Genealogical Gleanings from the Whitman Sampler Collection Compiled by MRS. A. DOUGLAS OLIVER and MRS. CHARLES B. BARCLAY MERICANS have long been familiar with the Sampler box of the Whitman Chocolate Company, first introduced in 1912. The design of the box was based on authentic sampler motifs, and reflected the interest in samplers by the family of the president of Whitman. This interest ultimately led to the collection of 578 samplers by the Company. They date from 1662 to the 20th century, and are of American, English and European origin. The collection was presented to the Philadelphia Museum of Art by Whitman's Chocolate Division of Pet, Inc., in 1969. According to the Webster's Dictionary, the word "sampler" is derived from the Latin root meaning "example." Originally, it was a piece of needlework made to preserve a pattern or patterns; later, it was made as a sample of skill, especially to show embroidered letters or verses — usually on a background of linen or canvas. Samplers achieved their geeatest popularity from about 1790 to the Civil War period; they were often worked by younger children up to their early teens as "lesson books," and were signed and dated upon completion. Many samplers provide information of genealogical value, such as the age of the child completing the work and, in some instances, family records listing the names of parents, brothers and sisters, and dates of births, marriages and deaths. Through the courtesy of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the records here presented are copied from those samplers giving information of genealogical interest. Idiosyncracies of spelling, capitalization, punctuation and spacing are retained to help give some of the flavor of the originals. Catalog numbers are given for the samplers in the Museum Collection; also included.
