Pennsylvania Box-holders of the Safe Deposit Company of New York KENNETH Scarr A T THE Annual Meeting of the Genealogical Society on 23 March 1971, Dr. Kenneth Scott of the Department of History, Queens College of the City University of New York, discussed the unique genealogical and personal information entered in the early ledgers of the Safe Deposit Company of New York. The following list of box-holders who either were born in Pennsylvania or who had Pennsylvania connections has been culled from those records i by Dr. Scott. It is of much interest since the physical descriptions given in the entries of these nineteenth and early twentieth century depositors furnish specific data otherwise unknown or forgotten. The information serves to put "flesh on the bones" of ancestors of whom perhaps little is known other than mere vital statistics. The Safe Deposit Company, brain child of one Francis Jenks, was chartered by the New York legislature in April, 1861, but did not become a reality until after the Civil War was over in 1865. The vaults were first housed in a portion of a "fire proof" building on Broadway near Wall Street. These rented premises to some extent resembled a private club; there was a well-stocked library and several parlors were available for meetings. Mail addressed to box-holders could be addressed there. Ladies were "segregated" and maid service was provided for them. In 1908 the company moved to the Singer Building where it is still in business and has maintained the enviable reputation of never having been burglarized nor visited by fire.' In the subjoined list the name of the depositor is followed by the date, in parentheses, when the box was rented.
