MARY (GREEN) HOOVER, PHYSICIAN, OF MISSOURI, KANSAS, IOWA, ILLINOIS, AND ARMSTRONG COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA Arlene V Jennings* A ccording to family tradition, Christian and Mary Hoover were from A3LPlum Creek in Pennsylvania.1 Consistent with the oral history, Mary and Christian appear in federal and state census records in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (1840, 1850);2 Henry County, Illinois (1865);ÿ Keokuk County, Iowa (1870);4 and Osage County, Kansas (1880, 1885, 1895).5 An eighty-eight-year-old widow in 1900, Mary appears as the mother-in-law in the household of Maurice Kelleher in Burlingame, Kan¬ sas.6 In news of the death of Maurice’s wife, Mary’s daughter, Hannah, we learn that by 1904 she was living in the home of her son, Samuel A. Hoo¬ ver, in Missouri.7 IAF Arlene V. Jennings, 306 State Street, Brooklyn, New York 11021, a great-greatgranddaughter of Mary Hoover, is retired from academic and corporate careers and engaged full time in genealogical research, writing, and volunteer activities. 1 Interview with Mildred (Kelleher) Jennings of Oberlin, Kansas, by the author, summer 1994. Mildred (Kelleher) Jennings, now deceased, was a great-granddaughter of Mary Hoover. 2 Christian Hoover Jr. household, 1840 US Census, Plum Creek Township, Arm¬ strong County, Pennsylvania, page 33 (NARA M704, roll 442). Christian and his family have not been found in the I860 census. According to his 1897 obituary (“Killed Himself,” The Burlingame Enter¬ prise, Burlingame, Kansas, 16 December 1897, 3:3 [Kansas State Historical Society (KSHS) microfilm B167]), he was in the area of Emporia, Kansas, in 1858; other mem¬ bers of his family are found there in census records for that time. 4 Chris Hoover household, 1870 US Census, Van Buren Township, Keokuk County, Iowa, page 10, #59/60 (NARA M593, roll 402). Christian outlived all but two, Hannah and Samuel. When Mary died, Samuel was the only surviving child. By a deed of sale dated 17 May 1854, Christian and Mary disposed of property in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.9 In 1856 the family com¬ menced a series of migrations from their home in Pennsylvania that took them first to Illinois,10 then in 1858 to the area of Emporia in Kansas Ter¬ ritory.11 This was just two years after Kansas opened for settlement, and three years before “bleeding Kansas” became a state. Life on the prairie frontier amidst the strife over whether Kansas would become a slave or a free state was punishing, especially for women. Although there were other family members living in the area,12 Mary and Christian stayed for only two years13 (though long enough for Christian to have joined John Brown’s campaign for a bit.)14 It would be twenty years before they returned.15 Two years after the move to Kansas they were living in Henry County, Illinois,16 and it was there that Christian, already fifty-two-yearsold, joined the Union forces as a private in Company C of the 11th Illinois Cavalry Volunteers. He enlisted on 30 November 1861 to serve three years, but was discharged for disability on 30 June 1862 following the siege of Corinth.17 Though he served less than a year, his experience was sufficient to earn the pension that would prove essential to Mary in her final years. 8 Christian Hoover’s obituary (note 3) states “Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hoover, only two of whom survive him, Mrs. M. Kelleher, of this place and Samuel Hoover of Springfield, Missouri.” Mary’s obituary states that the couple had eleven chil¬ dren (“Mrs. Christian Hoover Dead,” The Burlingame Enterprise, Burlingame, Kansas, 17 October 1907, page 2, column 5). 9 Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, Deeds 20:136-37. 10 « Mrs. Christian Hoover Dead” (note 8). 11 Christian Hoover’s obituary (note 3). 12 Michael Leffeler household, I860 US Census, Hartford Township, Madison County, Kansas, page 333 (NARA M653, roll 351). This was the home of Christian and Mary’s daughter Catherine. The census taker indicated that the three adjacent houses were vacant, a clue perhaps that one was previously the residence of Christian and Mary. 1 3 Christian Hoover’s obituary (note 3). 