ANNIE OWEN AND JENNIE (KREISHER) SCHLOTTMAN THE PENNSYLVANIA WIVES OF GEORGE DEUEL OF NEW YORK Carol Deuel Sundeen, M.A.* G eorge Deuel was a resident of New York State who found both of his wives in Pennsylvania. In 1892 he married Annie Owen in Philadelphia. After her death in 1917, he again went to Pennsylvania–to visit relatives according to family legend–and came home with a second Pennsylvania wife-to-be, Jennie T. Schlottman, a widow with three children. Until her marriage, Annie lived in Upper Darby (Delaware County) and Philadelphia. Jennie, on the other hand, lived in Reading (Berks County) until she married George Deuel. Why did George Deuel choose to move to Philadelphia in 1892, and who were the relatives he was visiting in 1918? George’s motivation for first going to Pennsylvania still remains a mystery, but, as shown below, Annie Owen and Jennie Schlottman had more in common than was originally known, with connections to the Bowen family of Philadelphia; the Owen family of Burlington County (New Jersey) and Philadelphia; and the Thomas family of Philadelphia and Reading. GEORGE DEUEL The son of Sarah J. Wadsworth and Isaac Newton Deuel, George was born 9 April 1869 in Saratoga Springs, Saratoga County, New York. In 1870 the Deuel family was in Saratoga Springs; in 1880 George and his mother were living in Saratoga Springs with his maternal grandparents, George and Mary Wadsworth.1 Saratoga Springs directories 1887—1891 show George beginning his career as a photographer while living with his mother and grandparents. The Saratoga Springs directory lists George as “removed to Philadelphia, * 1108 Pratt Drive, Yardley, PA 19067. The author is a granddaughter of George and Annie Deuel. 1 Deuel-Owen marriage license #51892, Office of the Clerk of the Orphan’s Court, Division of the Court of Common Pleas, Philadelphia County; lists George’s birth place and date. Schlottman, a widow with three children. George and Jennie were married 28 November 1918 in Rochester. On their marriage license, Jennie gave her birth place as Reading, Pennsylvania, and named her parents as George Kreisher and Harriet Thomas.10 George Deuel died on Christmas Day 1948.11 Jennie died shortly thereafter, on 19 March 1949; her date of birth is given on her memorial card as 6 August 1874.12 George Deuel and both of his wives are buried at Riverside Cemetery in Rochester.13 2 Kirwin’s Saratoga Springs Directories, 1887—1892 (William. Review copy 12 June, 2008 212 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 45 JONES OWEN, GRANDFATHER OF ANNIE (OWEN) DEUEL On 11 May 1843 Jones Owen (shown below to be Annie’s paternal grandfather) married Sarah Bowen in Reading.14 As neither was from Reading, one has to wonder why they chose it as the location of their marriage. A possible answer emerged from the study of the ancestries of both Sarah Bowen and Jones Owen. Jones’ 1904 obituary stated that he was the youngest of twelve children, and that his parents were Samuel and Penelope Owen.15 A Bible record confirmed this, although eleven rather than twelve children are listed in the Bible.16 JOSEPH E. BOWEN, GREAT-GRANDFATHER OF ANNIE (OWEN) DEUEL Sarah (Bowen) Owen died 29 June 1906. Her death certificate named her parents as Joseph E. Bowen and Mary Sutton.17 Joseph E. Bowen was the son of Joseph and Jane (Edwards) Bowen. No marriage record has been found for Jane and Joseph, but a compilation of evidence indicates that Joseph E. Bowen was indeed their son, and that after Joseph Bowen died, Jane married Robert Thomas. Bowen-Owen Bible records Joseph E. Bowen’s birth date as 27 October 1791.18 Joseph Bowen was listed among the yellow fever deaths of 1793. 19 The administration for the estate of Joseph Bowen, 21 September 1793, lists Jane Bowen, widow, as administratrix. 