Inscriptions from Blockley Baptist Cemetery, Fifty-Third Street and Wyalusing Avenue, Philadelphia

INSCRIPTIONS FROM BLOCKLEY BAPTIST CEMETERY, FIFTY-THIRD STREET AND WYALUSING AVENUE, PHILADELPHIA. COLLECTED AND CONTRIBUTED BY CHARLES R . BARKER P [ On February 22, 1804, a number of persons, “ inhabitants of the township of Blockley ”, met in a school -house at 52 nd and Walnut streets, where some of them had previously been worshipping, and resolved to secure a lot, and build thereon a meeting- house, to be known as ( t the Baptist Church of Blockley, in the county of Philadelphia. ” On the 29th of May following, the sixteen constituent members met at the house of John Rutter, and organized a regular Baptist Church , call ing Mr. Rutter as pastor. The recognition services were held June 3, 1804, when Revs. Samuel Jones, 'William White and William Rodgers assisted, and Mr. Rutter was received as pastor. Joseph Price, of Lowrer Merion, notes in his diary that, on this date, he attended a Baptist meeting at ” Worrel ’s School house on Marshal Road ” where they constituted, with “ a Great deal of Cerimony ’ a new church * * that is to be built on Supplee ’s laud. > > The gift thus foreshadowed, was made OTL June 25th, when John Supplee gave one acre of land to ‘ the Blockley Baptist Church. ’ ' A one -story building was at once begun, whieb was completed the same year . Joseph Price, under date of September 14th, records the fact that he attended ‘‘ Baptist Meeting at Supplee ’s. ” The meetinghouse stood in the midst of farms, and the main approach was probably by way of wliat was later opened as Meeting House lane, following the present course of 52 nd street, from Lancaster avenue to Girard avenue, whence a short diagonal course, still in use, led to the church property. It is understood that the private burying -ground of the Supplee family, donors of the church land, formed the nucleus of the Blockley Baptist Cemetery. September 21st, 1805, Joseph Price records, 1 old John Supplee of Blockley Buried this afternoon about 70, I should think . , he Left a good Estate amongst 5 Children. ” A number of Supplee tombstones have escaped destruction by removal, but the remainder are lost. Mr. S. L. Frankenfield, the veteran undertaker , recalls that three persons of the name of Benjamin Supplee were here interred side by side, representing three generations in direct line. Another early burial was that of 1 1 Old Henry Helmbold, Right & good man ”, to quote again from the Price diary, who died at Marshall ’s mill, formerly Sellers ’s, and ’was buried, November 24 th , 1809, “ at Baptist Meeting at Supplee 's ” By the opening of the mills, particularly Eubank ’s brocade mills, on nearby Mill creek, many English weavers were brought to the neighbor hood , and in duo time a number of these, as their tombstone inscriptions testify, were interred in the Blockley Cemetery.* . Fran ken fie Id Sons, undertakers, eatabl ished SO years ( 279 ) 1929 Copyright The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania PGM Vol X No.3 Inscriptions from Blockley Baptist Cemetery , 280 Originally, Blockley Baptist CemeteTy extended somewhat beyond its present bounds, but the opening of adjoining streets forced the removal of many bodies to other parts of the cemetery, which, with the passage of time and the change of surroundings, gradually suffered a decline Some years since, agitation was begun for its abolition. Following this, there was a large number of removals from individual lots to other . cemeteries.* Meantime, the old cemetery had fallen into shocking neglect In July, 1923, it was finally condemned as a nuisance, and closed, by order of the Board of Health ; and in 1924, Blockley Baptist Church arranged to remove all remains from its cemetery to Mt Zion Cemetery, in Delaware county. In October of this year the work of destruction began . . . Nearly all the tombstones, being of marble, and therefore not acceptable to Mt Zion Cemetery, were destroyed, thus entailing the loss, in many cases, of the only burial record possessed by the church.