14 “Oldest G.A.R. He and his good wife are living together in a comfortable cottage in this city, and, surrounded by warm friends, are quietly enjoying the golden sunset of their lives with no regrets for the past and bright hopes for the future.” On the afternoon and evening of Tuesday, 15 August 1893, a sixtieth-wedding-anniversary celebration took place in their home.25 Only four years later the reality of their lives was that Mary was nearly blind and Christian put a pistol to his head to end a long period of suffering.26 Mary was 85 when her husband died on 15 December 1897; she applied for a widow’s pension three days later 27 After six months, on 2 1 June 1898, her application was rejected because Christian had committed suicide. Further documentation to plead her case showed she was “about total blind,” and so it was that members of the local G.A.R. post, rather than Mary, had cared for Christian in the illness that led to his taking his own life. Thus we understand why she signed documents in the widow’s 18 Maurice Kelleher Civil War discharge papers, Beaumont, Texas, 14 August 1865; copy in the files of the author. Her own pension of $8 a month began 29 June 1898, with the first check mailed 27 September 1898, nine months after she had made the application.30 On 23 January 1904 her daughter Hannah died.31 Hannah’s obituary states that Mary had made her home with Hannah for several years, but was by then living with her son S. A. Hoover of Missouri. Mary remained with Samuel, her only surviving child, until her own death 10 October 1907, in Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri.32 Her son accompanied her body to Burlingame for burial next to Christian.33 Census records show Christian and Mary did not live alone. One grand¬ son, George Leffler, apparently grew up with Christian and Mary.34 In addition to George, the 1870 census shows Mary and Christian’s adult son, James; their daughter Hannah with her husband and two children; and their daughter Barbara Edwards with three of her children in the home.35 Mary and Christian’s son, Sam, lived not far away.36 MARY HOOVER, PHYSICIAN Vital records for Osage County, Kansas, add another dimension. The birth registrations for two of Mary’s grandchildren list her as the attending physician.37 This prompted further examination of Osage County rec¬ ords, which reveal that Mary applied her skills beyond her family. Between 25 November 1885 and 18 September 1892, Osage County rec¬ ords show Mary Hoover as the “Physician Returning Certificate” for twenty-two births and two deaths,38 although the census consistently 28 Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, Deeds 20:136-37. 29 Certificate of Property Assessments dated 25 June 1898 and Articles of Agreement and Attorney’s Acceptance dated 18 December 1897 in Christian Hoover, Civil War pension file (note 17). 30 Document dated 29 April 1908; Christian Hoover, Civil War pension file (note 17). 31 “Mrs. Morris Kelleher” (note 7). 32 “Mrs. Christian Hoover Dead” (note 8). Both Mary and Christian appear in Kansas Physicians and Midwives Registered with the Kansas Board of Health, 1887-1900.40 How they came to their medical skills is not known. Working with and for another physician was the most common form of medical education for most of the nineteenth century in America.41 Mary and Christian’s knowledge may have come from observa¬ tion or apprenticeship with another physician, from studying medical books, from experimentation, or simply from experience. Kansas required certification after 1879, but older physicians were generally exempt from the requirement 42 Thus far, no records have been found prior to their residence in Kansas indicating their occupation as physi¬ cian. MARY (GREEN) HOOVER’S BIRTH FAMILY Clues to Mary’s family origins appear in documentation after the death of her husband Christian in 1897. His obituary and her application for a Civil War widow’s pension give her maiden name.43 From 1850 onwards the federal census shows that Mary was born in Pennsylvania about 1812. According to the 1880 and 1900 census, her parents were also born in Pennsylvania. Christian’s pension file contains two key affidavits. On 1 January 1898 Abraham Green of Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, stated: That he was well acquainted with Christian Hoover and Mary Green, Now Mary Hoover since long before they were married 1833 that he had lived in the same vicinity with them, and have heard occasionly from them, that, he was present at their Marriage and heard the Marriage Ceremony pro¬ nounced by David McCaslin a Justice of the peace (who is now deceased.) at Punxsutawney Cowanshannoc Township armstrong Co. P.a. on or about the 15th day of august 1833, and that they were never divorced or decreed from 39 Among the artifacts and papers preserved by Mary and Christian’s descendants and now in the collection of the author is a scrap of paper with the formula for “Grandpa Hoover’s liniment.” 