CLARK. 2 §E £g * H P, Z •§ ori sa A i ■s [Inside of back cover] Jeffery Clark departed this life 19th of December [1812]. Hepparehia H. Clark. The following deductions were made after a careful study of the fore¬ going Bible record, the information supplied by Mrs. Frederick Black¬ burn, and certain public records : The Clark Bible was printed in one part by Isaac Collins, of Trenton, in 1790, and the other part by the same person in 1791. The book was bought in November, 1791, by Thomas Clark, son of Jeffery dark, the elder. About one month after the purchase, Thomas Clark had Squire James Matlack, who lived at Woodbury, New Jersey, 28 Bible Records. and was a well-known justice of the peace, transfer and attest the entries as to the children of Thomas Clark and Christian Yanneman, from an older Bible into this Bible. This deduction is drawn from the wording, which seems to be a certificate by Squire Matlaek that, he entered “ages of children from one other” (the word “Bible” could be here supplied and the meaning would be complete). This entry is dated De¬ cember 1791. The entry referring to the father and mother of Thomas Clark, Jeffery Clark the elder, and Mary his wife, was, in the original record very dim, and the one in regard to Mary shows no legible date on the same line. In consulting other records in this regard, it would seem that these en¬ tries might read: Jeffery Clark, father of Thomas, was born February . . . , and his , and Thomas was born the wife Mary Clark was born the 18 day of February 1737, for this latter date is the actual date of the birth of Thomas Clark. The above are the only references to the father and mother of Thomas Clark. The record begins with the dates of birth and death of Jeffery Clark, Jr.; the dates of birth of his wife, their marriage and the birth of their children. The entry of the marriage of Christian S. Clark by Squire James Matlack, is given as January 27, 1812. The records at Woodbury show that, Christian Clark was married to James Stephens on February 27, 1812, by James Matlaek. Following is a record of the marriage of Thomas Clark, son of Jeffery Clark the elder, and the date of the death of Thomas Clark, and the dates of the birth of their children. Subsequently there is an entry of the death of Jeffery Clark, Junior, and a reference in blank to Benjamin Weatherby, the father of Rachel Weatherby who was the wife of Jeffery Clark Jr. At the dose is another reference to the death of Jeffery Clark, Jr., and the entry of the name of one of his sons, Smith Clark, into whose posses¬ sion the Bible came after his father’s decease. Smith Clark was the father of Mrs. Frederick Blackburn, who now owns the Bible. At various places the name of Joseph Y. Clark, the youngest child of Jeffery Clark, Jr., is written, showing that the Bible may have been at one time in his possession also. Mrs. Blackburn states that, the initials which appear for middle names of the various persons, refer as follows: S, to the family name of ‘' Smith ’ ’. Rachel WeatheTby, the wife of Jeffery Clark, Junior, being the daughter of Benjamin Weatherby and Edith Smith, the said Edith Smith being the daughter of James Smith, who was the son of Jonathan Smith, son of John Smith of Smithfield, Salem County, New Jersey. V, refers to “Vanneman”. Christian Yanneman being the wife of Thomas Clark, the father of Jeffery Clark Jr. Christian Vanneman was the daughter of Garrett Vanneman and Christian Denney hie wife, said .... . Bible Records. 29 Garrett Vanneman being the son of John Yanneman of Gloucester County, New Jersey. The father of Mrs. Blackburn, viz., Smith Clark, was named, as he often told his daughter, 1 c Smith Clark” after the maiden name of his grandmother Edith Smith, the wife of Benjamin Weatherby. With regard to Christian Clark, who married James Stephens, she was called first ‘ Christy Ann, 1 1 and finally feminized it herself by signing it * * Christianna, ” as was often the case in those days. Her husband, James Stephens, later became known as James Beeves Stephens, the Beeves being the maiden name of his mother Sarah Beeves, who was the wife of James Stephens, the elder. The wills of James Beeves Stephens and Christianna Clark, his wife, are on file in the Register of Wills 9 Office at Philadelphia. ‘ BALL BIBLES. IN POSSESSION OF THOMAS HAND BALL.
