&03 PiMaalP2MWE The Pennsylvania GENEALOGICAL Magazine ktmmaimmimmutimmilwAmgAvagikilizegiR The Stuart Branch of the Family of Penn BRIGADIER OLIVER F. G. HOGG, C.B.E. F.S.A., F.R.HIST.S., F.S.G. D ESCENDANTS of William Penn in the Penn-Gaskell line have been associated with Philadelphia life since 1788 . Representatives of the English Stuarts, the other eventual co-heirs of the Founder, while nearly all living in England, have also been familiar here because of their retention of important Penn heirlooms, as well as remnants of Proprietary rights. Mrs. Frederick Robert Wynne of Church Crookham, Hampshire, (No. 33 of the following record) by law the "heir-general" of the Penn family, has deposited the final nucleus of the family archives with the Bedfordshire Record Office. Her younger sister, Dr. Rosalind Esme Pole Stuart of Folkestone, Kent, still holds certain Philadelphia quit-rents which have descended to her through generations of her Penn ancestors. In addition, various Stuarts, Knoxes, Milnes-Gaskells, Hoggs, Wilbrahams, and other descendants of the Stuart branch have visited in Pennsylvania officially and privately for three-quarters of a century. The usual policy of this Magazine, in presenting the genealogical record of a man's descendants, is to omit data on his living progeny. But William Penn belongs to history as the Founder of Pennsylvania, and some of his descendants were actively concerned with and involved in the history of Pennsylvania's colonial development. Although none of the Stuart or Penn-Gaskell descendants have been actively involved in Pennsylvania's later history, they are none-the-less extensions of Penn himself, continuous links between the past and the future. Their col151 152 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine lected records, added to those of their Penn progenitors, therefore enlarge the overall picture of the Founder. All of these records furnish prime evidence of the manner in which each generation of the family, during a period of four hundred years, adjusted to changing circumstances, and indicate the degree to which the infusion of new blood during that same period has reinforced or diluted basic characteristics. Published genealogical data on the nineteenth-century members of the Stuart line has been limited to the 1896 - 1899 account in The Family of William Penn by the late Howard M. Jenkins, and to the brief recapitulation presented in this Magazine in 1967 (Volume XXV, No. 2, 93 - 96), intentionally kept short in the knowledge that a more extended account of the Stuart branch would be forthcoming. In this year of the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the Founder's death, it is only. appropriate that Brigadier Hogg's researches, by augmenting the earlier accounts, have now brought this branch of the Penn family into the twentieth century.' — Editor. SOPHIA MARGARET PENN, granddaughter of William Penn, the Founder of Pennsylvania, was the daughter of his son Thomas Penn, Chief Proprietor of Pennsylvania, and the latter's wife, Lady Juliana Fermor. Known also as Sophia Margaretta and Sophia Margaret Juliana Penn, she was born 25 December 1764. At the Church of St. George, Hanover Square, Middlesex, she married on 3 May 1796, The Honorable and Most Reverend WILLIAM STUART, D.D., later Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland. He was born in March, 1755, the fourth son of John, 3rd Earl of Bute, Knight of the Garter and Prime Minister under King George III. William Stuart was educated at Winchester and at St. John's College, Cambridge, of which he was M.A. in 1774, and D.D. in 1789. After ordination, he was vicar of Luton, Bedfordshire for fourteen years until he became Canon of Windsor in 1793. Later appointed to the See of St. David's, Stuart became Archbishop of Armagh in 1800. After their marriage, Archbishop Stuart and his wife lived at Luton Hoo, Bedfordshire, and at 36 Hill Street, London (the Stuart lease of the latter residence only running out about twenty-five years ago). The Archbishop died at his London house on 6 May 1822, in tragic circum1 Brigadier Hogg's record is essentially a basic outtme of the Stuart branch of the family and, beyond listing honors and civil or military urvice, makes LICI pretension to being a comprehensive biographical record of individual members of the family. Its great value lies in the collation for doe first time, in a concise fumework, of data on the family in such sources as Burke's Peerage and other related works which are not every. where readily available to researchers on this side of the Atlantic. (This, and all subsequent footnotes, have been supplied by the Editor.) Stuart Branch of the Family of Penn 153 stances, told in detail in Howard M. Jenkins, The Family of William Penn, 191-192. Briefly, during his last illness his wife was his devoted nurse. Unfortunately, she poured out some medicine for him from the wrong bottle which had been handed to her. It was laudanum and the poison killed him. While dying from its effects, he managed to scrawl this little note of comfort to his wife: "I could not have lived long, my dear love, at all events." This occurrence was instrumental in securing passage in England of the law that poisons must be sold in bottles of distinctive shape and usually of dark blue, green or brown color. Sophia Margaret (Penn) Stuart died 29 April 1847, and was buried in the Stuart family vault at Luton.