40 Topeka Historical Library, Comprehensive Index to Kansas Physicians and Mid¬ wives Registered with the Kansas Board of Health 1887-1900 and Physicians in Kan¬ sas Listed in Dickman’s Kansas Medical Directory, 1881 (Topeka, Kansas: Topeka His¬ torical Library, 1975). The original lists are not available, but this published index shows Mary and Christian were listed in the first publication for 1887 and for 1892- 1898. 41 John T. Christian Hoover, Civil War pension file (note 17). 2007 Mary (Green) Hoover, Physician, of Armstrong County 11 each other, but had lived as Husband and wife all their lives and that neither of them, were previously married, before marriage to each other.44 A second affidavit presents testimony from Margaret Tucker. She too attended the wedding and knew the couple well; from her affidavit we learn the wedding took place at the home of Ezekiel Green.45 There is ambiguity about the location of the wedding and of Ezekiel’s home in the documents. Abraham’s deposition gives Cowanshannock,46 Armstrong County, with Punxsutawney crossed out. Mary’s application states that they were married in Punxsutawney. The affidavits suggest that Abraham Green, Ezekiel Green, Margaret Tucker, and Mary (Green) Hoover are related, but do not specify the rela¬ tionships. The marriage occurred in Ezekiel’s home, so it seems most likely he was her father. To establish Mary’s identity before her marriage to Christian Hoover, it is necessary to track Ezekiel and Abraham Green. No extant Armstrong County church or civil vital records have been found to offer further insights. In the census of 1830 there is an Ezekiel Green in Plum Creek. His household consisted of a boy under five, a boy five to ten; a man forty-five to fifty; a girl ten to fifteen; three young women fifteen to twenty; and a woman forty to fifty, a family structure that could easily include Abraham, Margaret, and Mary [Abraham Green is not found as head of household in the 1830 census of Armstrong County, nor is the surname Tucker]. Candidates for the family of Mary’s husband are nearby. Samuel Hoover and Christian Hoover are listed two and three households away, respectively. The children in the Samuel Hoover house¬ hold are all under sixteen, but the Christian Hoover household includes a young man age twenty to thirty— a likely candidate for the Christian who married Mary Green 47 On 18 January 1830, Ezekiel Green purchased the one hundred acres on which he lived, along the old purchase line in Wayne Township, Arm¬ strong County, adjoining Joseph Whitacre, Joseph Green, and Henry Slate.48 44 General affidavit, dated 1 January 1898, signed by Abraham Green, Cowanshannoc Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, in Christian Hoover, Civil War pension file (note 17). 45 General affidavit, dated 1 January 1898, signed by Margaret Tucker, Punxsu¬ tawney, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, in Christian Hoover, Civil War pension file (note 17). 46 Abraham was reporting from the perspective of 1898. However, Cowanshannock did not exist until 1848 when it was formed from parts of Kittanning, Plum Creek, and Wayne townships. It lies between Wayne and Plum Creek and to the east of Kittanning. Ezekiel’s property was in that part of Cowanshannock taken from Wayne. The borough of Punxsutawney, Abraham’s home at the time the affidavits were taken, was adjacent in Jefferson County. 47 Ezekiel Green, Samuel Hoover, Christian Hoover, and Philip Hoover households, 1830 US Census, Plum Creek Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, page 163 (NARA Ml 9, roll 145). The Philip Hoover household, twenty-six households away, includes only children under ten. 48 Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, Deeds 6:505-6. 