of New York City gave all his property to his wife Ame¬ lia. The will was witnessed by Mary J. [Jenkins] Roorbach of 1 1th Street and Emma L. Staats of Third Avenue, New York City. On 2 November Goods, Chattels & Credits of Catharine U. This would explain the censuses and the close relationship between Mary and the Andrews family. The connection was apparently that of neighbors, not relatives, as Philo almost surely came from the Connecticut Andrews family that had long used the given name Philo, and Amelia was born in Massachusetts. Thomas and Catharine may both have been Welsh, as stated in Eleanor’s 1880 census record (unlike Catherine’s own listing in 1850 and I860). They were married by a Welsh minister. In 1910 and 1920 Mary’s son William gave his mother’s birthplace as Wales, apparently having con¬ fused the birth places of his mother and maternal grandmother. GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY 1. THOMAS D.1 JENKINS was born say 1795 (estimating marriage at 25) possibly in Wales. He died probably between 1828 and 1830 in Manhat¬ tan. He married 2 December 1820 at the Oliver Street Baptist Church, New York City, CATHARINE E. WILLIAMS of New York.16 Catharine was born about 1801 possibly in Wales and died 1 1 June 1866. 10 This indicates she was a Quaker. ELEANOR ANN2 JENKINS was born about 1822 or 1823 in New York, probably in Brooklyn, where her father resided at the time. She died 19 March 1888 in Kansas City, Missouri, and was buried 21 March in Elm¬ wood Cemetery, Kansas City.17 She married 16 September 1844 in New York City ALEXANDER BAIN.18 Alexander was born 24 December 1817 and baptized 30 December, son of William Bain and Mary Mackenzie, in Forres, Elgin County, Scotland,19 and died 1 1 March 1910 in Nebraska City, Otoe County, Nebraska.20 In I860 their family was in Williamsburg, New York, and included two children and Eleanor’s mother Catherine Jenkins.21 By the 1856 Nebraska territorial census, they were in Otoe County.22 They resided in the Camp Creek area, near the southern Otoe County-northern Nemaha County border. In I860 they were in Otoe County, with six children and Eleanor’s mother, Catherine.2' Neither Alexander or Catherine was in the 17 Kansas City Times, 20 and 21 March 1888: “March 19 at 4 o’clock p in., Mrs. E.
