CHWING OF YORK COUN1Y FROM BISCHWEILER IN 1750 AND 1765 3 ovember J 750 on the Brotherhood Michael hwing (on board) brother Samuel Shwing (mark) SaJome Schwing, possibly this ship 1 19 eptember 1765 on the BetseyAbram Schming [sic] (mark) wife Anna Margaret (Gutig) Brothers Michael and amuel Shwing migrat d on the Brotherhood with Pierre and Isaac Pari . amuel igned with a mark; Michael did not ign because he was on board (possibly sick). It is likely that their sister alome came with them. It is through her records that the some of the first connections to Bischweiler were spotted. Their youngest brother, Abraham, married in 1763 in Bischweiler. He likely had remained at home with their parents, emigrating after the birth of his first child. The Schwing origin in Europe i found in Lebenslaufen [life tOrie5] in York County: [Chti t EvangeJical Lutheran] Jacob Rummel, son of the late Jacob, was bom September 6, 1726 in Klerburg, in the High Bailiwick of Bcrg1.2bern, in the duchy of Deux Ponts, in the P-alantinate. He married ApriJ 8, 1749 to atom Schwinck 1 daughter of Martin hwinck of BuschweHer in Alsace. Jn the same year he travelled to Pennsylvania as a carpenter. He had 5 children, all living. He died at 10 A.M-,May 4, 1759, i.n York, and was buried in the Reformed churchyacd.3 [First Moravian] September 7, 1792. Died John George Gump 1 aet. 82-11-0, married, born O tobct 9, 1709 near Heils in Swabia; married 1731 Ro ina Mack; God blessed this marriage with ten children, of whom 5 survive. In 1732 he came to Ameri a, and liv d first in Lancaster County, then in Maryland, where he joined the Moravian Church. in 1762 they moved to Yorktown, where hi wife died in 1769. In 1770 he married secondly, the widow Salome Rumel, who survives; this marriage of 22 years was bl.essed with a daughter, who did not however survive. 4 See introductory material in ..Connection between Bischwciler, Alsace and America in the 1700 ," PGM 44:12-21, for more information on methods and sour 1 Strassburgcr and Hinke, Pennsylvania G-erman Pioneers, 1:447; 2:521; U 2 tr25 burger and Hlnke, Pennsylvania German Pioneers, 1:706; 2:808; Li 3 Wright, York County Church Records, 2:282. 4 Wright, York County Church Records, 2:10. 70 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol 44 (2005) 2005 Schwing 71 [First Moravian] September 20, 1793. Died the widow Salome Gump, (nee Schwing), born November 27, 1722 at Bischweiler in Alsace; came in 1749 to Pennsylvania, and at once to York. Later in the same year she married Jacob Rummel; they had a son (who died) and 4 daughters; through the daughters she leaves 20 grandchildren. In 1759 she became a widow, and married in 1770 George Gump, after they became members of our church. They had one daughter (who died), and the husband died September 7, 1792, so she was again a widow.5 [First Moravian] George Gump of Yorktown, born October 9, 1709 at Hi.iffenhardt, 4 miles from Heilbrunn; Lutheran; came to America 1732, settled in Cocalico, near Ephrata; then moved to Maryland where he learned to know the Moravians through the sainted Brother Hertzer; joined November 23, 1749, at the first Synod of Warwick; ... Moved to York June 20, 1762; died September 7, 1792. Married (1) 1731 Rosina - (born June 24, 1705 in the Imperial Free City of Wimpfen, died June 6, 1769); married (2) the widow Salome Rummel, on July 16, 1770 (died September 20, 1793). 6 There are chronological oddities. A marriage date of 8 April 17 49 in Pennsylvania is given for Salome Schwing and Jacob Rummel. It would seem more reasonable that either they married in Europe (although no marriage was found in Bischweiler) or that Salome came 3 November 1750 with her brothers Michael and Samuel. There are two arrivals for Jacob Rummel-13 September 1749 on the Christian with many immigrants from Bischweiler and on 30 November 1750 on the Sandwich with a Jorg Fillips Rumel. There are also two departures for Jacob that match these. In 1749 it was noted that "Johann Jakob Rummel of Cleeburg leaves for America," and again in 1750 that "Johan Jacob Rummel of Cleeburg, his wife and one child leave for America." 7 Whether or not this is the same person has not been determined. GENEALOGICALSUMMARY A baptism at the French Reformed Church at Bischweiler for a family with unfamiliar surnames offers a clue to further information on the Schwing family that might offer possibilities for research by descendants. On 30 December 1708, Anne Marie, daughter of Paul Arnott, butcher, Lutheran resident of Bischweiler, and the French Pache: Neele was baptized. One of the parrains was identified as Jean Martin Schweing (son of Madame Prenge). 8 1. MICHAEL ScHWI G (Martin\ 8 was born in 1722 (catechumen notation). Michael Swing of York Town Township died between 12 May 1781 (will) and 2 January 1782 (probate). His will named children George, Michael, and Margar t wife of Lawrence Ettare [EnerJ} Five Generations of the Swing Family mistakenly claims that the immigrant is the Michael Swyng/Swinte, age 40, who arrived on the Marlborough on 23 September 1741 and that the age is wrong.35 Given the age discrepancy, the arrival of Michael with Samuel in 1750 and the fact that no other Bischweilers were on the earlier list points to this being a different man. That they definitely were different men is shown by Michael chwing's catechism. He was a catechumen at Easter 1738, signing with his MS mark.3 6 The passenger on the Marlborough also signed with an MS ( or possibly just an M), but the marks could not have been more different, one very simple, the other very ornate. Michael moved within Pennsylvania between 1756, when he was taxed as a shoemaker in High Street Ward, Philadelphia,3 7 and 1758, when he had a child baptized in York County. He married by 1752 ANNAMARGRETHA KLINGEL, whose maiden name is gi en in the baptism of his fourth child in York County. Five Generations of the Swing Family states that his wife was Anna Margaretta Parris. 38 There is a Margarette born in 1721, sister of the immigrant Peter Pari , for whom there is no further information on either Poulet's chart or the Stammtafel; this would seem reasonable because of the sponsorships for this first three children. Given the five-year gap between the third and fourth children, it would have been possible for him to ha e two wives named Anna Margretha. However, the baptism of his second child, in which he and Peter and Anna Maria Paris are all caUed Re.formed peaks against this. Clearly it is the wife Anna Margretha who was Lutheran. The daughter of Peter and Anna Maria Paris would have been Reformed. He may have married again, between the sixth and se enth Martin ) 32 £glise Reformi.e FranfQise de Bischwi/Jer, Baptemes 1722-175 l, 1269, Franf(lise de Bisch willer, Sipultures 1688-1750, unpagina.tcd. 4 Will of Michael Swing. executors Killian Small and Jacob Welshantz.