12 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 45 In 1840 Ezikle Green appears in Wayne, the next township north from Plum Creek. His household consisted of only a boy between five and ten, a man forty to fifty, and a young woman twenty to thirty.49 There is no indication of the woman who was forty to fifty in the 1830 census. The boy of the 1830 census who might have been Abraham is no longer in Ezekiel’s home, but there is an Abraham Green, twenty to thirty, with a similarly aged female, listed two homes away. The girl who might have been Mary in the 1830 census is no longer present in Ezekiel’s listing. In Plum Creek in 1840 Christian Hoover Jr. and Sr. are listed next to each other. Christian Hoover, Jr., had three girls under five and one girl five to ten in his home in addition to one male thirty to forty and one female twenty to thirty.50 The 1850 census lists six more children.51 Abraham Green was in Cowanshannock in 1850.52 The 1850 census for Armstrong County does not list Ezekiel Green or Christian Hoover, Sr., nor is there any Tucker. The latest record found in Armstrong County regarding Ezekiel is the 1841 deed of sale. However in Young Township of adjacent Jefferson County, Ezekiel Green acquired thirty acres of land in 1848,53 and that is where he was listed in the 1850 census, sixty-six years old, a lumberman, and head of a household that included John (22) and Sarah (19) Green and three children.54 In I860 the same household appears in Bell Township (formed from Young in 1857).55 In 1848 Ezekiel Green of Young Township, Jefferson County, pur¬ chased land in Young Township.56 On 26 February 1853 Ezekiel Green of the County of Jefferson and township of Young and State of Pennsylvania yeoman wrote his will. 49 Ezikle Green household, 1840 US Census, Wayne Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, page 24 (NARA M704, roll 442). One person was engaged in agriculture. 50 Cristian Hoover, Jr., and Cristian Hoover, Sr., households, 1840 US Census, Plum Creek Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, page 33 (NARA M704, roll 442). 51 Crist Hoover, Jr., household, 1850 (note 2). Children listed are Barbara (16), Susan (15), Catherine (13), Hannah (11), Samuel (9), Elisabeth (6), Absalom (4), James (3), and Crist (1). 52 Abraham Green household, 1850 US Census, Cowanshannock Township, Arm¬ strong County, Pennsylvania, page 358, #91/92 (NARA M432, roll 749). 53 Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, Deeds 5:319 (FHL #923,842). 54 Ezekiel Green household, 1850 US Census, Young Township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, page 95, #287/295 (NARA M432, roll 786). The children are James C. (4), Rosana M. (2), and E. A. (female, 3/12). 55 John Green household, I860 US Census, Bell Township, Jefferson County, Penn¬ sylvania, pages 46-47, #661/661 (NARA M653, roll 1118). This census shows John Green (33), Sarah (30), James C. (13), Rosannah (12), Elizabeth A. (10), Henry (8) Sam¬ uel M. (6), John L. (4), George C. (2) and Ezekiel (76), now listed as a farmer. (Note: The given name appears to have been erased and written over; it is unclear if Elizabeth or Ezekiel was the final name. The census indicates the individual was a female, and based on this, the entry is indexed as Elizabeth at Ancestry.com. However a comparison to the John Green household in 1850 and the indication that the individual was a farmer sup port the identification as Ezekiel.) 56 Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, Deeds 5:319 (FHL #923,842). 2007 Mary (Green) Hoover, Physician, of Armstrong County 13 Ezekiel’s will does not name his wife, but it does name his children: Joseph, Samuel, Abraham, John, Sarah McAslin, Catharine Kerr, Mary Hoover, Bernina Harmon, and Peggy Tucker.57 Thus, the pension affida¬ vits from Abraham Green and Margaret Tucker were made for their sister. On 10 May 1865 the will came to probate. On 24 June 1868 John Green and Mary E. his wife of the Borough of Punxsutawney58 in the County of Jefferson in the State of Pennsylvania sold the same piece of land Ezekiel had acquired in 1848, on which he resided when he wrote his will, and which John had inherited under the terms of his father’s will.59 With positive identification of Mary’s father and her siblings, questions remain about her birthplace and about her mother. On 18 June 1841 Ezekiel Green of Wayne Township, Armstrong County and State of Penn¬ sylvania, and Esther Ann his wife sold the one hundred acres Ezekiel had purchased in Wayne Township in 1830.60 Yet in the 1840 census there is no age match in Ezekiel’s household for the woman aged forty to fifty in 1830.61 No trace of Esther Ann has been found after the 1841 deed. There is no likely wife for Ezekiel in the 1850 census when he was living with his son John (nor with their other children whom it has been possible to isolate in the census).62 No records have been found to indicate if the age of Ezekiel’s wife is off by three columns, if the mark for her was omitted, or if his wife had died and he married Esther Ann by 1841, but Ezekiel’s eldest son Joseph named a daughter born in 1848 Esther A., suggesting that Esther Ann was his mother.63 57 Will of Ezekiel Green, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, Wills 1:131 (FHL #927,531). 