Sm. 4to, Dr. Benson ’s fame as author and scholar will ever rest on his English Hymn, Its Development and Use, since it easily surpasses everything written on the subject. It is, however, on this last exquisite bit of book making, issued at Christmas in a limited edition, with a gem of pure English as preface, that his place as minister to the soul will remain un filled until there falls, to use his own words, * 1 the silence that wraps us round. ” CHURCHES IN DELAWARE DURING THE BEVOLUTION. Published under Supervision of the National Committee for the Preservation of Existing Records of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. Philadelphia, 1925. Pp. 202, por., facs. 2. So. The publication of a volume of patriotic war songs was first suggested by Mrs. James Starr of Philadelphia, Chairman of the National Record Committee, in 1917. To her energy, as Chairman, is doubtless due the format of this handsome piece of book-making. From the past, from the present, have come the Songs which grace its pages, together with authors ’ names familiar and unfamiliar. The division of the Songs into the respective war periods of the Nation is excellent. The dedication of the work to the memory of Mrs. Alexander J, Cas3att was fittingly approved in 1923. In the words of Mrs. Joseph R. Lamar, president of the National Society : “ This volume of war songs is dedi cated to the memory of a loved woman who was herself a * Happy Warrior ’ not only ready to give battle for what she believed in, but that rarer thing, a leader of others in maintaining the highest standards that we possess. ” Mrs . Cassatt of Philadelphia, the “ Happy Warrior, ” brave and true, born Lois Buchanan, niece of the fifteenth President of the United States, was appointed, in 1901, Treasurer of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, which office she held until her death in 1920. She was also the fifth President of the Pennsylvania Society of the Colonial Dames, 1901-1912. So many members of the Genealogical Society are interested in the American War Songs that no apology is offered for this somewhat ex - — — - tended notice. 1924 Copyright The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania PGM Vol IX Recent Boohs. 322 THE WARREN, LITTLE, LOTHROP, PARK, DIX, WHITMAN , FAIRCHILD, PLATT, WHEELER, LANE AND AVERY PEDIGREES OP SAMUEL PXJTNAM AVERY, 1847-1920 Compiled by Samuel Putnam Avery Published by the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, 1925 Pp six j 273 ; por ills 14 ; large So Printed on hand-made Japanese linen paper, with numerous illustra tions of artistic worth, this volume is an unusually fine example of genealogical book craft Literary excellence and thoroughness are also reflected in the biographical details of such founders of the American Commonwealth as come within the Bcope of the work It is well indexed . . - . . . . -- . . . CATALOGUE or AN EXHIBITION OF PORTRAITS BY JOHN NEAGLE. The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Philadelphia, 1925 Pp 158 ; por 98 ; plan 1; 8° Not so many years ago genealogy was chiefly concerned with names and dates Now, the question, what manner of men these our ancestors, is best answered by the shining canvass, the music score of a forgotten song, or, age-yellowed prose, or poem. To this change in genealogical outlook the Academy of the Fine Arts, by its recent portrait Catalogues of Sully, Peale and Neagle, has been no small contributor In the biographical notices of such Catalogues the genealogist may find not only a missing date, but the pure ego behind the date. . . . . WITH PHOTOGRAPHS AND BIOGRAPHIC SKETCHES OF UPWARD OF FIVE HUNDRED OF HIS FORMER PUPILS. By Charles J. Cohen, Philadelphia, 1926. Pp. 850. Facs. ills, Por. 8®. Mr. Cohen 's gracious tribute to his early alma mater has rarely been equaled. Many of those whose faces look out from the pages of his book have crossed the Great Divide, yet to those who remain, as to those who are to come, it will be an abiding joy It was a labor of love. When finished it was presented to all Dr. Faires * scholars who could still answer adsum to the call of their school fellow, the author. Mr. Cohen has put forth other outstanding books, but this touches the heart like Thackeray ’s picture of Grey Friar3 School. . 1924 Copyright The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania PGM Vol IX