20 Jane Bowen married Robert Thomas 5 January 1794 at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, Philadelphia.21 The will of Robert Thomas, written 16 July 1812, mentions wife Jane Thomas and stepson Joseph E. Bowen. 22 14 Jones Owen-Sarah Bowen marriage announcement, Philadelphia Inquirer, 16 May 1843. Jones Owen will, Delaware County Wills #4978, mentions his wife Sarah B. Owen and nine children including Samuel Owen. Samuel Owen probate (1921, Montgomery County Will Packet #35535 and Montgomery County Wills 53:554); the Inventory and Appraisal refers to the “Share of Jones Owen’s” estate. Parts of this will packet were in family records of the author, confirming that this Samuel Owen was the Samuel Owen named as father of Annie (Owen) Deuel in her death certificate. 15 Jones Owen obituary, Delaware County American, Media, 6 February 1904, page 4, column 5 (Delaware County Historical Society). 16 Samuel Owen-Penelope Wills Bible (page 225). 17 Sarah B. Owen death certificate, City of Philadelphia, 1906, #16694. The state death certificate (1906, #62515) erroneously lists her mother as “Margaret Sutton.” 18 Jones Owen-Sarah Bowen Bible (page 224). 19 Yellow Fever Deaths in Philadelphia 1793, 1797, 1798 in Collections of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, volume 299 (Philadelphia: handwritten manuscript, Ph 28A:1, Historical Society of Pennsylvania [HSP], 1914), 21 (FHL #381,286). 20 Joseph Bowen administration, Philadelphia Administrations I:311 (Philadelphia City Hall). 21 Bowen-Thomas marriage, “Pennsylvania Marriages Prior to 1810,” Pennsylvania Archives, 2nd series, 9(1896):495. 22 Robert Thomas will, Philadelphia County Wills 4:131. Review copy 12 June, 2008 2008 Pennsylvania Wives of George Deuel of New York 213 In 1817 Joseph E. Bowen and Jane Thomas were living at the same address, 241 North Front.23 A handwritten journal by Joseph Edwards mentions the marriage of Joseph Bowen to Jane Edwards about 1790, the death of Joseph Bowen in August of 1793 due to yellow fever, Joseph Bowen’s survivors as his widow and infant son Joseph, and Jane Bowen’s marriage to Robert Thomas.24 ISSACHAR THOMAS, HALF-BROTHER OF JOSEPH E. BOWEN In addition to naming his stepson Joseph E. Bowen, the 16 July 1812 will of Robert Thomas names daughter Letitia Thomas and minor children Hannah A., Barbara A., Jane, Robert, Richard S., Isachar, Ezekiel C., and Edward A. Thomas. Robert Thomas died 1 August 1812.25 His widow Jane married third 1 January 1819 at St. George’s Methodist Episcopal Church, Philadelphia, Robert Barlow.26 When she died in 1848, Jane Barlow left a will. Joseph E. Bowen was not mentioned in the will proper, but Isachar E. Thomas of Reading is, and Joseph testified in the Register’s Office on 5 December 1848 that he was “well acquainted with” Jane Barlow, “had seen her write her name,” and verified her signature on the will.27 Joseph E. Bowen’s relationship to Issachar E. Thomas might have been reason enough for Sarah Bowen and Jones Owen to have their wedding in Reading, but additional research regarding Issachar E. Thomas revealed another connection as well. Issachar E. Thomas first appeared in 1840, living in the South Ward of Reading.28 In 1850 Issachar, a coach maker, 43, was living in the Northwest Ward of Reading with Rebecca, 43, and ten children: Fanny, 15; Elizabeth, 12; Richard, 14; Anna, 10; Samuel, 9; Robert, 8; Harriet, 6; Jones, 5; Issachar, 4; and Rebecca, 3.29 Jennie Schlottman, second wife of George Deuel, had named her parents as George Kreisher and Harriet Thomas. This Harriet Thomas, born about 1844, would have been of the right age to be the mother of Jennie (Kreisher) (Schlottman) Deuel, who was born in 1874 and was from Reading. 23 Robinson’s Philadelphia Directory, 1817 (microfiche). 