Burials, St. Peter’s Church, Seemsville, Pennsylvania A N 18 FEBRUARY 1776 in Seemsville, Northampton Co., Pa., an article of agreement” for the purpose of building a school house (written in German) was signed. This school was “erected along the left side of the Bath to Seemsville road, near the fork road leading to the Miller slate quarry, on what was then proprietary land. It was called ‘Oxford. In other communities churches have preceded schools. Here the school had come before the church. . . . The people of the community were not satisfied with only a secular education for their children, they also desired a religious one.2 Church services were conducted in the school building for the first time in 1864. Neighboring Lutheran and Reformed pastors conducted Sunday services in the afternoon, alternately every second week. The Lutheran services were in charge of Rev. Kuntz. Reformed services were conducted by Rev. Lisabreger and Rev. Kondenbein. . . . 3 In 1868 the first church officers were elected. f — — Editor’s note: This list of burials Nov. 1874 to Apr. 1924 for St. Peter’s Evangelical and Reformed (“Snyder’s”) Church Cemetery, Seemsville, Pa., is a significant “find”! GSP is the only known genealogical society to hold an original published copy of the History of St. Peter’s Church and Record of Burials (available in the GSP reading room). Previously available church documents containing St. Peter's subscribers, communicants, baptisms (1876—1920), and marriages (1877-1912) are available and can be obtained from the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, (Film 1671320, item 5, identified as “microfilm of original records, Gen. Soc. of Pa. XChl2”) or from the library of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (microfilm no. XCh 412). Neither library holds the record of burials. 1 Rev. George J. Laubach, Harvey T. Koch, and Thomas Steward, History of St. Peter’s Church and Record of Burials: A Brief Sketch of the Principal Events of St. Peter’s Church, Seemsville, Pa., together with A Burial Record From 1874 to 1924 (n.p., 1924), 3. Hereafter cited as History of St. Peter’s. 2 History of St. Peter's, 4. 3 History of St. Peter’s, 4. 120 Burials, St Peter's Church, Seemsville, Pennsylvania 121 On 8 October 1873 members of St Peter’s Church (also called “Sny¬ der’s Church” because the school later the church was built on 11 acres of land originally warranted tojohannas Schnyder [John Snyder] ) » 4 considered the “possibility of erecting a new church building At a congregational meeting held on July 6, 1874, a Christian name for the church was decided on. The majority of the members present were in favor of the name ‘Snact [s?c] Petrus’ (Saint Peter), which name was accordingly adopted. The old school building was leveled to the ground and the foundation walls of the church were soon constructed. The cornerstone was laid with appropriate services on August 2, 1874. Rev. Robert Lisberger from Bushkill Centre, preached the sermon at the morning servcie [sic)- Rev. Kistler from Cherryville, was the speaker at the afternoon service. The choir from St. John’s Church, Howertown, under the lead¬ ership of Jonas Landes, led the singing. The collections for the day amounted to two hundred seventy-eight dollars and thirty-nine cents ($278.39). The following articles were placed in the cornerstone: a copy of the Holy Bible, a Luthrean [sic] hymn book, a Reformed hymn book, a copy of Luther’s catechism, a German Reformed catechism, a copy of the (Lutheran) Zeitschrift, a copy of the (Reformed) Hausfreund, a Lutheran almanac of 1874, and a list of church officers. . . . In June of the following year, the building of the church was completed. The approximate cost of the church including the furnishings was six thousand seven hundred five dollars and nine cents ($6,705.09), The church was formally dedicated to the worship of the Triune God on June 6, 1875. Services were conducted morn¬ ing, afternoon and evening. The following ministers were present and took part in the services: Revs. Lisberger and Kramlich (pastors); Horn, principal of the Keystone Normal School (Kutztown); Loos, from Bethlehem; and Kuntz, from Nazareth. — 4 History of St Peter's , 4. 5 History of St, Peter’s, 6-7. — 122 The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Earlier, by congregational vote on 21 December 1874, it had been decided that a cemetery should be located south of the church. Plots ‘‘thirty-three feet square” were laid out, with the provision that “each plot should be divided in four equal lots. The lots were to be sold for five dollars ($5), or twenty dollars ($20) for a plot.”6 On 8 September 1901 the price of lots was increased to $12 for church members and to $25 for non-church members; beginning in 1924, the year this list of burials was published, the price of lots was raised to $25 for church members and to $55 for non-church members.7 A list of the names of those buried in the cemetery is appended. Mr. Harvey Koch and Mr, Samuel Landis, who have prepared this list, have examined every tombstone in this cemetery and believe that the list is a true and correct record as near as could be ascertained.8 NAME BORN DIED Allen, Howard An try, Raymond Sep, 23, 1854 Aug. 23, 1914 Antry, James G.
