They Went West Pennsylvanians in Ohio Transcribed by CARL THURMAN SMITH, F.G.S.P. T HE following funeral entries of Pennsylvanians who died in Ohio are extracted from the transcript made by the Rev. Carl Smith from the original record begun in 1824 by the Rev. H. Heinke, pastor of Salem Lutheran Church, Ellerton, Ohio. Until 1852, the pastor entered no biographical information to speak of, and few ages. One entry only indicates place of birth, that for John Snepp, given below. From 1853 to 1865, a new pastor included only the age of the deceased, then from 1865 to 1867, occasionally the parentage or spouse's name, and age. From then on, the practice seemed to be to include place of birth and other information if the deceased was not a native of Ohio. For this present record, the only entries which have been extracted are of former Pennsylvanians. The first meeting house in Jefferson Township was a log structure, built jointly by the Lutheran and German Reformed people in 1812. It was known as Salem Church, and was near Bear Creek, at Ellerton on the Dayton-Germantown Pike, southwest of Dayton about nine miles.
