EDITOR’S NOTES REMEMBERING NETTIE SEGRAVES L ong-time members of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania will be saddened to learn of the death in August of Antoinette “Nettie” Segraves, who was Executive Director of the Society from 1985 to 1992. Nettie served the genealogy community in many ways. She was a Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania board member from 1982 to 1985, a Councilor of the National Genealogical Society, and an instructor at the Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research (Samford). She was a dedicated member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving in many rolls, including chapter regent in both Pennsylvania and Alabama, honorary State Regent of Alabama, National Vice President General, and National Chairman of Lineage Research. She also was a member in and officer of the Society of Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, the Daughters of American Colonists, the Dames of the Court of Honor, the Daughters of Colonial Wars, the Daughters of Founders and Patriots, the Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, and USD 1812. Antoinette (Jones) Segraves was born in Langdale, Chambers County, Alabama. She attended Auburn University and the University of Florida. She died Monday, 18 August 2008 in Auburn, Alabama, age 67. A private graveside service was held August 20 at Town Creek Cemetery in Auburn, and a memorial service was held September 16 in Auburn. Memorials may be made to Alabama Children’s Fund at Kate Duncan Smith DAR School in Grant, Alabama; Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation; or Alabama Room, USD 1812. She is survived by her husband, William A. Segraves; a son and daughter-in-law; three grandsons; a stepson; and a brother and sister. Condolences may be sent to William A. Segraves at 1743 Lauren Lane, Auburn, AL 36830-7563. Our prayers and heartfelt sympathy are with the family of Mrs. Segraves. I remember Nettie as organized, knowledgeable, dignified–and fun. In the earliest years of my genealogical endeavors, I spent a Saturday listening to her give four lectures on Pennsylvania research at a seminar in Texas, greatly impressed by her presentation of a wealth of information. This was followed by a delightful evening of celebration when we learned that she had given up spending her birthday at home to share her knowledge with other researchers. We will miss her.