58 Punxsutawney is a borough in Bell and Young Townships. 59 Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, Deeds 21:415 (FHL #573,879). 60 Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, Deeds 12:530-32. 61 Ezikle Green household, 1840 US Census (note 49). 62 Charles Tucker household, 1850 US Census, Young Township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, page 87, #173/181 (NARA M432, roll 786). Robert McAslin household, 1850 US Census, Gaskill Township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, page 198, #352/360 (NARA M432, roll 786). This appears to be the home of Ezekiel’s daughter, Sarah. 63 Patron-submitted IGI entries state that Margaret Green, daughter of Ezekiel Green and Esther Ann Whitacre, was born 20 August 1820, in Lycoming, Pennsylvania, and died 1 November 1902, Punxsutawney, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, and was buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Jefferson County, and married Charles Tucker. Another patron-submitted IGI entry states that Ezekiel Green was born 23 March 1784, died 29 May 1865, buried in Ridgemont Cemetery, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, married Esther Ann Whitacre about 1806 in Armstrong County. No source has been located to date to support these assertions, although the Whitacre name appears in the vicinity of the Greens and on documents related to the Greens. The identification remains the subject of future research. 14 Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine Vol. 45 GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY 1. EZEKIEL1 GREEN was born 23 January 1784 (calculated from tomb¬ stone) in Pennsylvania (1850, I860 censuses).64 He died 29 March 1865 and was buried in Ridgemont Cemetery, Bell Township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania.65 He married, possibly as a second wife, ESTHER ANN ?ÿ who died between 1841 (deed) and 1850 (not on census). If she was his only wife, she was born about 1780-1790 (1830 census); if she was his second wife, she was born about 1810-1820 (1840 census). She died before 1850. The statistics for the Ezekiel Green household of Muncy Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, in 1810 and 1820 are compatible with the family as constructed below. Lycoming County is the likely birthplace of most or all of his children. — Children of Ezekiel1 Green.,66 GREEN, born about 1805 in Pennsylvania; living in 1853 (father’s i. will); married say 1828 MARGARET ?— 67 Children of Joseph2 Green and Margaret ? > horn in Pennsylvania: 1. Williams.3 Green, born about 1845. 7. Esther A.3 Green, born about 1848. ii. SARAH2 GREEN, born about 1809 in Pennsylvania; living in 1853 (father’s will); married say 1833 ROBERT MCCASLIN.68 Child of Sarah2 Green and Robert McCaslin: 1. David McCaslin, born about 1834. JOSEPH2 — —— 64 There was a cluster of Greens on the western side of Armstrong County, but they appear not to be related to this family. There is variance in the age given for Ezekiel in the censuses of 1830 (forty to fifty), 1840 (forty to fifty), 1850 (66) and I860 (76), with 1840 apparently in error. However, land, probate, and tombstone records in Jefferson County confirm that the records all refer to the same man. 65 Patricia Steele, Tombstone Hoppin’: Cemetery Inscriptions of fefferson County, Pennsylvania ([Evansville, Indiana]: Whipporwill, 1981), 197: d. 3/29/1865, Sly 2m 6d. His grave is in section C, row 8. In the 1850 and I860 censuses, Ezekiel Green’s birth¬ place is given as Pennsylvania. 66 These nine children are named in the will of Ezekiel Green (note 57). In 1810, the household had one boy and two girls under 10. In 1820, they were all between 10 and 16, and there were an additional boy and three girls under 10. Because of common surnames, three of the children named in the 1853 will could not be identified in 1850 or later censuses to determine their birth year and hence placement within the family with surety. Based on those with known birth years, the will appears to name the sons and daughters in birth order, and they have been arranged here accordingly, although this is not a perfect match for the censuses. 67 Joseph Green household, 1850 US Census (note 62). 68 Robert McCaslin household, 1850 US Census (note 62). 2007 Mary (Green ) Hoover, Physician, of Armstrong County 15 — 2 iii.
