It may be of interest to many Pennsylvanians to know that, the descendants of Joseph Shippen, 1698/9-1741, son of Edward Shippen, the first Mayor of Philadelphia under William Penn's Charter of 1701, and the head of the government in Pennsylvania from May to December, 1703, are also descended from the Winthrops of Suffolk, Eng¬ land, of which family was John Winthrop, the eminent governor of Massachusetts, who in 1630 brought with him the first Charter for that Colony. Joseph Shippen married in Boston, Mass., 28 July, 1702, Abigail, dau. of Thomas s Crosse (Clement,2 Isaac *), by his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Nicholas and Hannah (Salter) Phillips, the latter of whom were mar- * Made mark. Some additional items on the Dungan Family by the late Hiram Corson, M.D., from the family papers of Emily Bitchie Perkins, formerly a life member of this Society. ii In the Winter of 1875-6, I called on the grand-daughter of THOMAS DUNGAN who formerly lived in Germantown and taught young men the languages, to see if her mother had left any record of the Dungan family. The grand-daughter above named, the only child of her mother living [1875-6] and the only grand-child of Thomas Dungan of German¬ town, is the wife of Dr W. W. Burnell, who resides at 1913 Green Street, Philadelphia. Mrs. Burnell hunted me up the old Bible, from which I copied the following written statement of births and deaths. The Preface of the Publishers runs thus : ‘The Holy Bible containing the old and new Testament, newly trans¬ lated and of the Original Tongue and with the former translations diligently compared and revised by his Majesty’s Special Command appointed to be read by Churches Printed by Boger Daniel, Printer to the University of Cambridge London. ’ On one of the blank leaves I found the following: 1. ‘Joshua Dungan was born March 3d about two o ’clock in the after¬ noon, in the year of Our Lord, 1745. ’ 2. ‘John Dungan was born the 10th day of March, at 10 o’clock at night, in the year of our Lord, 1741.’ 3. ‘Hannah Dungan was born Sept. 24th in the year of our Lord, 1749. ’ 4. ‘Thomas Dungan was born 16 day of March, 10 o’clock at night 1738.’ [Germantown Thomas. H. C.] ‘Elizabeth Dungan born Jany 22«l 10 o’clock at night in the year 1740. ‘Sarah Dungan, born 25th August, 3 P. M. 1743.’ [This one was married to our Grandfather Benjamin Corson, and was, of course, our Grandmother Corson. H. C.] — — — — — 286 Notes, Queries and Corrections. _ ‘ Thomas Dungan, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Dungan, was bom on Sunday 23 of March, at 3 P. M. 1794.’ [Now, though this was on the same leaf, I know he was not a brother to the others, but was a son of No. 4, the Germantown Thomas, and his wife Elizabeth, who was also a Dungan, being the daughter of Jeremiah Dungan; and she and her hus¬ band were both exactly the same relation to the old Revd Thomas Dun¬ gan * who came from Rhode Island in the year 1684. Their only child that grew to woman’s age was Mrs. Stuckert, mother of Mrs. Burnell H. C.] On another leaf of the old Bible used by Thomas Dungan of Ger¬ mantown and by his daughter, Mrs. Stuckert, is the following: ‘Thomas Dungan ’ [son of Joseph Dungan who was the son of Thomas Dungan who was the son of the Reverend Thomas Dungan] was born the 16th day of March 1738 and was married to Elizabeth Dungan ’ [daugh¬ ter of Jeremiah Dungan, son of Rev. Thomas Dungan] on Sunday the 19th day of May, 1793 Said Elizabeth was born on ye 27th day of De¬ cember, 1755.’ ‘Thomas, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Dungan, was bom Sunday, March 23rd, 1794, at 3 P. M. and died on Sunday, Eeby 2 2d, 1795. ’ ‘Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Dungan, was bora on Sunday 29th of Nov., 1795, at 3 o’clock, P M’ [she became the wife of George P. Stuckert and mother of Mrs. Burnell] ‘and died Thursday Morning, March 10th, 1846, in the 51st year of her age, at Germantown, and was buried in the Lutheran burying ground. ’ ‘Thomas, the second son of Thomas and Elizabeth, born Oct. 31, 1799, at 3 P .M. Died May 22nd, 1808, aged 8 yr., 6 mo., 28 days. ’ ‘Thomas Dungan Died 26 April 1805, aged 67 yrs., 1 mo., 11 days. ’ ‘Elizabeth Dungan, wife of Thomas, died August 28, 1821, aged 65 years, 8 mo., 25 days. ’ ‘George P. Stuckert, son of John and Susan Stuckert, was born Oct. 25, 1793, and was married to Elizabeth Dungan, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Dungan, March 16th, 1815, Thursday, and she died March 10th, 1845, in the 51st year of her age. Buried in Germantown Lutheran burying ground. ’ [She left only one daughter, Elizabeth, bom Nov. 10, 1829, who was married to Dr. William W. Burnell, Sept. 1st, 1853. They have had 7 children H.
