EMIGRANTS FROM FROMMERN, WEILHEIM, AND WALDSTÄTTEN, WÜRTTEMBERG, 1750 AND 1754 contributed by Elizabeth B. Bunting * T he emigration from German villages was occasionally so large in number as to prompt separate mention in the church book. In this case, the minister seems to have first entered the departures in 1754 and then entered information about those departing in 1750.1 GERMAN [left page–the pages are reversed chronologically] Anno 1754 zogen neuer dingen in die Americanishe Lande folgende Personen fort: [margin] d. 5th April Freitag 1. Editor’s note: The 1754 record was found for Lubold [Luppoldt, Lebold, Lupold, Leopold] descendants by Frederich R. Wollmershäuser, Herrengasse 8—10, 89610 Oberdischingen, Germany, who did a translation. He did not, however, provide copies or a full citation. When the editor searched for it to complete the citation and include some missing wording, the 1750 record was found on the facing page. Transcription and translation were done by the editor and Annette Kunselman Burgert, FGSP, FASG. 1 Kirchenbuch, 1582—1932 Evangelische Kirche Frommern, manuscript in the Hauptstaatsarchiv, Stuttgart. Saltpeter manufacture was an important industry in parts of Germany, where a major part of the process was adding potassium chloride to a boiling solution of sodium nitrate. Evaporation and crystallization created sodium chloride (table salt) and potassium nitrate (saltpeter). After this death he came with his little son on land returned again before the [?] or [?]. Year 17513 3.) Ludwig Gastel, trader, with his wife and child, from Waldstätten. PENNSYLVANIA On 29 September 1750, 145 males arriving on the Osgood signed the oath. The following names appear together:4 Hans Ludwig Zimmerman, Hans Jerg Mekhel, Hans Ludwieg Stenel,5 Mattheis Miller, Hans Martin Müller, Christian Stotz [his connection, if any, to the villages is not known], Bernhart Wüst. The oath lists indicate that the Gürthners, Strobels, one of the Müller families, and the Zimmermans traveled on the Richard and Mary, which arrived in Philadelphia on 30 September 1754. The Krauses and Luppoldts were on the Peggy, which arrived on 16 October 1754.6 Thus, we see that a village-to-dock journey took five to six months. It appears that one of the Martin Müllers made his first trip in 1750 and his second trip in 1754 with his family, explaining why he is on the oath list in 1750, but the minister’s list in 1754 (he did not need to sign the oath twice). 47 had departed in a single month in 1754. In 1750, 16 persons are listed; three are from another village and the surviving Rüsts apparently returned, but this still does not total 55 as indicated by the minister. 3 A precise translation was not possible. This may say that he left his son with an uncle or relative. It also is not clear if the baby survived. 4 Ralph Beaver Strassburger and William John Hinke, Pennsylvania German Pioneers, 1727—1808 (Norristown: Pennsylvania German Society, 1934), 1:446, 2:518. 5 Strassburger and Hinke has Stein, but Burgert reads it as Stenel [Stengel]. 6 Strassburger and Hinke, Pennsylvania German Pioneers, 1:604—8, 636—41. Males 16 or above were noted; this included several Luppoldt sons. Final copy 31 December 2003
