Hatton was bom in Philadelphia April 6th Eighteen hundred and Thirty-one. Hugh Hatton was born in Philadelphia December 6th 1832. Research in various Philadelphia records confirm that several of the individuals mentioned in the Hatton (Lamon) Bible were Philadelphia residents. Living in Kensington when the 1850 census was taken were Robert Lemmen (sir), age 46, a watchman born in Ireland, and Elizabeth Lem- The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine 371 men, age 49, also born in Ireland. Completing the household was Thomas, age 19, who drove a wagon and was bom in Pennsylvania.2 Eliza Hatton was buried at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Philadelphia on 29 March 1854, At the time of her death she was in her 55th year. Rela¬ tives and friends from Hope Union No. 43, Wreath of Friendship En¬ campment and Miriam Grove No. 1 were invited to attend the funeral from her late residence on Wistar above George.® Robert Lamon died of cholera in Philadelphia on 1 July 1855 at the age of 52 and was buried in the Franklin CBC Cemetery.* Thomas Hatton and Catherine [ ? ] were married about 1853 and in 1860 were living in Philadelphia with their three young sons: Albert, age 6; Hugh, age 5; and John, age 10 months. Thomas, age 29, was a salesman and no occupation was listed for Catherine, age 24.® Unmar¬ ried in 1860, Hugh Hatton was working as a blacksmith and living in the same neighborhood as his brother Robert.® On 23 July 1861 Thomas was mustered into Company D of Pennsyl¬ vania’s 82nd Regiment, enlisting at Philadelphia for three years. The unit arrived at the James River in Virginia on 30 June 1862 and spent the next morning behind a rail fence under severe shelling. That after¬ noon the unit was ordered to advance across a field, again under heavy artillery fire. When the enemy fire finally slackened late in the evening, the unit joined the retreat to Harrison’s Landing. Regimental losses at what was called the Battle of Malvern Hill were severe. Thomas, by then a sergeant, died on 5 July 1862 of wound received 1 July/ —— Lemmen household, 1850 census, population schedule, Philadelphia County, Pa., Kensington, 2nd Ward, page 111, dwelling 821, family 949, taken 10 August 1850; National Archives micropublication M432, roll 806. 3 Public Ledger , Philadelphia, Pa., Wednesday, 29 March 1854, page 2, column 3. 4WPA Index to Cemetery Returns, City of Philadelphia. Two children five-year-old Kate and nine-year-old Tho¬ mas were born in the last decade. Also in the household were Hugh, age 13, and John, age 11,8 By 1880 these children were still members of the Hugh-Catherine household. They had been joined by H. Andrew, age 7; W, George, age 4; and M. Eliza, age 1. All were identified as sons or daughters of Hugh and Catherine.9 — Comments Sometimes our research seems to raise more questions than it an¬ swers. Such is the case with the study thus far of the individuals named in the Hatton (Lamon) Bible. Eliza Hatton, who was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery, is of the correct age to be Eliza Lamon of the Bible. But what happened to Robert Lamon who was born in 1803? Was he the same person who was buried in Franklin Cemetery in 1855? Again the ages agree. When did Eliza’s surname become Hatton rather than Lamon? Records for the younger generation are also puzzling. Both Thomas and Hugh Hatton appear to have married women named Catherine or Kate or perhaps Hugh married his brother’s widow. She may be the Catherine Ann Hatton identified in the Bible. The older children in Hugh’s 1870 household 13-year-old Hugh and 11-year-old John ap¬ pear to be the same children found in Thomas’s 1860 family. They are still with Hugh and Catherine in 1880. — — — With a city as rich in records as Philadelphia is, the answers to these questions and any other raised by the Bible record, are probably avail¬ able for the price of some time and research. If a descendant solves more puzzles of the Hatton/ Lamon past, we hope the answers will be shared with GSP. ®Hugh Hatton household, 1870 census, population schedule, first enumeration, Phila¬ delphia County, Pa., Ward 17, 57th district, dwelling 7751, family 981, page 61, dated 29 June 1870, NARA M593, roll 1402. nugh Hatton soundex entry for 1880 census, code H350, Pennsylvania; NARAT769, roll 6$.
