BENJAMIN SAYRE’S ACCOUNT BOOK, 1848-49 MONTROSE, SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY contributed by Ionise It. Shafer II eniamin Sayre was born 8 November 1791 in Southampton, Long JL3Island, New York, son of Daniel and Joyce (Huntting) Sayre. In 1794 the family moved to Shingle Kill (now Cairo), Greene County, New York. Benjamin married 12 September 1816 Priscilla Chapman, whose family had moved to Greene County from Saybrook, Connecticut. Soon after, the couple moved to Montrose, Susquehanna County, where they had eight children: Anne Maria, Catharine Cochran, Samuel Hunting, Benjamin Chapman, Lydia Jones, Priscilla, Daniel Durclle, and Mary Priscilla.1 Prom 1848 to 1 856 Sayre kept an account book in which he recorded the daily activities of his farming business. The transcript below covers the first twelve months of Benjamin's eight-year account. 1 1 is terse notes contain little genealogical data or reference to family members. The account’s primary value to researchers is in the description of the sea¬ sonal cycles of weather, work, and workmen in nineteenth-century, rural Pennsylvania. Many of our ancestors spent their days and years doing many of the same things under very similar conditions.