24 Joseph Edwards, “A Journal and History of the Edwards Family,” 99—101 (unpublished manuscript, Middletown Free Library, Delaware County, 1847—1852). 25 Robert Thomas burial record, Interments in the St. George’s Burial Ground, 1 August—8 August 1812 (FHL #1,862,364). 26 Barlow-Thomas marriage, St. George’s Methodist Episcopal Church (Philadelphia) Records, 1785—1856, part 1, Marriages 1816—1845 (HSP Ph 2M), page 28 (FHL #387,887). 27 Jane Barlow will, Philadelphia County Wills 21:257—58 (FHL #21,740). 28 Issacer E. Thomas died 9 May 1858,30 but Rebecca lived another thirty years, dying 31 October 1888.31 In 1860 and 1870, Harriet lived with Rebecca in Reading.32 In 1880, Rebecca Thomas, 72, born in New Jersey is found at 204 Franklin Street in Reading, with her “son-in-law” George Kreisher, “daughter” Harriet Kreisher, 38, and “granddaughter” Jennie Kreisher, 4,33 thus indicating that this indeed was the family of George Deuel’s second wife, Jennie. Additional confirmation of this conclusion is found in later census records: 1900, Reading. George and Harriet Kreisher were living at 204 Franklin Street in Reading 5th Ward.34 1900, Penn Township, Berks County. Adam Schlottman, with wife Jennie T., born in August 1874, and daughter Catherine, born in February 1898, were living with his parents.35 1910, Reading. Jennie Schlottman, 35, was a widow with three Schlottman children (Catherine, 12; George A., 6; and James, 4), living with her father George Kreisher.36 1920, Rochester. Jennie Deuel, 45, with her Schlottman children (Catherine 21; Alexander, 15; and James, 12) were living with George Deuel and his son, Irving.37 The story of George Deuel and his two wives might have ended here, except for a record found among the marriages of the Rev. Thomas J. Kitts, pastor in the Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, from 1818 to 1837. Included among his marriages was one 20 February 1834 for Issachar E. Thomas and Rebecca Owen, both of the Northern Liberties.38 Could Rebecca have been the sister of Jones Owen and daughter of Samuel and 30 Issachar E. Thomas obituary in Warren D. Review copy 12 June, 2008 2008 Pennsylvania Wives of George Deuel of New York 215 Penelope (Wills) Owen of Mount Holly, New Jersey? Although the 1850 and 1860 censuses state Rebecca was born in Pennsylvania, the 1870 and 1880 censuses state she was born in New Jersey; all show that the year was about 1807. This agrees nicely with the 21 November 1806 birth date for Rebecca in the Samuel Owen-Penelope Wills Bible (page 225). Her gravestone, next to Issachar’s at the Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading, gives her birth date as 22 November 1806. 39 CONNECTIONS Thus, we find a web of connections between the Bowen, Deuel, Owen, and Thomas families. Rebecca Owen, daughter of Samuel and Penelope Owen of Mount Holly, New Jersey married Issachar E. Thomas, half-brother of Joseph E. Bowen of Philadelphia. Jones Owen, son of Samuel and Penelope Owen, married Sarah Bowen, daughter of Joseph E. Bowen. Annie Owen and Jennie (Kreisher) Schlottman, the two wives of George Deuel, were both great-granddaughters of Samuel and Penelope (Wills) Owen of Mount Holly, New Jersey. Annie and Jennie shared another ancestor–Jane (Edwards) (Bowen) (Thomas) Barlow, mother of both Joseph E. Bowen and Issachar E. Thomas. Jane was Annie’s great-great-grandmother and Jennie’s great-grandmother. The mystery of why George Deuel chose Philadelphia in which to pursue his photography career remains, but now, at least, there is a possible explanation as to how he met his second wife. The family legend appears to be true–he probably was visiting relatives, the family of his late wife. At this point no other connection between the Deuel family of Saratoga Springs, New York, and Pennsylvania has been found. GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY–BOWEN40 1.
