LUPPOLDS FROM ENDINGEN, WÜRTTEMBERG, WHO EMIGRATED TO WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA David J. Sautter* P rimarily to escape poverty and overcrowding in the nineteenth century, over 312 men and women left Endingen, Württemberg, Germany, to come to the United States.1 The village was small–there were 740 inhabitants in 1820 and only 536 in 1900.2 Twenty-two with the surname Luppold emigrated, eighteen of whom have been identified as settling in Berks and Westmoreland counties, Pennsylvania; Palmyra, New York; Franklin County, Massachusetts; Warren County, Missouri; and Warren County, Indiana. As shown below, they frequently married persons from their own or a neighboring village, and they settled in America where other family members also settled. Some of the family members stayed in close touch with each other over the years. The following appeared in the 3 July 1890 Warren [Indiana] Republican: Mathias Luppold and lady, and their daughter, Mrs. E. L. Hottenstein, and Mrs. Keifer and daughter, Miss Mary, last Thursday went to Reading, Pennsylvania, called there by the death of a brother of Mrs. L. and Mrs. K., whose remains were interred last Monday. They will remain sometime after the funeral and visit relatives. Johann Georg Luppold had died in Reading 25 June 1890. He was buried in Gouglersville, Berks County, certainly only a few miles from where two of the children of Mathias and Anna (Kieffer) Luppold and five of the children of Thomas and Anna Maria (Luppold) Kieffer were born. The * 1304 James Court, Warrington, PA 18976; djsautter@aol.com. The author acknowledges with appreciation descendants of the Christian Luppold family who provided much of the documentation regarding that family; staff and members of Westmoreland County Historical Society, Greensburg, Pennsylvania; Montgomery County Historical Society, Red Oak, Iowa; Warren County Historical Society, Williamsport, Indiana; and Ms. Lisa McGrattan, Grand River, Ohio, who copied and indexed thousands of death notices and obituaries in the Williamsport, Indiana, newspapers. 1 The figure is a combining of names identified by Dieter Gaiser, historian of Endingen, in Ortsfamilienbuch Endingen im Zollernablkreis in Baden-Württemberg 1600— 1940 (seit 1971 Balingen-Endingen) (Balingen-Endingen: the author, 2002; copy at the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, 943 B4do ser. MATTHÄUS1 LUPPOLD was born 12 November 1825 in Endingen9 and died 9 February 1896 in Williamsport, Warren County, Indiana.10 He married apparently after August 1854 ANNA KIEFFER, who was born 13 April 1820 in Hesselwangen, Württemberg, a small village contiguous with and now part of the city of Balingen, daughter of Thomas Kiefer and Elisabetha Schneider,11 and died 1 February 1897 in Williamsport.12 Mathias Luppold, aged 25 born in Germany, is listed on the manifest of the Cotton Planter, which arrived in New York 15 April 1851 from Antwerp,13 but cannot be positively identified as the Endingen-born Luppold. Anna Kiefer, 33, and Joh. Luippold, 5, from Württemberg, arrived in New York 9 August 1854 from Le Havre on the Carolus Magnus.14 Both Matthäus and Anna are buried in Hillside Cemetery, Williamsport.15 Mathias1 Luppold and family were first identified in 1860 living in Morgantown, Cumru Township, Berks County, when he was listed as Nathan Loopole. The family immediately next in the census is that of Thomas and Anna Kieffer.16 Thomas Kieffer was a brother of Anna Luppold, and Anna Kieffer was a sister of Matthäus Luppold. The obituary for Mathias states that the family moved to Williamsport, Indiana, in 1861, which is consistent with the census records.17 Children of Matthäus1 and Anna (Kieffer) Luppold: i. JOHANNES/JOHN2 LUPPOLD, born 22 May 1849 in Hesselwangen;18 died 25 July 1914 in Williamsport;19 married about 1873, SARAH/SADIE/ESTER H. Thomas Kiefer was one of three sponsors at the baptism; it is not known whether he was the father of Anna or her brother. 19 Obituary, Warren Review [Williamsport, Indiana], 30 July 1914.
