In Memoriam William Buchanan Gold, Jr. I T IS WITH DEEP REGRET that we announce the death of William Buchanan Gold, Jr., 84, an Honorary President of the Genealogical So¬ ciety of Pennsylvania, on Sunday, August 9, 1998, at a retirement commu¬ nity in Atco, New Jersey. Prior to residing in Atco, he and his family had lived for many years in Spring Lake, New Jersey. A Pennsylvania native, William Gold graduated in 1931 from William Penn Charter School as valedictorian of his class, in 1935 from Princeton University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and in 1938 from Harvard Law School, where he received the Marshall Prize. Through 1940 he served as law secretary to Justice James B. Drew of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. After serving in World War II, Mr. Gold returned to law, becoming a partner in the firm of Snyder and Bent in 1952; he remained with the firm when it merged with Saul, Ewing, Remick and Saul, specializing in estates and trusts. As noted by the Philadelphia Inquirer, he was “one of the great joiners of organizations” and “[b]y his own count, Mr. Gold belonged to more than 70 that reflected his military interests, his cultural activities, and an ancestry he could date to before the colonial era.” Of special significance is his service to the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania as President from 1984 to 1986. He was married to the former Maijorie Foerderer Tonner for more than 56 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Katharine O. Sommerfield, Marjorie G. Angelo, and Caroline G. Hart, and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Communion in Philadelphia, with burial in the General Doyle Military Cemetery in New Egypt, New Jersey. 373
