The German Origins of George Felty (Hans Jerg Veltin) of Lebanon County Part II: Maternal Ancestry

THE GERMAN ORIGINS OF GEORGE FELTY (HANS JERG VELTIN) OF LEBANON COUNTY by Clifford L. Stott, AG, CG, FASG* PART II: MATERNAL ANCESTRY1 T he October 2011 edition of this journal included the German origins and paternal ancestry of George Felty (Hans Jerg Veltin) of Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, an immigrant from Ofterdingen, Württemberg. The present article traces the ancestry of George Felty’s mother, Catharina Wagner of Ofterdingen, including the families of Wagner, Fells, Biner (two lines), Sultz, and Speidel. All of these families resided in Ofterdingen and nearby Nehren, Württemberg. WAGNER FAMILY OF OFTERDINGEN, WÜRTTEMBERG 1. FABIANE WAGNER was born say 1535. He married first say 1560 (first child baptized 1561) ANNA STANGERS, who died before 12 August 1565, when Fabian Wagner had a child by his second wife. He married second in 1564–65 AGNES MÄYER, who died before 18 May 1567, when Fabian Wagner had a child by his third wife. Jacob married 13 November 1639 in Ofterdingen MARINA FELLS, who was baptized in Ofterdingen 11 June 1614, the daughter of Melchior Fells and his wife Anna. Marina died in November or December 1676. 5 Jacob Wagner was called a manufacturer on his marriage record and a 3 Gender of this unnamed child is not stated. 4 There were three different men named Basti Wagner having children in Ofterdingen about the same time. To distinguish them, the parish clerk used identifiers such as “the young” or “the old.” In the case of the ancestral Basti Wagner, he is referred to as Fabian’s son, although typically in a very abbreviated form, such as “Fab:.” Because of these details, it is possible to separate the families of the three Basti Wagners. Basti is a diminutive form of Sebastian and Bastian, but Basti was rarely known by these names. 5 Exact date unclear because of illegible handwriting. 2014 German Origins of George Felty: Maternal Line 51 day laborer on the marriage record of his son Melchior. ANNA WAGNER, baptized 1 July 1642 in Ofterdingen; died there 11 January 1644. iii. ANNA WAGNER, baptized 8 December 1644 in Ofterdingen; died there 11 April 1647. iv. CATHARINA WAGNER, baptized 20 February 1647 in Tübingen, Württemberg.6 v. CATHARINA WAGNER, baptized 1649 in Ofterdingen; married 1 November 1670 in Ofterdingen HANS JACOB WEILDEN, son of Hans Weidlen. vi. PETER WAGNER, baptized 21 August 1651 in Ofterdingen; died there 25 February 1653. vii. APPOLONIA WAGNER, baptized 1 June 1654 in Ofterdingen; died there 30 April 1679. 4 viii. MELCHIOR WAGNER, baptized 25 May 1659 in Ofterdingen; married 19 August 1690 in Ofterdingen AGNES SCHMID. 4. JERGB WAGNER (JacobC, BastiD, FabianE) was baptized in Ofterdingen 7 December 1656. He died there 4 December 1731, age 76, from complications of falling out of a tree at some earlier time. Jerg married first 30 November 1678 in Ofterdingen MARGARETHA BINER. She was baptized 12 July 1656 in Nehren, Württemberg, the daughter of Hans Biner and Maria “Mareile” Sultz. Margaretha died 21 December 1703 in Ofterdingen at the age of 47½. For some infraction that could not be translated, she was denied burial in the Lutheran cemetery. Jerg married second 19 January 1705 in Ofterdingen BARBARA (ROOS) HAUSCH, widow of Jacob Hausch. Barbara, who was the daughter of “old” Michael Roos, married first 19 November 1695 in Ofterdingen Jacob Hausch. Parish records show that Jerg Wagner was a weaver and oil miller. Therefore, he was involved in spinning the oil out of flax. Children of JergB and Margaretha (Biner) Wagner: i. ANNA MARIA WAGNER, baptized 5 April 1679 in Ofterdingen; married there 21 January 1710 JACOB FAUSER, carpenter, son of 6 Evangelische Tübingen, Württemberg, kirchenbuch (FHL film #1,457,385). The baptism is also recorded in Ofterdingen on the same date with a reference to the event taking place in Tübingen with her father, Jacob Wagner, being a citizen of Ofterdingen. Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine 52 Vol. 49 Hans and Anna Maria Fauser. ii. HANS JERG WAGNER, born 16 September 1681 in Ofterdingen; baptized there 18 September 1681; died there 21 July 1762. He married 27 October 1704 in Ofterdingen ANNA MARIA HALDERMAN, daughter of Jerg Halderman. iii. MARGARETHA WAGNER, baptized 18 July 1683 in Ofterdingen; married 18 February 1715 in Bondorf, Württemberg, RHAMEY KUSSMAUL, son of Hans Michael Kussmaul.7 iv. CATHARINAA WAGNER, baptized 16 July 1685 in Ofterdingen; married 31 January 1713 in Ofterdingen JOHANNES VELTIN. They are the parents of Hans Jerg1 Veltin (George Felty), the Pennsylvania immigrant (see PGM, 47 [2011]:101–110). TWO BINER FAMILIES OF NEHREN, WÜRTTEMBERG8 Part 1: Ancestors of Margaretha Biner, wife of JergB Wagner 1. CONRAD BINER was born say 1526. He married first before 1559 CATHARINA KATZ, which is proved by the baptismal entry of their son Gall. No additional children of Conrad and Catharina (Katz) Biner were found. The register begins in 1559, so it is likely there were earlier children not of record. Conrad married second 14 November 1565 in Nehren ADELHEIT FAUSER, daughter of Michel Fauser.9 2 Child of Conrad and Catharina (Katz) Biner: i. GALL BINER, baptized 13 October 1559 in Nehren; married first 2 May 1593 in Nehren CATHARINA KEMLER; married second 16 May 1599 in Nehren AGNES BINER. Child of Conrad and Adelheit (Fauser) Biner: ii. JACOB BINER, baptized on 25 July 1568 in Nehren. 2. GALL BINER (Conrad) was baptized in Nehren 13 October 1559 and died there in 1634 (buried 25 August 1634). He married first 2 May 1593 in Nehren CATHARINA KEMLER, daughter of Conrad Kemler. She died 7 Bondorf, Württemberg, Evangelical parish register (FHL #1,475,161). The marriage was also recorded in Ofterdingen parish registers as having taken place in Bon- dorf. 8 The surname of this family has gone through many variations. The earliest known spelling was Bener. Other variants include Benner, Biner, Binner, Büner, and Bihner. The name has been standardized to Biner, the most common variant, in this narrative. 9 All references to events taking place in Nehren in this article were found in Evangelische Nehren, Württemberg, kirchenbuch (FHL #1,457,473). Gall married second 16 May 1599 in Nehren AGNES BINER, daughter of Conrad Biner (not to be confused with Gall’s father, also named Conrad Biner). Agnes was born about 1577. He died before 4 July 1662, when his wife died a widow. Nehren parish registers indicate he was a tailor. Hans married first 25 November 1628 in Nehren ANNA FAUSER, daughter of Bastle Fauser. She died 24 March 1643 in Nehren. He married second in 1643 [complete date unclear] in Nehren MARIA SULTZ, daughter of Jacob Sultz. TWO BINER FAMILIES OF NEHREN, WÜRTTEMBERG Part 2: Ancestors of Agnes Biner, wife of Gall Biner of Nehren CONRAD BINER was born about 1548, based on the age of 80 on his death record. He died on 17 January 1628 in Nehren, aged “over” 80 years. He married, probably about 1573 (first child baptized in 1574), AGNES BAUSINGER.12 She died 5 November 1611 in Nehren. No age is mentioned. Children of Conrad and Agnes (Bausinger) Biner: i. URSULA BINER, baptized 5 September 1574 in Nehren. ii. MAGDALENA BINER, baptized 6 January 1576 in Nehren. iii. AGNES BINER, baptized 21 April 1577 in Nehren; died 18 September 1650, age 73, in Nehren; married, as his second wife, 16 May 1599 in Nehren GALL BINER (see above). iv. HANS FELLS,14 born say 1556; married 4 October 1580 in Nehren MARAINE/MARINA SPEIDEL. ii. SEBASTIAN FELLS , baptized 8 March 1559 in Nehren. iii. MELCHOR FELLS, baptized 19 January 1561 in Nehren; died there 2 December 1603. iv. BARBLA FELLS, baptized 13 February 1563 in Nehren. v. CATHARINA FELLS , baptized 5 November 1564 in Nehren. vi. JACOB FELLS, baptized 21 February 1568 in Nehren; died there 13 December 1610. He married about 1599 (first child baptized in 1600) URSULA —. 2. MELCHIOR FELLS (Hans1, Hans2) was baptized 19 May 1591 in Nehren but was apparently raised in Ofterdingen, where his younger siblings were born. He was called deceased on his daughter Anna’s marriage record in 1639. Melchior married, perhaps about 1613, ANNA —. Child of Melchior and Anna (—) Fells: i. MARINA FELLS, baptized 11 June 1614 in Ofterdingen; married 13 November 1639 in Ofterdingen JACOBC WAGNER (see above). 14 It is believed that Hans is a son of Hans and Catharina Fells because there was no other Fells family evident in Nehren Protestant registers during this period. Moreover, Jacob Fells (bp. 1568), a proven son of Hans and Catharina, was a sponsor to the baptisms of some of the children of Hans Fells and Maraine Speidel. Both Jacob and Hans used the Fellin spelling of their surname. Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine 56 Vol. 49 SULTZ FAMILY OF NEHREN, WÜRTTEMBERG15 JACOB SULTZ was born say 1587, the son of Jacob Sultz, as indicated on his marriage record. He died in Nehren before the marriage of his daughter Mareile in 1643. Jacob married 17 February 1613 in Nehren GRETTA [MARGRETTA] KUELE, daughter of Martin Kuele. He married ANNA DREITWEIN, as declared on their children’s baptismal records. The baptismal entry for Albertus adds that his mother, Anna, is the daughter of Peter Dreitwein.16 Children of Caspar and Anna (Dreitwein) Speidel: i.
