I would be willing to make compensation for definite information Mrs Percy A Bethea, Darlington, South Carolina . . . . . STEWAET-PEDAN. GEORGE MAIN'S claim in the Pension. Office at Washington, filed in 1818 and allowed, contains information that he was born about 1748 and that his wife, Mary, was born about 1758 : Enlisted in 1777 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania in Capt. Henry Heath ’s Company of Winchester, Virginia, and served in the Eighth, Ninth and Thirteenth regiments under Col John Gibeon, Col Russell and Gen, Hand ; was in battle of Big Beaver against the Indian and in other skirmishes ; was wounded at Deer Lick, was discharged in 1780, at Pittsburgh, after 3 years and 14 days service Virginia Continental Line. Was placed on pension roll in 1828 at the age of 84, and died in 1833 in Bracken County, Kentucky His wife died in 1835. The War Dept , records show George Mains as in Capt Heath 's Independent Company of Virginia stationed at Fort Pitt 1777 and 1778. The United States Census of 1790 shows George Mains in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, in Georges Township The Fayette County records do not appear to show any information as to him The records of Brachen County, Kentucky, show that he acquired land there in 1802, was a property owner during his life, and more or less as to his family of sons and daughters Among the German Emigrants who arrived at Philadelphia about 1740 to 1750 and ascended the Delaware and settled in the Paulins Kill Valley in Sussex County, New Jersey, a part of which is now Warren County, were the Shafers, Wintermutes, Mains and others Some of these Germans apparently located in parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia where the name Mains is not uncommon in later periods The George Mains referred to may have been of this family of Mains Any information as to his ancestors will be appreciated by William A. Therefore this may inform thee & Frds whom It may concern the sd Wm Smith is a son of Jos 'h and Margaret Smith who have been and are in unity and good esteem amongst us and their sd son was educated under their care till he was about 8 years old, when his Uncle Wm Smith of London took him under his care and put him to business as he became fit for it in which he became very active when but young and acquitted himself to his Uncles satisfaction for sometime, but throTi unwatchfulness he afterward fell into unsuitable Company, which led him astray to such a degree, that his Uncle discharged him when he came down here & staid some months, but no suitable employment falling out for him here he returned to London & from thence transplanted him to you, since which hi3 Parents have repeatedly wrote him requesting that in case of his having left any debts which he contracted in London undischarged that he would as soon as it was in his power not fail to pay them, as they were not in circumstances to do it for him, whether our Friends of London ever dealt with him, in a church capacity for his misconduct we cannot say, but doubtless his Uncle would in his private capacity labour with him before he turned him off Thus dear Friend we have given the best & clearest acct we can of the young man & his conduct which if it is of any service in the affair the end will be answered.
