PARIS OF PHILADELPHIA AND NEW YORK FROM BISCHWEILER IN 1731 AND 1750 11 September 1731 on the Britannia Anna Maria Henniger, 26 {husband Michael Henninger, 36, of Hatten} son Conrat Henniger, 91 3 November 1750 on the Brotherhood Pierre Paris ( cursive signature) Isaac Paris (cursive signature) 2 (New York) Franz Ludwig (Fran~ois Louis) Paris (Carolina) Susanne Marie (Paris) Rausmann Poulet's chart and the Stammta/el on this family were helpful, but not error free. 3 For example, when there were siblings of the same name, one of whom died young, both charts occasionally merged or confused them. Both Poulet's chart and the Stammtaf el for this family indicate that Franz Ludwig (Fran~ois Louis) Paris, brother of Peter Paris of Philadelphia, had gone to New York. He doesn't appear in Strassburger and Hinke, so he probably went directly to New York City. Susanna Paris, born in 1702, is said to have gone to Carolina. Poulet's chart does not give her a husband; the Stammta/el splits her in two, making her a sibling of herself. She married Hans Heinrich Rausmann (interpreted as Reichmann in the Stammtafel) in Bischweiler in 1725. 4 With common given names and high mortality, confusion can occur. The Stammtafel replaces the birth date of Jacob\ son of Pierre 8 Paris (Antoinec, Germain°, Noil-) and Marie Pierson, who was born 10 October 1697, with that of his cousin Jacob\ son of Daniel 8 Paris (Antoinec, Germain°, Noil-) and Susanne Marie Pierson, who was born 6 July 1698. Their baptismal records unambiguously name their parents, so the chart See introductory material in "Connections between Bischweiler, Alsace, and America in the 1700s," PGM 44:12-21, for more information on methods and sources. 1 Strassburgcr and Hinke, Pennsylvania German Pioneers, 1:49-53; 2:38-43; Lists 16A, 8, C. 2 Strassburger and Hinke,Pennsylvania German Pioneers, 1:447; 2:521; List 159C. 3 "Paris," Bischweiler Stammtafeln, 6: 116; and "Paris," Genealogies des famiUes de l'Egl[tse] Franf[atse] de Bischwiller, 54. 4 Evangeltsch-ReformierteKircheBtschweiler, Heiraten 1710-1746, #252. 42 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 44 (2005) 2005 Paris 43 i clearly wrong. The chart also says that Jacob son of Daniel was born in July 1698 and died 6 June 1698, a date that precedes the birth date on the chart. The Stammtafel shows that Jacob son of Pierre married Elizabeth Etter and died 12 April 1735.5 Jacob and Elizabeth's second child was Isaac Paris, the cousin who immigrated to Philadelphia with Peter Paris before moving to upstate New York, so this is an important connection for descendants. Whenever there are discrepancies, it is extremely unsafe to make assumptions about which part of the chart is incorrect. The problem is resolved by reading all records, which point to the same answer. • 16 October 1697. Jacob, son of Pierre Paris and Marie Pierson, was born, baptized 20 October at Bischweiler French Reformed, marraines included Jeanne Paris wife of Louis Jean. 6 • 6 July 1698. Jacob, son of Daniel Paris and Susanne Marie Pierson, baptized at Bischweiler French Reformed. 7 • 6 August I 698. Jacob, son of Daniel Paris, age 24 days, buried at Bischweiler French Reformed. 8 • Jacob, son of Daniel Paris clothworker and Elizabeth Huguenin, born 26 July 1707, baptized 28 July at Bischweiler French Reformed, marraines included Marie Ribelet, wife of Albert Saucourt9 This second son of Daniel named Jacob indicates the first son had died (during this study, no examples were noticed in Bischweiler of living children by different wives having the same name). • Jacob Paris was confirmed 12 April 1713 at Bischweiler French Reformed; he is identified as the son of Pierre, age sixteen, baptized 16 October 1697. 10 • Jacob Paris married by say 1724 (child baptized in 1725) Maria Elisabet Etter. • Jacob Paris husband of Maria Elisabet Etter died by 2 March 1746 when Maria Elisabeth Paris, widow of the late Jacob Paris citizen and shoemaker, married second 2 March 1746 at Bischweiler German Reformed Peter Grau, citizen. 11 • Jacob Paris, citizen and shoemaker, died 12 April 1735 of a fieve pourpree [crimson fever], buried 13 April at Bischweiler French Reformed, age 37 years 6 months at his death [born about October 1697]. 12 This matches the birth of Jacob son of Pierre. Thus, the mistakes were in the birth date of Jacob son of Pierre and in the death date of Jacob son of Daniel. The rest of the construction on the charts for them appears correct. Another problem concerns Franz Ludwig Paris. The Stammtafel has a Franz Ludwig who was born and died in 1725. It also has a Franz Ludwig who went to New York (no birth date given). However, there are no 5 It is likely the marriage and death belong to the same individual because Jacob and Elizabeth's last child was baptized in 1734 and she remarried in 1746. 6 Eglise Reformee FranfQise de Bisch willer, Baptemes 1680-1722, page 130. 7 Eglise Reformee Franfaise de Bischwiller, Baptemes 1680-1722, page 132. 8 bglise Refonnee Franfaise de Bischwiller, Sepultures 1688-17SO, unpaginated. 9 Egltse Rlfonnee FranfQise de Bischwiller, Baptemes 1680-1722, page 165. io Eglise Reformee FranfQise de Bischwiller, Cathecumenes 1704-1712. 