In this case, a mar¬ riage record for a son on Mackinac Island, Michigan, provides the answer. JOHN DOUSMAN John Dousman was born probably in Germany. His earliest located appearance in American records is a 9 January 1769 deed in which John Dousman of Fort Pitt purchased for £10 from Anthony Waller an improvement eight miles from the mouth of the Youghany, adjoining an improvement of John Fox on the east. The witnesses were Jacob Bailsman and Blipps Wurtzel.* When the land officially became available for sale in the spring of MW, John Touseman made application 13 June 1769 for it.2 The tract was surveyed in 1770 as about 100 acres* and given the name Baker’s Hope, but the patent for about 100 acres was not issued until 1814, long after John’s death, to his son-in-law Anthony DrevouA It appears that this particular tract was for investment purposes, as later records consistently identify John and his family as residing in Pittsburgh, where in 1770 he acquired a town Iot.s With the establishment of Bedford County in 1771, the Fort Pitt area came under its jurisdiction, and John appears on its first extant tax list ( 1773) in Pitt Township as John Thousman in the “single Freemen" cate¬ gory.6 In 1773 Westmoreland County was established from the western portion of Bedford County, and John appeared on the docket of the Court of Quarter Sessions for Westmoreland County for the April term James L Hansen, 1213 Debra Fane, Madison, \V1 53704, is reference librarian at the Wisconsin Historical Society. True bill process. Award Issued.” In the October term 1774 he appeared on the civil court docket with Philip Riely as codefendant in a suit for debt brought by Thomas Cunningham.8 He was appointed a constable 23 February 1775 for what is now Pittsburgh.9 He was again appointed constable 17 April 1776 in the town of Pittsburgh but apparently chose not to assume the burden, for “John Donsman, who was appointed a eonsta[ble| in the Town of Pittsburgh and refusing to swear into the said Office, it is ord[ered] that for the s’d contempt he be fined £2."10 In 1778 he was a member of a “Volunteer company of 52 officers and privates in Pitts¬ burgh, under General Hand, for three months from May 1, 1778,” David Duncan, Captain.11 He was appointed deputy sheriff 27 April 1779 for one month.12 From the above records it appears that John Donsman was probably not a young adult in the 1770s to be appointed to such responsible posi¬ tions. It seems likely that he was in his thirties, although he was still single in 1773. In the 178.3 tax list for Rostraver Township, Westmoreland County, John Donsman is listed as owning 100 acres, but with no horses, cattle, sheep, or inhabitants, undoubtedly the Baker's Hope tract. In Pitt Township, Westmoreland County, Jn ’<> Donsman is listed as holding no acreage, 2 horses, no cattle or sheep, and no inhabitants.1ÿ In 1786 John Donsman was taxed 7 pence in Pitt Township, Westmoreland County. 1 1 In 1787 he was taxed in Pitt Township for 2 cows, I house, and 1 lot; in 1788 Jno. However, given Jacob’s relationship with these families as witness to deeds, guardian of John's children, and baptismal sponsor for two children of Cather¬ ine by her second husband, some relationship seems probable. r Allegheny County Orphan's Court Docket, page 10 (Fill. #800,288). 20 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 47 AUGUSTINE LEAPHART Augustine Leaphart came to Allegheny County front Hampshire County, |now West] Virginia, where Augitsteen Leaphart was on the state enu¬ meration in 1782 with 8 whites and 0 blacks.28 Augustin Leaphart was on the personal property tax rolls there in 1782 with 1 white tithe, no slaves, 6 horses, and 7 cattle, but is not on subsequent lists.29 He first appears on record in the Pittsburgh area when he signed the IS February 1787 peti¬ tion requesting the creation of Allegheny County/0 Thomas Chambers of Pittsburgh, saddler, sold 8 November 1789 to Augustine l.epliart , carpen¬ ter, for £23 lot #2 46, Woods Plan/1 Augustine Liephart of Allegheny County sold 17 March 1790 to Martin Cooper of Pittsburgh for £49 lot #246 in Woods Plan; witnesses William Weaver and Jacob Bailsman.'2 In 1790 Augustine Leephart was on the Allegheny County census, in the portion taken from Washington County, with I male under 16, I male 16 and over, and 4 females/-'' Augustus Liphart and his wife Catherine of Milton Twp. I sic], Allegheny County, made another deed I 1 October 1790 transferring lot #246 to Martin Cooper, presumably to clear title.'1 In 1794 Augustin l.epliart was taxed in Mifflin Township, Allegheny County/*5 About December 179S Augustine became an original lot owner at McKeesport, acquiring lot #186/(> he lost that lot in 1802 when it was sold by the Allegheny County Sheriff to recover the cost of a judgment against Augustine in a suit brought by II. II. Bracken ridge.'" CATHERINE (BARHKMAN) (DOUSMAN) LEAPHART Catherine’s surname is identified in the 3 August 1821 marriage record of her son John at Ste. Anne de Miehilimaekinac, Mackinac Island, Michigan, in which he is described as a native of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, an adult son of John Donsman and Catherine liarekman. 11 The most substantial account of the various branches of the liarekman family is in the publications of June liarekman.'2 She describes the family of Peter Ilarrickman (about 1726-1791) of Germany, which resided in Frederick County, Maryland by 1764;'* then in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, 1771-1784;“ and finally in Knox County, Indiana. In Miss Barekman’s extensive research on this relatively uncommon surname, there is no other family of the name with the right chronological and geographical fit to which Catherine (Barekman) Dous¬ man could be connected. Additionally, these Barekmans had numerous connections with the Dousmans in western Pennsylvania. ■ ■ ■ ■ 1783, Kostraver Township, Westmoreland County. John Dousman purchased a number of small household items in the sale of “late property of John Barrackman deceased of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania” [brother of Catherine Barekman).'*8 April 1787, Westmoreland County. John Dousman was involved in a civil court suit against Peter Barrickman. John and Catherine Dousman s son Michael2 named one of his children John Barrickman Dousman.*’0 In her family compilation Miss Barekman lists Catherine as born in Germany about 1747.*51 There are, however, no birth or baptismal dates for the children of Peter Barrickman. Since Catherine’s last known child was born in 1792, she was likely born closer to 1753, hence not one of the two children who immigrated in 1749. GF.NHAI.C )GICAI. She married second probably in 1789 (child born in 1790) AUGUSTINE1 LEAPHART, who was born by say 1757 (estimating 25 when head of household in 1782) and died after the 1810 census. JACOB2 LEIBIIARD, born 17 August 1792, baptized 21 July 1793 by Johann Wilhelm Weber, pastor of the German Reformed congregations of West¬ moreland County, child of Augustin and Catharina Liebhard, sponsors Jacob and Iilisabetha Bailsman.6 It seems likely he went west and became involved in the fur trade. In 1818 William Clark wrote to William Christy of the St. Charles County, Missouri, Circuit Court authorizing Christy to issue a license to Jacob l.eipliart and Co. to trade with the Sac, Fox, and other Indians below the Des Moines Rivcr.6K Jacob l.eaphart sued John Laird about 1824 in the Michilimaekinae County, Michigan Territory, Cir¬ cuit Court.69 Jacob Leephart filed a claim against the Chippewa in the treaty of Chicago in 1833. 11 Jacob I.ephart filed a trader's claim against the Ottawa and Chippewa of upper Michigan under the treaty of 1836.71 He was back in Allegheny County in 1850 and I860.72 6-ÿ Allegheny County Deeds 1 2:378 (Fill. # 1,497,867).
