Eugene Augustus Hoffman ( 1829- 1902)' was an Episcopal minis¬ ter whose career spanned more than fifty years. From 1851 to 1879 he served sequentially as rector at four churches: Christ Church (Eliza¬ beth, New Jersey), St. Mary’s (Burlington, New Jersey), Grace Church (Brooklyn, New York), and St. Mark’s (Philadelphia). In 1879 Hoffman was appointed dean of the General Theological Seminary in Manhattan, where he remained until his death.2 1 1 is personal record book contains detailed and carefully enumerated entries for the rites he officiated: 1 ,225 baptisms, 398 burials, 176 mar¬ riages, and 842 confirmations; from his first baptism 31 August 1831 at Christ Church, Elizabeth, to his last baptism 27 April 1902 at Chapel of (lie Good Shepherd, General Theological Seminary.' Hoffman’s tenure at St. Mark’s in Philadelphia began in 1869 and con¬ tinued until bis calling to the General Theological Seminary in 1879, dur¬ ing which he conducted his 82nd to 149th marriages, presented below.