11 Evangelisch-Refonnierte Kirche Bischweiler, Heiraten 1710-17 46, #494. 12 Eglise Rlfonnee FranfQise de Bischwiller, Sepultures 1688-1750, unpaginatcd. 44 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 44 baptismal records for this second child. Poulet's chart says he has gone to New York (it omits children who died young), but leaves the birth year blank. Both charts also add an Isaac to this family, without birth date, and indicate that he went to the New World (handwriting difficult to read), ignoring the cousin Isaac born in 1727 for whom there was no muriage or burial. hence a much better candidate for the emigrant.13 These types of problems strongly suggest that information about emigration was obtained through interviews, and suffers from the problems familiar to genealogists as they try to match or-al history with records, particularly for events that are not about the immediate family. The construction given below follows the charts, except where they are dearly wrong, but points out some problematic areas. Because the family had so many emigrants, potential problems are not of minor importance. Descendants are strongly advised to read all records in their ancestral line to confirm the lineage. PARIS IN BISCHWEILER FROM AIGLE, BERN, SWITZERLAND This family illustrates another confusing factor in Bischweiler-people moved around much more than we might have expected. Two brothers of the Susanna who went to Carolina were noted as being in Switzerland. Quite a few Bischweiler records mention Canton Bern, Switzerland. Toe following entries were found through a careful reading of the catechumen lists at Bischweiler French Reformed. This reveals a potentially serious problem, in that the given names involved-Pierre, Jacob, and Abraham-were among the most popular in Bischweiler. • Pierre Paris, son of Jacob Paris soldier of Aigle of the Canton of Bern, Switzer• land, come into the country for one and a half years to earn a living, age sixteen years and four months, was confirmed 28 March 1714. • Abraham Paris, son of Abraham Paris laborer of the same place as the preced• ing Pierre Paris, his cousin, came also into the county for the same reason, age seventeen, orphan of father and of mother, of brothers and of sisters. 14 GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY 1. As was common in Bischweiler when this occurred, the baptisms of their children occurred in the church of the parent of the same sex; sons were baptized at Bischweiler Lutheran, and daughters were baptized at Bischweiler French Reformed. No baptism was found for son Jacob, but it is likely that the couple had a first child born earlier than four years after their marriage. (However, the immigration of another Isaac in 1751 and the naturalization of Isaac, Jr., do permit another person of the name.) 151Eglise Reformee Franfaise de Bischwi/Jer, Baptemes 1722-1751, #133. 152 Eglise Ref ormee Franfaise de Bischwiller, Sepultures 1688-1750 , unpaginated. 153 Eglise Reformee Franfaise de Bischwi/Jer, Baptemes 1722-1751, #154. 154Eglise Reformee Franfaise de Bischwiller, Baptemes 1722-1751, #197. 2005 Paris 57 a.ge 3 year , daughter of Jan George Tyraue-r citizen of Berncck, Switzerland. Pet r married first by October 1753 ANNA MARIA -?-, by whom he apparently had no surviving children. Her surname might have b n Siver (he sponsored a baptism in April 1753 with Anna Maria Siv r) or auerman (they sponsored Sauerman baptisms in 1755 and 1757) or Schwing (they sponsored Schwing baptisms in 1755 and 1757). 2 He married second by early 1759 MARIA MAGDALENA/HELENA WD.D, 15 daughter of Abraham Wild and Anna Barbara Renaud. 9 The unnamed wife of Peter Paris was buried 1 April 1778 at First Reformed, Philadelphia. 160 (For information on her family, see "Wild of Philadelphia from Bischweiler in 1751.") He married third by 1782 SARAHSTONEBURNER, daughter of L onard and Mary (Engle) Stoneburner, by whom he apparently had no children. He died between 1773 when he is mentioned in a newspaper advertisement and 26 February 1787 when Johan Daniel Gros and Catharine Paris, executors of the estate of Isaac Paris, late of Stone Arabia (now the town of Palatine), Montgomery County, ew York, petition d for relief. 178 He arrived in Philad lphia 3 ovemb r 1750. He may be the I aac Parish taxed in High Street Ward in 1756. 179 He appears in the records of the Reformed Church in Stone Arabia, Montgomery County, New York, beginning in 1760. The 1773 newspaper advertisement clearly identifies him as the brother of Peter. He was not the only man at Stone Arabia with Philadelphia connections. Some of the Hillegas family were there. He married by say 1760 CATHERINA-?-. She is named at the birth of three of their children. Isaac and/or Catharina sponsored baptisms at Stone Arabia between 1760 and 1770, including one Peter Hillegas. 180 Isaac Paris and Isaac Paris, Jr., were naturalized in New York 20 March 1762. 181 No other adult Isaac has been found; apparently he was simply adding the name of his infant son to his naturalization. On 3 July 1766 he was an administrator of the estate of Mathew Ward in "Steen Rabe." 182 Children of /saac 1 and Catharina (-?-) Paris: 2 i.
