In Memoriam Walter Lee Sheppard Jr., FGSP, FASG I T IS WITH DEEP REGRET that we announce the death of Walter Lee Sheppard Jr., a member of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania since 1952 and named a GSP Fellow in 1964. Born 23June 1911 in Philadelphia, he was the son of Walter Lee, Sr., and Martha Houston (Evans) Sheppard. The Germantown Friends School pro¬ vided his primary education, and he graduated from Germantown Academy in 1928. Higher degrees were earned at Cornell University (B.S., 1932) and the University of Pennsylvania (M.S., 1933). Sheppard was a chemical engineer engaged in the manufacture and sale of acid and alkali-proof cements, linings, coatings, and pipe joint materials. He served in the U.S. Army from April 1941 to August 1945 as a captain in the field artillery. Although by vocation a chemical engineer, Sheppard enjoyed a lifelong passion for genealogy. His many published articles attest to his genealogical expertise. Quoting from papers submitted for his nomination as GSP Fellow: His first article appeared in 1938, when he was 27 years old, and ... he has become one of our prolific writers. Unlike so many who pursue genealogy as a hobby, he does not accept the fabulous claims that have found their way into print He insists upon docu¬ mentation for his statements, and, when he finds errors in his pub¬ lished pieces ... he promptly writes corrective articles or notes. Sheppard was a contributing editor for The American Genealogist and a frequent contributor to the Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, the National Genealogical Society Quarterly and the New England Historical and Genealogical Record, among others. He was a member of numerous genealogical societies and a Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists. Walter Lee SheppardJr., was married twice; both wives predeceased him. His second wife of 43 years, Boudinot Atterbury Oberge Kendall Sheppard, died in 1996. He is survived by two stepsons, Charles H. Kendall Jr., and »ÿ John A. Kendall. 382
