DAVID MEREDITH OF RADNOR, CHESTER COUNTY, AND OF PLYMOUTH, PHILADELPHIA COUNTY, PENNA. AND HIS STEP-CHILDREN SURNAMED MOORE By LEWIS D. Coors, F.A.S.G., F.G.S.P. An unsuspecting reading of the words "David Meredith of ye parish of Llanbister in the county of Radnorshire, weaver, and Kathrine his wife with their five children namely Richard, Mary, John, Meredith, and Sarah," in the certificate of removal received and recorded by Radnor Monthly Meeting, Chester County, Penna., has provided the following two erroneous notices. That the first three listed children were in fact the emigrant David Meredith's stepchildren, surnamed Moore, is obvious from other relevant records cited hereinafter. MERIDITH, DAVID, came from the parish of Llanbister, Radnorshire, Wales, in 1683 or 1684, and settled in Radnor township. .. . He was accompanied to this country by his wife Katharine and their five children—Richard, Mary, John, Meridith and Sarah. Katharine died in 1688 and in 1690 he was married to Mary Jones, a widow, of Upper Providence, as his second wife, by whom he probably bud no children.... The time of Isis decease is not known; but from the circumstance of his name disappearing from the minutes of his meeting in 1695 (sic), it is supposed that it occurred about that period. He had sufferred imprisonment in Wales on account of his religious principles.—George B. Smith, History of Delaware County, Penna., 1862, p 485. DAVID MEREDITH, of the parish of Llanbister, county of Radnor, removed to Radnor, Penna., 1683. A Friend. Freeholder of 250 acres of land in Radnor, and elsewhere. "Wife, Katherine. Children (surnamed Meredith): I. Richard; 2. Mary; 3. John; 4. Meredith; 5. Sarah (born in Wales.)—Thomas A. Glenn, Welsh Founders of Penna., 1911, vol. 1, 193. DAVID MEREDITH, of the parish of Llanbister, in Radnorshire, Wales, weaver, purchased from Richard Davies of Welchpoole, in Montgomeryshire, gent., by Deed of 20 June 1682, a tract of 100 acres to be laid out in the Province of Pennsylvania. He was described as having been a member of the religious Society of Friends for the last twenty years and more in the certificate given him on 20th of 5th month ( July) 1683 by Radnorshire Friends for his removal to Pennsylvania. He was probably the David Meredith of Radnorshire who, with one Richard Moore and eight other Friends, was fined in 1659 for "absence from the National Worship; " and the same two who were listed among 23 Friends corn- 217 218 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine mitted to prison in 1664 "until they should take the oath of allegiance." It is impossible here to report definitely that David Meredith's wife KATHERINE MOORE, who arrived in Radnor Township, Chester County, Penna., with him, formerly a widow Moore as hereinafter appears, had been the widow of Richard Moore abovesaid. 8 By Deed of 20 June 1682, Richard Davies of Welchpoole, Co. Montgomery, (Wales), Gent., conveyed to David Meredith of the pansh of Llanbister, Co. Radnor, (Wales), weaver, for 2 Pounds sterling, and an annual quitrent of 1 shilling to be paid to William Penn, the Proprietary, a tract of 100 acres to be laid out in the Province of Pennsylvania. Recorded 16-12-1683/4 in Phila. Deed Book C - 1, page 73, whence this abstract. Radnor Shir. At or mens meeting ye 20th of ye 5th month 1683.
