Langs of Philadelphia and New Jersey from Bischweiler in 1750

LANGS OF PHILADELPHIA AND EW }ER EY FROMBI CHWEILERI 1750 30 November 1750 on the Sandwich 1 Jacob Langs (signature) This surname was originaUy Lanx. It eventually becam th phonetically similar Langs. In the gothic handwriting used by the Lutheran Bi chweiler pastor, the letters x and g are remarkably similar. The urname is occa ionally misinterpreted by transcribers and indexers of Bischweiler record a Laux, which i a legitimate French surname. The immigrant Jacob Langs was identified through his sister, Susanna Dorothea Lanx/Langs, wife of Johann Georg Bachoffen, who arrived in Philadelphia two years after Jacob (see "Bachoffen of Philadelphia and New Jersey from Bischweiler in 1752," PGM 44:245-56). When the spouse of an immigrant is identified, the standard American sources ar examined for that name, with a focus on family members who might also have immigrated, based on a lack of Bischweiler records for later life evencs. The surnames Lang and Langs are distinct in Bischweiler. 2 Lang is common and Langs rare as a European name, so it likely that some American records may be recorded or abstracted without the s. Fortunately, Jacob could sign his name, so we have a unambiguous record of his arrival. Thereafter, however, only records for Jacob Lang are found in Pennsylvania, with nothing about them to indicate which, if any, belong to the Bischweiler immigrant. Since the family was Lutheran in Bischweiler, the gateway Philadelphia congregation of St. Michael's and Zion is the most likely place to find mention of Jacob. The following early records were found, none involving known Bischweiler surnames:3 ■ 28 April 1756. Jacob Lange and wife Anna Maria were sponsors for a child of Joh. Ludwig Horst and wife Cathrina (formerly widow Hattenfield). ■ 9 January 1757. Jacob Lang and Anna Maria Lang(e) were sponsors for a child of Johan Henrich Wchemcyer ( 46 miles from the ferry, in Gouccstcr [sic)) and wife Cathrina. • 3 May 1757. Jacob Lang and wife Maria and Walter Swab and wife Dorothea were sponsors for a child of Georg Kallfass and Catharina. Jacob Lang and wife Maria and Hans Martin Curfass and wife Margaretha were sponsors for a child of Georg Califass and Catharina. • 5 December 1762. Jacob Lang and wife Anna Maria, who live 18 miles from here in Jersey, were sponsors for a child of Johann Georg Kallfass and Catharina. • 12 February 1764. Jacob Lang and wife were sponsors for a child of Johan Reks and Magdalena. Because of the many immigrants to Philadelphia who did not remain in Pennsylvania, Bockstruck's Denizations and Naturalizations is one of the standard sources checked. It identifies a Jacob Langs who was naturalized in New Jersey in 1759. 4 His signature is on a naturalization petition of that year, no county given, which would indicate that he had been in New Jersey since 1752.5 This, then, identifies the 1750 immigrant as likely being from Bischweiler and the New Jersey resident. He might be the Jacob Lang who entered, altered, and renewed earmarks in 1752, 1762, and 1772,6 or the Jacob Lange [at] Squancom, Shrewsbury Township, Monmouth County, who was taxed on 100 acres, 3 horses, 6 cows, and 1 person in February 1780, 7 or the Jacob Lang/Laing in Bridgewater Township, Somerset County, or Shrewsbury Township, Monmouth County. 8 Jacob's presence at the church may have been a contributing factor to an error concerning the immigrant Susanna Dorothea (Langs) Bachofin. The baptismal record at Bischweiler Lutheran states that Susanna Dorothea Langs was born 11 8bris [October] 1708, baptized 11 8bris, daughter of Anton Langs and Susanna Magdalena KleinhauS(in). 9 However, her burial information at St. Michael's and Zion Lutheran, Philadelphia, says: Buried 30 December 1775. Susanne Dorothea Backofin was born 23 December 1709 in Bischweiler in Elsas, her father was Jacob Langs. For 44 years she was married to the old widower Georg Backofen and they had thirteen children of whom three are still living, died 29 December. 10 GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY 1.
