EDITOR’S NOTES LOOKING ELSEWHERE T he answers we seek frequently show up in places far afield or unex¬ pected, as shown in this issue. Correctly identifying the relationships among and English origins of the Blights of Philadelphia required con¬ necting a manumission from the Pennsylvania Abolition Society with wills from New Jersey and Jamaica. The latter pointed to the Devon par¬ ish registers that would delineate the family. A western Pennsylvania woman on the edge of the frontier is identified in her son’s Michigan marriage record, which points, indirectly, to her father’s will in Indiana Territory. The life of Richard Allen, first Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, was summarized in Volume 46 (Spring/Summer 2010). His two wives and six children have long been identified, but the article in this issue provides both greater detail and more descendants, using in part a set of court records from Texas. If your ancestor left no journal, look for someone else’s in a nearby place and time. Benjamin Sayre’s account book of the activities of one Susquehanna County farm sheds light on the day-to-day lives of many rural, mid-nineteenth-century Pennsylvanians. Newspaper items from Dauphin County are not county exclusive; they also cover people in Berks, Cumberland, Franklin, Lancaster, Northumberland, York, and other counties. European origins are given for some of its subjects. And three family records illustrate the wealth of information from across the state lying unexamined in GSP’s little-used Bible Record Collection. Some passes granted for the return of Civil War bodies to their Penn¬ sylvania homes were created in Washington, D.C., and later archived in New York City, where they remain today. Abstracts of these passes bring valuable genealogical data back home. Elk County marriages (somewhat hidden within microfilm of Elk County wills) give origins and more for people in a time and place of migrational flux. The gap between the 1880 and 1900 censuses is partially bridged for one Berks County township with a single, tiny notebook containing an 1891 dog tax list. Keep an eye on GSP’s website (www.genpa.org). In collaboration with the New England Historic Genealogical Society, GSP is releasing back issues of PGM among its members-only, searchable databases. Beginning with the first issue in 1895, five volumes will be added every several weeks. Thousands of your ancestors are waiting to be found there.
