In Memoriam Madeline Taws Howland i T IS WITH DEEP REGRET that we announce the death of Madeline Taws Howland, Honorary Vice President of this Soci¬ ety, on 16 April 1995. A friend and officer of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania for many years, Madeline was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, the daugh¬ ter of Florence Moore Halberstadt and George Ellis. After graduating from the Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, she worked for several years sketching fashion illustrations. In 1939 she married Charles Berry Howland, an attorney practicing in Philadelphia. During World War II, while her husband served in the U.S. Navy, she applied her illustrating skills to the war effort. After completing courses in electrical circuitry and mechanical drafting at Dobbins Vocational School in Philadelphia in 1943, she worked at the Phila¬ delphia Naval Shipyard preparing blueprints for various naval vessels. In addition, her redesign of the parachute hook was incorporated into parachutes that were used during the final years of the war. After the death of her husband in 1969, Madeline turned her life¬ time hobby of genealogy into a profession. She served for many years as the genealogist for the Welcome Society of Pennsylvania, checking lineage papers of applicants on behalf of other hereditary societies. She was an acknowledged expert on local Quaker genealogy, a subject about which she had an extensive research collection. Madeline was a member of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. She is survived by her son Charles, an attorney in Philadelphia; her daugh¬ ter, Anne Howland Schotter; several grandchildren; and her uncle, Captain Robert L. Halberstadt Madeline is remembered fondly by her many friends for her keen sense of humor, for the pride she took in the rigorous standards of scholarship that she applied to all her research activities, as well as for her sage advice. 107 108 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine F.
